corpdronejuly··on I accidentally compromised my hot wallet
Which is why we never hear these horror stories about phishing attacks trying to get people to send things to the wrong account.

The fact is that in many, perhaps most cases of theft the Government isn't able to do much more than punish someone they think did the crime, maybe they can recover the assets, just as often those assets are evidence and you don't get them back for years.

corpdronejuly··on Magpie Driven Development (MDD)
What would you consider to be "necessary GraphQL"
corpdronejuly··on Why Japan Looks the Way It Does: Zoning [video]
Given the interminable arguments they have about "who counts as white" and their racial anxieties I'm sure they're more aware, on average, of the differences between a Texan, and a Californian, or a Scottsman and A Frenchman than those of us who focus on finding what we have in common and being good neighbors.
corpdronejuly··on Why Japan Looks the Way It Does: Zoning [video]
They are though. This varies regionally, but they're both multimillion dollar industries that push very hard to make their goods affordable to increase their available customer base.

I grew up in a lower middle class neighborhood, and every other house has a bench and some weights. Many of the families saved up for a treadmill or elliptical, and woe betide the child who thought they could use it. Someone on every block(usually more wealthy than the area average) had an above ground pool, and the neighborhood kids would go over and hang out there all summer.

corpdronejuly··on Southwest operational meltdown as hundreds of flights canceled or delayed
I love stories like this. It's so much harder to push our hardware to "the speed of the device" anymore, and hearing stories about others doing that is cool.
corpdronejuly··on Facebook Is Weaker Than We Knew
This is basically why I'm back on FB despite my many account deletions.

Ultimately to participate in civil society in my community I have to be in particular FB groups. I'd much rather meet people at local events, but the past 2 years basically I can either be isolated or on FB

Earthship, heatpump, and this... getting pretty close to a dream house TBH.
corpdronejuly··on Almost All of Facebook’s Top Christian Pages in 2019 Run by Foreign Troll Farms
They have that kind of algorithm, but most people want, or at least behave as though they want, outrage bait, and cute content farm affirmations. The moment you take a moment to be proactive and have ownership over your experience the algorithm happily shows you less crap and more people.
corpdronejuly··on Almost All of Facebook’s Top Christian Pages in 2019 Run by Foreign Troll Farms
Just hide every content farm I find, and my feed is my old school friends day to day lives, local marketplace ads, and DnD Mini-painting groups. The worst thing I see are ads that are irrelevant, or my uncles deranged rants about his local politics.

Took me about 2 weeks of hitting hide from content farms to train the algo to steer me away from that junk.

corpdronejuly··on Prometheus Fuels (YC W19) Closes Series B with $1.5B Valuation
Well that answers my question about crypto waste heat and useful work.
corpdronejuly··on Prometheus Fuels (YC W19) Closes Series B with $1.5B Valuation
I've often wondered if I could justify a crypto mining rig if I used the waste heat for something, literally anything, useful. The tech is interesting and I want to for the sake of "doing something cool" but the environmental cost has me iffy on ever trying.
corpdronejuly··on Home Price to Income Ratio
The issue then becomes silly games with shell corporations hiding how many homes people own, which pushes homes into the hands of larger landlords who can afford to pay someone to play those silly games.
corpdronejuly··on Home Price to Income Ratio
The issue is that those kinds of mixed use neighborhoods are literally illegal in most American Suburbs. Strong Towns goes over this, but our zoning laws are basically designed to create and exacerbate this problem long run
corpdronejuly··on Minimal APIs at a glance in .NET 6
The bigger issue for me will be the way that these kinds of things tend to split communities.

It doesn't do big enterprise devs much good if we have a lot of cool new features if there's no path towards using them in our 20 year old legacy applications that keep the business running.

corpdronejuly··on But down in the underground, you’ll find someone true
The biggest thing to keep in mind when "gatekeeping" is that it's more important to step up and take on the role of a "initiator" or "sponsor" into the culture, and pass on the community knowledge that makes the culture a special place.
corpdronejuly··on But down in the underground, you’ll find someone true
I'm always amused by this, because I have had to opportunity to DM for clergy several times, and my current group is run by our Deacon.

