cosmiccatnap··on Framework Laptop Mainboard
Big fan, few small things.

AMD models, and maybe even arm64 mainboards would be lit.

16 inch variant, black and white options.

Oh, and if possible, coreboot please.

Keep up the good work, you have my money

cosmiccatnap··on Jack Dorsey’s $2.9M NFT dropped 99% in value
Well, yea, it was a pump & dump. Most NFTs are.
cosmiccatnap··on A New Golden Age for Computer Architecture (2020) [video]
The innovation we are all waiting on is an SSD which has the speed and performance of RAM such that they become one in the same. With some chip yields as low as 30% we are approaching the limit of shrinking transistors and the next 10 years of innovation will have to be architectural. The idea of photon computers is also a direction we will see more research into and might be about to get a 1mhz light processor by 2030
cosmiccatnap··on M1 Thunderbolt ports don’t fully support USB 3.1 Gen 2
The apple apologists are in full swing in this comment section. $2000 laptops should do exactly what they claim, full stop.
cosmiccatnap··on My living room still has 3 TVs but I have regrets
...think I'm fine just reading a book or using a tablet
cosmiccatnap··on The Joel test for remote work
This is what a union is for. People who think companies can't afford this are 1. Unaware of how much they skim at the top 2. Unaware of how many companies exist that don't deserve to.
cosmiccatnap··on SUSE Linux Enterprise Opens Its Development Model to the Public
Being a long term arch user this is very funny to me.

When open source developers make a rolling release it's a niche techie fetish but when CentOS does it suddenly it's "enterprise" it's wild what companies will pass off as "production ready" to managers.

cosmiccatnap··on Solaris 11.4 free for non-production personal use
That's cool for a bit of nostalgia but sad because...in a world with Linux and freeBSD I can't understand why anyone would do this for any real reason. If they had done this 10 years ago people would be thrilled, but doing it in 2022...well it's kind of like saying DOS 6.22 is free for personal use. A not so subtle reminder that at oracle for every engineer or developer there are two lawyers or managers waiting in the wings.
cosmiccatnap··on Tails 5.0~beta1: Call for testing
This stuff is really cool but in a world with IME it's sadly, moot. What good does a secure OS do you if the hardware has a fully embedded OS tied to both your keyboard and Ethernet adapter such that it can transparently send and receive anything you are doing?
cosmiccatnap··on Video games are kinda boring
You sure do post your junk on here a lot...
cosmiccatnap··on Job hunting while day-jobbing (2021)
An hour a week!? The interviews I do are a gauntlet of everything under the sun across the entire spectrum of CS. You are basically cramming for your exit exams all over again AND you have to get soft skills in AND explain your job experience. It's frankly overkill for the majority of jobs
cosmiccatnap··on RaidForums gets raided, alleged admin arrested
Hey you can't collect an sell American information, that's OUR job!
cosmiccatnap··on Eden
So, instead of breaking their repo up so git is more performance, they forked mercurial instead?

Madness

cosmiccatnap··on Is my advice too mercenary?
The fact that there was an outcry big enough to merit this is sad. HN and sites like it are saturated with people trying to turn the tides of a world with better worker protections. Some of it is because people making startups genuinely think they will "do better than those guys" which is never true at scale. The reason that the job market is such a mess in the US is that it is dehumanizing from beginning to end, from interview to exit and at both of those stages there isn't really any benefit to trying to speak your mind. Companies will do whatever makes them profit. If a car kills X people it has to outweigh Y in legal costs before a Z amount will be spent on a recall. You can be friendly and enjoy the comrodery of your fellow employees but at the end of the day make no mistake they are not invested in you and will replace you the moment you are dead or inefficient to their KPIs. Take care of yourself, take care of your family and friends but do not make the mistake of confusing those with your bosses or managers because I promise they won't get those mixed up when it comes your well being.

Exit interviews are a trap...because everything you say and do at your company has little landmines built into it because they are constantly trying to use humans like cogs in a clock and when you wear out you are no longer helpful to the clock maker or the people who use the clock everyday...then you get removed from the clock and replaced quickly.

cosmiccatnap··on Node.js packages don't deserve trust
Sort of a cake and eat it too mentality if you ask me. If you're not willing to build your own JS glue then you should at least take time to audit the glue you are pulling in from some thankless developer who probably started this as a hobby project in college and now it is the backbone of 10 fortune 500 frontends.

I'm sorry that they can then do whatever the hell they want with that package but this ecosystem exists because companies want free stuff but don't want to provide back into it.

cosmiccatnap··on Identifying fraudulent PPP loans through network analysis
I would imagine half of them were but that's not the problem. The problem is that plenty of people who took that money then to mitigate risk will use it now to lawyer up against these claims and make no mistake they won.
cosmiccatnap··on Middle managers fear they've become irrelevant with work from home
It's wild how often people defend middle management.
cosmiccatnap··on NPM package event-source-polyfill compromised by political activists
That's a funny way to say "leveraged by it's authors for their ends"

Maybe something's are more important than a js package?

cosmiccatnap··on Using Windows after 15 years on Linux
At least they are honest about them unlike windows where we won't find NT kernel vulnerabilities for a decade sometimes and by then it's been widely exploited.
cosmiccatnap··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
You will notice this thread is being pushed off the front page despite having an absurd amount of comments...
cosmiccatnap··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
I find it interesting how people define a lie. It's the responsibilities of these people to be on the same page and so if they are not lying they are rife with poor internal practices which gives me about the same impression of them as if they had been lying.
cosmiccatnap··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
Anyone else smell astroturf?
cosmiccatnap··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
This is very much, not, situational. Going through the process now and has happened every time but 2 of the 10 or so I'm looking at.
cosmiccatnap··on From Belonging to Burnout, Five Years at Airbnb
"the founders announced that they had no choice but to lay off all 500ish contractors and around 1,900 employees. The CEO cried on a broadcast that we needed to say goodbye to some of our Airfam and called on us to support each other through this difficult time. “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers played at the end of the broadcast"

This stuff is sickening and toxic.

cosmiccatnap··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
I feel like an outcast whenever someone tries to reinvent something that has worked fine for ages now. I would happy use gnome-terminal or urxvt or windows terminal or whatever and it basically works the same for me. Can't I set a font and maybe color scheme? Then who cares just grab iTerm2 and get work done.
cosmiccatnap··on I decided that I must live my life on my terms
I think many frequent users of HN should really consider this more. I'm glad you are enjoying Vue but it's also your kids 3rd birthday and your dad's 68th and neither of those things hit you as hard as transpiling some js? Priorities are lost in the hustle culture that silicon valley built and you are punished for not doing it constantly. It's toxic and we need to do better, there are more important things than a computer.
cosmiccatnap··on Amazon worker chat app to ban words such as “union”, “pay raise”, “slave labor”
I must get aws job offers from recruiters every couple of months and they just can't seem to understand why I would turn them down.
cosmiccatnap··on Infrastructure as Code Should Feel
I feel like infrastructure as code is one of those things that highlights your companies poor practices more than it does highlight the failures in say terraform or cloudformation.

A company that is willing to work at the code level to automate their systems will find tools like terraform and cloud formation useful, companies that have a LAMP stack from 2010 and no way to test their infrastructure changes in a safe way will not...

cosmiccatnap··on What Is Management?
Management is what happens when you need an excuse for why nothing happens.
cosmiccatnap··on A project with a single 11,000-line code file
I see people do this all the time with terraform and it's madness.
