cosmiccatnap··on GitHub blocked me and all my libraries
I have only ever gotten to githubs via goggle...
cosmiccatnap··on Dow falls 2,200 points, trading halted, as rate cut fails to calm markets
Maybe but that assumed that what your haulting isn't just an algorithm set by someone...which is almost always is. The algorithm will just continue after the 15m to do what it was doing previously.

What if I told you those are the facts...
cosmiccatnap··on Hard Truths for New Software Developers
This sounds like a dad trying to tell his kid how hard it was for them growing up. None of these bullets are a promise and most of them are pretty condisending and seems to just be a rant about all the things that didn't work out for him but that feels like it's because he was expecting to have his hand held alot more which is something I've never assumed.

cosmiccatnap··on Open Source Initiative bans co-founder, Eric S Raymond
If you said that at work you would be fired, because nobody can have a civilized conversation with you and no progress can be made. Nobody is stopping him from expressing himself in his personal life but if you are going to bring your crap to work expect there to be consequences.
cosmiccatnap··on New flaw in Intel chips lets attackers slip their own data into secure enclave
Its not a bias it's just true. Intel has chips that are objectively underperformannt and less secure based on everything we know currently. There are no good reasons anyone should pick an Intel chip for their desktop system for the foreseeable future.
cosmiccatnap··on New flaw in Intel chips lets attackers slip their own data into secure enclave
You are correct. No AMD vulnerability is in the same universe as the Intel vulnerabilities from this year alone. Good luck on your new build
cosmiccatnap··on New AMD side channel attacks discovered, impacts Zen architecture
I'm here, I just think that if you are comparing this to a real vulnerability like specter or meltdown you are making a mount Fuji out of an ant hill. It leaks some metadata, not exactly an afternoon romp through your memory like the last few Intel bugs they've found this year.
cosmiccatnap··on Take a Way: Exploring the Security Implications of AMD’s Cache Way Predictors [pdf]
Meh, seems like this would be a wet dream if it's the only issue found on an Intel chip these days. Pretty easy exploit but pretty limited exposure from doing so.
cosmiccatnap··on Apt 2.0
I know they are kind of just wrapping aptitude but it's frustrating I can't just wildcard for things. It's a package manager not a development framework, why would regex and wildcard not be enough for anyone?
cosmiccatnap··on Hydrogen made using rust
This is a very confusing title for this site. I thought someone had reimplemented the drum machine hydrogen in rust
cosmiccatnap··on Not being an asshole will make you more money
Every manager I've ever had I've ask for a raise and everyone of them have given me the option to show up Monday or find a new job. This is fanciful thinking in a priviledged industry and doesn't represent most employment relationships.
cosmiccatnap··on We use Kubernetes and spot instances to reduce EC2 billing up to 80%
This just isn't true, in fact quite the opposite. If you just have a website you are working on aws is complex and expensive. When you need to handle it at scale then AWS is far better than other clouds and an order of magnitude cheaper than rolling your own racks.
cosmiccatnap··on FCC forced by court to ask the public again for feedback on net neutrality
Companies. He's talking about companies, it's not that obtuse.
cosmiccatnap··on Mac OS Catalina: more trouble than it’s worth (Part 2)
I get that, and everyone in this thread knows that, but the issue is that alot of devices come with it and it is branded as "stable" Windows and Linux have a better excuse they have to support thousands upon thousands of devices and configurations but for apple to have this many issues with the hand full of pre built systems they have, well, it should be perfectly understandable to ask why a company with this much time and money would release something in this state especially when they had a beta. For most of us it's not a big deal but plenty of people have to start writing their app and testing on this and for them it's pretty confusing and you have to ask yourself how it got this way when there shouldn't have been any reason for it to.
cosmiccatnap··on Skepticism after Windows 10 search failure

cosmiccatnap··on The Failure of the iPad
This is what I've found to be the most true. For years people talked about the Mac devices being so much better for development and creativity but after dealing with one for a year all I can say is that it's got a Unix terminal which is better than windows but falls short compared to a Linux system. Android is the same, having tried the iPad and the iPhone because it was faster and had a better interface I soon realized it was just a toy painted to be a device for adults and no real speed improvement was noticed for anything but mobile games which I don't play anyway, I switched back to a note and threw Manjaro on a laptop and I've been more productive with that combo than any I've tried...

