cosmotic··on All I wanted was a custom domain email
The problem with self hosting is getting through google, microsoft, etc spam filters.
cosmotic··on Figma restricts MCP access to whitelisted clients, excluding Pi
Allow-listed would be a more accurate and more inclusive term.
cosmotic··on Fuck Android Developer Verification Program
That's illegal. No private right of action though. Gotta go through your ISP or FTC, assuming you're in the USA.
cosmotic··on 10 Tells of a Slop UI
An active student means you're enrolled. It has implications, student discounts for example.
cosmotic··on Real-time feedback: My closing move in every interview
Be the change you want to see in this world.
cosmotic··on A brief history of Windows scroll bar shortcuts
What do you mean? In my experience and according to the article, it scrolls pages at a time when you left click on the gutter.
cosmotic··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
This sounds similar to Microsoft and the start menu. A few years ago I went to extreme lengths to disable cortana (powershell guid uninstall). This invisibly and inexplicably disabled updates to the start menu search feature. The index remained the feature worked, it just never got updated again. No amount of manually reindexing the disk helped. Reinstalling cortana got it working.
cosmotic··on Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one
I really like Finder. It's consistent, reliable, accessible, and predictable. There are easy ways to see the real file system and windows certainly doesn't do any better in this regard (see: libraries and other namespaces).
cosmotic··on The "File" menu isn't about files
Nearly every example in the original post just gives more specific names to the type of files the application works on, including applications that are extremely file-centric like QuickTime Player and Word. One of the best counter examples in the OP is Claude, but that's only because, for whatever reason, Claude doesn't have an export, import, or attach option, probably because it's just an Electron app.
cosmotic··on The "File" menu isn't about files
Check the HIG. It says to use 'File'. I'm sure the goal here is consistency. It's a Human Computer Interaction (HCI) fundamental principle.

cosmotic··on Yes/No/Cancel causes Aspirin sales to soar (2007)
This is largely the consequence of the Windows API having a built in option to use these buttons, without having an option for custom text. It would be a lot more work to build a custom window with custom buttons than just callong this API.

cosmotic··on Grindr CEO Says AI Is Doing the Work of 200 Engineers
Especially considering the quality of the app and how long bugs last.
cosmotic··on Quake – 30th Anniversary Update
This was very common at the time. I suspect there was a technical reason, maybe freeing up the CPU and memory from dealing with music and offloading that to the CDROM drive.
cosmotic··on Waymo CEO explains why Tesla’s camera-only self-driving falls short
I thought the pitch for just-cameras was that the hardware was cheaper and that it's what humans are "using", evidence that it should be sufficient. Just-cameras was to take more engineering to build upnfront but pay off in lower costs in the end. That argument disagrees with the graph that's presented.
cosmotic··on Most tech revolutions made work worse for employees
Yet people still have to work the same number of hours each day - they are performing the same amount of labor, just in a different form.
cosmotic··on Why has the display control panel pointer truncation bug gone unfixed for long?
Did they not look up the PC manufacturer or model number to verify this hypothesis?
cosmotic··on Apple's hostile App Store rating system
There are many people in the HN comments supporting the decision to rate apps with one star when said apps solicit ratings. You posted a screenshot of another person agreeing with this perspective, and I'm yet another.
cosmotic··on Apple's hostile App Store rating system
Baseless? You posted all the evidence people need in the form of a screenshot and acknowledgement. People hate the nagging and support the only recourse they have to stop it.
cosmotic··on Show HN: Claude-thermos keeps your Claude session warm for you
How will this not lead to tragedy of the commons?
cosmotic··on Geekbench 7
How does this handle hardware encode/decode of media? Tje announcement says it encodestdecodes AV1 but doesnt indicate if it leverages hardware codecs.
cosmotic··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
If you're going to blame someone here, it should probably be Microsoft. They are the ones that built the system LG is utilizing.
cosmotic··on Tech CEOs are breaking the law
This site is asking me to paste code into powershell to view the article. This post should be taken down.
cosmotic··on RFC 10008: The new HTTP Query Method
Would those same proxies work with the new method?
cosmotic··on RFC 10008: The new HTTP Query Method
Why not just define the semantics of a GET request body?
cosmotic··on Sweet Jeebus, macOS 27 Golden Gate Removes the Dumb Icons from Menu Items
I think Liquid Glass is inherently bad. Universaly accepted truths about UIs that Liquid Glass violates:

* Consistent look across instances

* Consistent look as surrounding content changes

* Contrast is meaningful

* Interactsble elements are not stacked on the z axis

* Animation conveys meaning

You can see evidence that even Apple understands this by the presence of the options to disable many aspects of Liquid Glass living in the accessibility options.

cosmotic··on Show HN: Textile – A desktop app for weaving together bits of text
Looks a lot like CyberChef which is web based. https://cyberchef.org/
cosmotic··on Modern Blu-ray drives can now rip GameCube, Wii, and Xbox 360 games to PC
My understanding is that LibreDrive leverages a bug in the drives firmware such that decryption keys for Blu-ray was accessible. This OmniDrive seems to have little to do with decryption.
cosmotic··on Fisker went bankrupt and owners built an open source car company from the ashes
Oh, not the owners of the company, the owners of the cars the company made.
cosmotic··on Feedr v0.8.0 – a TUI RSS reader, now read the full article from your terminal
Terminal seems like an odd choice for a platform to read on, considering the fixed-width characters.
cosmotic··on Zero-native – Build native desktop apps with web UI
Using the system webview theoretically saves memory. Though it's still not great.
