coreyrecvlohe··on RIAA CEO Hopes SOPA Protests Were a 'One-Time Thing'
Exactly.
coreyrecvlohe··on RIAA CEO Hopes SOPA Protests Were a 'One-Time Thing'
Spot on. There's no other reason for a NYT op-ed other than to send the message that: "Hey we're doing what you paid us to do; what do you want from us?!"
coreyrecvlohe··on Dreamhost asking users to change passwords after database breach
It's more cat and mouse, as complexity grows with computing power, there is a gap between the state of the art, and commodity systems that are sold for profit in global markets. Because UNIX works so close to the hardware, it is especially prone to novel methods of attack if left unattended.
coreyrecvlohe··on Request for Startups: Kill Hollywood.
This was actually something the MPAA successfully lobbied to kill. http://www.ifc.com/fix/2010/07/futures
coreyrecvlohe··on SOPA not Dead. Hearings to Resume in Feb.
This is the logical next step.
coreyrecvlohe··on Fight SOPA/PIPA -- let your visitors call their senators in 1 click
Really awesome app, great job!
coreyrecvlohe··on Pinterest knocked off by Samwer brothers
You do have to keep in mind what the Samwer brothers are doing is executing a fairly well known business strategy, taught in all introductory management courses. They are essentially letting others (Pinterest in this case) find the product-market-fit, then they launch their own version in other respective markets. Say what you want, but don't blame them, thank the education system.
coreyrecvlohe··on SOPA Opponents May Go Nuclear
Forget meteorite, it would be a Suprnova.
coreyrecvlohe··on SOPA Opponents May Go Nuclear
Huge play if they pull this off. This could really set the stage for increased leverage as we move into 2012. There must be a show of strength that strikes at the core of the D.C. machine. This isn't just over people downloading Ashton Kutcher movies, this is about taking down startups that are in direct competition with the distribution players, this is about going for the juglar and using Congress to pick winners. Google, Facebook, Ebay, Twitter, Paypal, Wikipedia and everyone else needs to step their game up; this is going to be a long haul.
coreyrecvlohe··on NodeJS is now the most popular repository on Github
Silverlight was popular? When did this happen...
coreyrecvlohe··on Camera dropped in the ocean, owner found through Google+
Right on.
coreyrecvlohe··on ECMAScript 6 looks promising
You've obviously never used CoffeeScript.
coreyrecvlohe··on Number of "Stop SOPA" letters sent by state
Awesome job, great thanks to yourself and the many donations for pulling this off without a hitch.
coreyrecvlohe··on SOPA Doomed? Pelosi, Issa Speak Out.
Encouraging news, but the war isn't over yet.
coreyrecvlohe··on Internet Community Shut Out of Stop Online Piracy Act Hearing - Again
The fact that they can't even stream the video from the hearings properly would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.
coreyrecvlohe··on Tell congress to stop SOPA with a physical letter
Great idea, just sent letters to both of my Senators.
coreyrecvlohe··on Instagram Engineer Challenge solved with Javascript
Great job! Excellent coding style btw.
coreyrecvlohe··on How to Pick a Language
Perhaps, I do like the quote at the end though about Javascript:

"To make a music analogy, JavaScript is a band that becomes famous for cheesy pop songs, and only later earns indie cred as discerning fans discover the cutting edge artist underneath the cheesy pop exterior."

coreyrecvlohe··on Zynga Chief Seeks to Claw Back Stock
"I don't know anything about the internals of Zynga"

You said it.

coreyrecvlohe··on Business People: Stop falling for "founders have to code"
This is wrong. Business people are trained to drive efficiencies within mature markets and established models. Founders are about discovering markets, which means adapting at light speed to new contingencies, knowing the code front and back, and being able to learn fast. If you're an MBA, by all means jump into the commanding heights and do your thing, but otherwise, hackers have to be the core.
coreyrecvlohe··on Live Blogging the Making of a Node.js Twitter Clone
Excellent, looking forward to the progress!
coreyrecvlohe··on Ron Conway, Chris Sacca And Others Invest 800K In Dotcloud (YC S10)
Very promising concept. This could be the killer app for the cloud. Good luck!
coreyrecvlohe··on Paul Graham's Hackers and Painters is $9.49 on O'Reilly's deal of the day.
Excellent text, eloquent argument that takes to task the modern notion of entrepreneurship and what it means for today's innovators.

I really enjoyed reading the parts that called on developers to challenge old players in new markets; inspiring stuff.

coreyrecvlohe··on Icon search engine
Really useful site. The usual method for myself is to use advanced filters through google, but this is definitely more optimized.
coreyrecvlohe··on HP Slate Officially Launches for $799
Windows 7? HP, come on, you're better than that.
coreyrecvlohe··on Ways Your Startup Needs To Be Getting Customers
Great post, truly a comprehensive list of all the differing strategies commonly available to startups and establishments alike. Looking forward to "Metrics Every Startup Should Know."
coreyrecvlohe··on How Facebook Can Become Bigger In Five Years Than Google Is Today
Let me just say from experience that Facebook ads haven't really generated the same type of return as Google ads. The thing about Google ads is that they are really good at capturing demand that is already out there, like for instance in a niche market where people are looking for a particular product or service (example, search "bike" and get advertisements for bikes of different types, etc.)

What I find is that money spent on Google is money spent on trying to get infront of people "who know what they're looking for." With FB, it's sort of the other way around, where you have all these people you can get infront of, but the demand is more opaque, and you're really searching for it instead of capturing established channels like with Google search terms.

All of this is really just chatter, only FB can know how to monetize FB, because they have the data, they have the information required to make a decision on what to do, and chances are, like with Google (remember in the early days they had no business model), they'll figure it out through just sheer luck or chance. What's amazing is that they have gotten this far already.

coreyrecvlohe··on What We Pay For
Great site. Just today Ezra Klein of the Washington Post did a piece on a proposal to mail a 'receipt' to tax payers for services rendered, so people stay informed about the proportion of their dollars spent annually. I think it's a good idea.

coreyrecvlohe··on Interview With Mark Zuckerberg On The “Facebook Phone”
Basically agree with all his notions about HTML5, which he seemed to mention a lot in the interview. Also the horizontal strategy makes perfect sense because FB wants to be the defacto identity tool for any and every device. Why fight a device war when you don't have to, instead just concentrate on being the platform.