I can't even imagine what you would or could use an iPad for that a thin laptop like the xps wouldn't run circles around even in terms of portability. It just seems to me like these people bought a very expensive 2 year old computer and need to justify it to themselves and others.

cosmiccatnap··on Rocket League left behind on macOS and Linux due to DirectX 11 shift
It's nice that you have embedded experience but as long as you don't write in directX there is no difference between game development among these platforms except for the massive black box of strange stuff that is the windows API. I would take the Linux API any day over that for basic I/O and most drivers are baked in. There is a reason all consoles historically besides xbox are made in top of a stripped Linux kernel.
cosmiccatnap··on Rocket League left behind on macOS and Linux due to DirectX 11 shift
It would require them to write it in vulkan which would improve performance across the board on both platforms...so really I think we are asking them to do a job that will cost them more money than they expected for a product they can maintain longer for less effort. You can have both but you have to know what you are doing, epic is just tending a garden that someone else made and clearly doesn't have that level of forsight.
cosmiccatnap··on Microsoft urged: Open-source Windows 7 to 'undo past wrongs'
They won't do this because then you would see how much of this codebase is just the same as it ever was with a new GUI. Reminds me of that board meeting at the beginning of Tron legacy. This is accountability and forced innovation, two things Microsoft avoids at all costs.
cosmiccatnap··on CacheOut: Leaking Data on Intel CPUs via Cache Evictions
Not sure you've been keeping up but in 2020 most major server makers have switched or at least offer an epyc varient because the price/performance is better even without Intel's constant security woes
cosmiccatnap··on CacheOut: Leaking Data on Intel CPUs via Cache Evictions
That's putting alot of faith in the OS and it's ability to sandbox correctly.
cosmiccatnap··on I won’t buy an iPad: ten years later
I've seen alot of discontent for his writing style but only a few posts that actually attempt to rebut the fair criticisms that you are being sold a device you don't control. It's an interesting hypocracy from a site that hangs on the every word of librem but condones apple in the same day...
cosmiccatnap··on I won’t buy an iPad: ten years later
Interesting how an attack of his writing style invalidates his criticisms...
cosmiccatnap··on Microsoft to force Chrome default search to Bing via Office365 ProPlus installer
Have you ever tried to 'bing' a python error you've ran into? This is specifically bad because it's a business product meaning that trying to get work done will only get harder.
cosmiccatnap··on Apple dropped plan for encrypting backups after FBI complained
Sounds like another reason iOS is no longer the choice for security...
cosmiccatnap··on FreeBSD is an amazing operating system
I hear this all the time but see no proof.

Why are jails better and if so why did they lose to containers?

Why is OSS better when alsa could probably interface with one of those talking fish on the wall if you ask it nicely.

Why is ZFS any better than the Linux implementation if freeBSD is backporting the Linux version now.

Why is ifconfig better than network manager when there are no drivers for half the chipsets anyway.

Linux is practical, and I think hate for it comes from BSD users frustrated that they dont want to learn how another kernel works but I share none of the problems BSD users often claim. Your hangup is on a distro or a filesystem but never the actual Linux kernel which it seems to me nobody bothers to learn before trashing anyway.

cosmiccatnap··on FreeBSD is an amazing operating system
For an OS that doesn't get any love it sure does show up here bi-weekly and is used as the backbone of all the biggest video streaming platforms...

I think there is this idea that Linux can't or won't achieve what BSD has but after being a sysadmin for years in Linux systems running behind pfSense I can say that this is all a rose colored vision of a time gone by from people who had the misfortune to learn Unix before linux. They are both full of silly paradigms and pitfalls, inconsistency and sometimes even order but in equal parts if you actually understand them and how they are built. The only difference I see at 20 years at it is one of them has hardware, software, and documentation for any contingency even if it's lackluster and the other is freeBSD. I admire the nostalgia but its gotten old...I would go so far as to say for pure practicality that I can do anything on Linux I can do on BSD but Im not nieve enough to claim the opposite.