DnD started out as a kind of fantasy where we have the power to fight darkness directly. The way the genre has evolved has changed that, but to a large degree it's still a game where we act out stories and "practice being good guys."

corpdronejuly··on Virginia maps out optional per-mile road fee program for 2022 launch
Which might push our shipping back to more efficient ways to transport goods and services than caravans of big rigs.
corpdronejuly··on Stripe: Thinking Like a Civilization
Usually because of the terms of service.

That said the fastest way to a resolution is often exactly this. Either get a lawyer to send a letter saying you're gonna file in court, or just file for arbitration yourself.

If money on that scale is at stake, this is a comparatively cheap way to make sure a real human looks at the problem.

corpdronejuly··on The Winners of Remote Work
Why do you imagine that rural towns are all terrible suburban sprawl?

The issue is that we have allowed our built environment to become too centralized. In that sense the Boom Cities ARE the problem. Instead of one strip mall a dozen corner stores on an old school, "It's a wonderful life" small town main streets we have Times Square, and a bunch of overbuilt "new urbanist" attempts to mimic the magic that took 200 years to build.

corpdronejuly··on At the world's oldest social housing, rent hasn't changed since 1521
You are absolutely misunderstanding the medieval mind, and many modern religious minds.

Many people today believe in the power of prayer for the dead to help the state of the souls of the departed. Not a majority, but enough that you probably know a few who don't speak about it precisely because of the incredulity people express when people actually believe their religion, especially Christianity.

corpdronejuly··on Ask HN: Google is confusing me with others in a harmful way – what can I do?
Why on earth are we providing free labor to fix googles mistake though?

I get why we might to help the various Ms Vassell's who are caught up in this though, but why are we pretending that Google is being reasonable here?

corpdronejuly··on Ask HN: Google is confusing me with others in a harmful way – what can I do?
> I am saying OP decided to take a risk. A calculated risk and now OP is letting others feel the negative consequences of OP's calculated risk.

You are laying blame for Googles action on OP. Google associated an innocents image with the OP, not OP. Google then demanded that OP take an action to undo Googles action, and demands that OP take new actions to undo thing they did not do.

>because a search engine behaves the way search engines do.

What utter nonsense. Some engineer somewhere did the work to create a system that autogenerated the knowledge panel. Now people are upset because Google demands that we do free labor for them to undo the mistakes of their system.

Googles obsession with being the authoritative source of knowledge and that we fix their mess is so clearly the unjustifiable behavior here that I'm baffled at how you can imagine that their practice here is reasonable.

corpdronejuly··on Ask HN: Google is confusing me with others in a harmful way – what can I do?
I kind of hope this is the outcome, and that they let us know so we can have the opportunity to donate to help pay legal costs. This kind of thing is a nightmare.
corpdronejuly··on Ask HN: Google is confusing me with others in a harmful way – what can I do?
The OP choose to write and publish a book, about controversial material under their own name. That was a series of choice clearly made to manage risk while taking a stand against a cult.

Google choose to associate write an algorithm to associate names and faces with zero verification. Then google choose to not provide any substantial way to appeal the algorithms ruling.

You're trying to equate a reasonable choice to proactively manage risk with an automated system that has decided to not allow people to manage that risk. That seems unreasonable on it's face.

What am I missing about the tools provided to undo Google's knowledge panel decision?

Glad to hear it!
corpdronejuly··on Show HN: Earthly – Better Builds
Even better would be support for Windows instead of WSL.

I've really come to be frustrated with the a pattern where developers treat "it builds on Ubuntu LTS WSL2" as the same thing as "it works on windows"

Could I do something like run one build on a windows CI host and also test that things behave the same way on linux and mac.
