covercash··on Show HN: The operating system I built as my high school project (2016)
Primarily greed but I think one of my group members also mentioned pride and gluttony. This was 18 years ago so details are fuzzy. I probably have the project on an old hard drive or CD-R somewhere...
covercash··on Show HN: The operating system I built as my high school project (2016)
For my high school senior theology project, we were instructed to select a modern news event, categorize it into one (or more) of the seven deadly sins, and then give a class presentation. I miraculously convinced my group to choose the Microsoft antitrust case since I had just read the Wired cover story on it. Throughout the year, I sat in the back of the room and had a fake bible cover over my Flash 5 Bible and was reading about actionscript instead of paying attention to a topic I had no interest in. For the project, I made a fully interactive Windows 2000 desktop and functioning start menu that would launch “programs” that were the visual components of the presentation. We had the teacher move class to the computer lab where I loaded the flash executable onto each computer so the students could play with it while we gave the oral presentation. It was pretty awesome and we ended up with the only A in the entire grade!
covercash··on $190M missing after crypto exchange Quadriga CEO dies
Dying from complications related to Crohn’s is not out of the question, especially in places that don’t always have the best health care.
covercash··on Photo Wake-Up: 3D Character Animation from a Single Photo
I imagine the porn industry will have a creative implementation of this technology as well...
covercash··on Inside the Philly DA’s side hustle –selling seized homes to speculators and cops
This was discussed earlier today on the r/Philadelphia subreddit and this was the top comment: https://reddit.com/r/philadelphia/comments/a4xseb/_/ebigt2b/...
covercash··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
Starseige:Tribes - the slightly broken physics in that first of the franchise really made for a fast paced and fun game. Update the models and textures and it could be a great modern day esports game to play and spectate.
covercash··on Samsung used my DSLR photo to fake their phone’s “portrait mode”
I keep hoping someone will kickstart a display company that sells just really amazing displays and none of the “smart” garbage. I read that some manufacturers even serve up ads in their latest smart UIs. That’s infuriating!
covercash··on How Our Relationship Survived When My Partner Got Sick
I mod r/CrohnsDisease and try to make sure every text post gets at least one thoughtful reply. We’re here for anyone with IBD/Crohn’s/Colitis as well as friends & family of those who have it (since it can be just as difficult for them.)

covercash··on US homeless fundraiser: GoFundMe campaign 'based on a lie'
I think part of it has to do with how gofundme started... early on, they made it look and feel like people were essentially donating to a charity. They hid their fees deep in the FAQ and allowed the general population to assume that donations on gofundme were the equivalent of donating to something like the Make A Wish Foundation. It was a toxic company from the very start.
covercash··on US homeless fundraiser: GoFundMe campaign 'based on a lie'
We don’t allow gofundme/crowdfunding links on r/CrohnsDisease because we’ve had scammers just like that in the past and we don’t have the resources to investigate each campaign. It sucks because some of our users really could use the assistance.
covercash··on Amazon Is Kicking All Unauthorized Apple Refurbishers Off Amazon Marketplace
I’ve replaced all of my family’s iOS chargers and cables with Anker — far more durable than Apple’s!

I still mostly stick with Apple products when it comes to notebook power, especially for the 15” MBP.

covercash··on ChuChu TV is responsible for widely-viewed toddler content on YouTube
Because I don’t have the physical, mental, or emotional capacity to take on something of that scope. A good day for me is one where I only have to shit 10 times instead of 20 - that sort of thing kills a lot of hopes and dreams.
covercash··on ChuChu TV is responsible for widely-viewed toddler content on YouTube
Someone wrote Popcorn Time under those same conditions...
covercash··on ChuChu TV is responsible for widely-viewed toddler content on YouTube
Why isn’t there a Popcorn Time equivalent of children’s programming? Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street, Avatar:TLA and similar vetted content only. And strong parental controls if parents want to further limit the content.

Kernel Time?

covercash··on Tesla Accounting Chief, HR Head Resign on the Same Day; Stock Plunges
Maybe that’s his backup plan if it doesn’t work out... use a BoringCo drill to “accidentally” trigger an earthquake, collect insurance money, funnel it all into SpaceX and launch himself to Mars.
covercash··on DuckDuckGo Raises $10M
Or maybe google will sell them duck.com?
covercash··on Jack Dorsey says in an interview he's rethinking the core of how Twitter works
Is he still running Square too? Maybe he needs to go all in on one and quit doing this back and forth dance.
covercash··on FCC admits it was never actually hacked
A real-life consequence for abhorrent behavior? I’m all for that. Maybe not quite that extreme, but I think public shaming of these people and their friends/family is acceptable. They don’t seem to respond to anything else these days.
covercash··on Mr. Rogers Had a Simple Set of Rules for Talking to Children
Part 4 of the interview is my favorite, but the entire thing is wonderful!
covercash··on Mr. Rogers Had a Simple Set of Rules for Talking to Children
I have a playlist of Fred Rogers videos including an AMAZING 4.5 hour interview that covers everything you could ever want to know about him: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1eNhoNMQfyH0OCAwcixA...
covercash··on Tech Startup Slice Helps Local Pizzerias Get Online
I hate Slice. They basically came in and registered similar domains to existing pizza shops but because they are better at SEO than the mom & pop places, their results out rank the real sites.

They even went in and updated unclaimed listings on yelp, google, Foursquare, etc. and put their site.

That would be fine if the pizza shops were on board with this. But none of the shops I order from had any clue their orders were being hijacked. Oh, and Slice charges more than if you ordered directly from the shop.

covercash··on TWiT is suing Twitter, alleging breach of contract and copyright infringement
Well clearly Twitter should just acquire TWiT and turn the platform into their own talking head political commentary network.
covercash··on People Walked Differently in Medieval Times
Vivo Barefoot make an insulated hiking boot that I wear in the snow and my feet stay toasty!

I have 7 pairs + sandals from them for various occasions. I have no affiliation, I just really like their shoes.

covercash··on People Walked Differently in Medieval Times
I’m a fan of Vivo Barefoot minimalist shoes. The quality has significantly improved over the years. They’re available from their website and Zappos will usually have some as well.
covercash··on IKEA Effect
I’d say there’s a bit of this “finders feeling” when hunting for limited release electronics/sneakers on launch day (if they’re for you and not to $flip). Not quite so much anymore with all of the pre-order options available these days.
covercash··on Opinion: How Apple could have prevented the iPhone-slowdown controversy
They are replaceable... for $79. Which is probably close to what they would have charged for additional batteries if they had gone with a hot swap design.

Actually, I bet they’d sell a $79 normal and $129 extended ‘pro’ version.

covercash··on John Lasseter taking a leave of absence amid reports of inappropriate behavior
Send that booking agent to Hot Ones and get those guests in front of Sean Evans. He digs deep and does wonderful interviews.
covercash··on Bomb kills journalist who exposed Malta's ties to tax havens
This was an assassination, yet not a single article about this contain that word.
covercash··on Giving you more characters
Is it a joke?
covercash··on The End of ProTube 2
Yeah, I'm using it on iOS 11 and it works great (although I don't love the new native video UI Apple is going with) - my concern is that YT will be dicks and kill access through the API. I sure hope not.
