Because SNI. Also, State (sponsored) Actors are certificate authorities. HTTPS is the biggest scam in internet history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Name_Indication
coretx··on Is the 80 character line limit still relevant? (2008)
It's as relevant as the 4:3 aspect ratio still being the best as it correlates to the physical properties of our eyes. That said and knowing that nearly every modern day OS is capable of resolution independent functioning; we should start rendering interfaces based on the distance from the eyes to the screen and it's size. Someone probably already did the math on this.

Low hanging fruit. Part of a game involving the adversary to weaponize the stupidity of the crowd. That's us. Easy targets. We only see and know the tip of the iceberg if lucky. Those cables however, that's critical infrastructure. So there is professionals working on it. They don't need our "help". We don't need to worry, so yes - everything is fine.

North Stream was a existential threat to the EU, especially the Baltic states and Poland have no interest in being sandwiched between Russia and Germany again. Many German politicians are directly or indirectly bought by Russia, the most notable example being: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerhard_Schr%C3%B6der As Germany was so stupid to close down their nuclear installations and coal mines at more or less at the same time without investing in enough backbone and LNG installations; rising parties such as the AFD would rather side with Russia and get cheap gas instead of helping Ukraine and the rest of Europe. This is why more or less everyone could have done it. I would have done it myself if i was living in eastern Europe. Matter of survival.

If you want to know if they are affected, search for "Looking glass hetzner". It will help you better than ICMP PING. See https://bgp.he.net/AS24940 for example.

NATO countries don't or barely respond because subversion requires a response. Russia is constantly pulling low hanging fruit hoping for as much commotion, fear, etc. It's party of their destabilization and subversion tactics. This is why authorities are not loud, but calm & stoic. And it works, very few people around me are aware of the fact that Russia has blown up NATO ammunition depots, liquidated politicians and has spread bombs on mail flights. During WW2 the British had a great slogan: /Keep Calm and Carry On/. It actually helps the war effort, unlike public outcry, wild speculation & unrest.

coretx··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
We went from hardware we could trust & control and gopher + plain html to hardware that spies on us and have limited control over and fully turing complete software with access to all hardware & DRM. - and no sensible way out.

Maybe not only Google, but everyone needs to rethink the concept of a browser.

coretx··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
Because nation states are socio/psycho-paths.
coretx··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
Belgacom, Diginotar, Stuxnet Anything involving Fox-IT. Just to mention three cases involving black mailed ministers and involving corrupt intelligence public servants. The Dutch are not competent, they are corrupt as hell. Access to anything Dutch is for sale and on bulk discount.
coretx··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
Nation states don't have friends. They have interests.
coretx··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
They do, they just care less when it's friends doing it. 5-eyes did the same with the entire European parliament. The incident response & reporting ( clean up crew ) was done by a firm who got sold to a British intelligence daughter not much afterwards. You can't make this shit up. Another famous example would be from the previous cold war era. Dutch telephony routers had Hebrew manuals so they required personnel from Israel for "maintenance". They wiretapped the whole country.
coretx··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
Compel is a euphemism for a "friendly" visit to your wife & children or elderly parents. The western equivalent is to lawyer someone to death. Don't be naive.
coretx··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
Or they convict you for money laundry because you developed a crypto phone they can't crack and don't have any legal means to destroy you. ( Dutch example, and yes - the guy payed taxes everything, they made him hang because of a single client of a client his client his client being involved with shady things. ) State-Spite, Repression and such is rising globally. The rule of law is gone.
coretx··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
Western society is criminalizing and repressing such culture, so China has already won because they fail at doing the same.

It's not inherently different, how we deal with it is. Drawing conclusions from linear seemingly causal events is nuts considering that most start calculating from the future desired outcome to the present.Someone may do something stupid on purpose in order to gain later. Adversaries may do the same, the math can quickly spiral beyond human/individual comprehension. For a fact at least for a part of whoever may be involved in some way or another. Complexity is not random, and we can choose our initial conditions to our liking, causing $outcome. We now have entire DC's crunching numbers, not just a bunch of nerds at Bletchley Park. Their ability to calculate and manipulate odds for something to happen far exceeds ours, that's different now. Yet we read snippets from people speculating, drawing conclusions based on, what exactly ?
coretx··on Ask HN: Is patio11's salary negotiation guide relevant in today's market?
Ask for a yearly inflation correction.
coretx··on Ask HN: How to tell legitimate consulting interview opportuities from scams?
By asking half of the money upfront and meeting them at a safe space. Just don't sign anything without consulting a lawyer.
coretx··on Steam games will need to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pages
Advanced DMA/IOMMU attacks are hard, soft and firmware specific. In order to detect it, you'll have to do a ton of very expensive work all the while you risk destroying the customers soft, firm and hardware. Good luck explaining the judge what you did.
coretx··on Steam games will need to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pages
Those who do, choose to do so and generally take responsibility for their actions. It's not the same as tainting a kernel and just winging it.

DRM is not going away because the extra power it provides can be monetized.- Shareholders and investors want money at all cost. Ask anyone in any creative field. Very few are rights holders. They have food on their table despite DRM and their rights being coerced from them.

I'm already counting down the days for eBPF to blow up in our face. But admittedly, it's the cheapest way of gaining more capabilities and privileges than you need, thus it's here to stay.

Hindsight bias. States, like us human beings, are not nor ever have been completely in control of themselves and exist out of different "parts" making the whole. Also, when expected outcomes don't align with perceived results, it's usually best but not very human to doubt yourself. You never have all the information you need for making the best decision or opinion. "Dark Budgets" vested in firms like Dwave via firms like inQtel, steer research about quantum computing. Whoever has Shor/Grovers going first, has a advantage equitable to winning the AGI race... That too can win wars. Nothing is simple and perceived simpleness is on the clock, for everyone.
coretx··on Show HN: I built an app to use a QR code as my doorbell
It has been a while since a _useful_ new app came along! Thank you, i appreciate it to the point I'd be willing to pay for it.

Feedback: Teach people to never ever scan a QR code if they don't know for a fact who created it. For if you don't, you'll be part of the crowd who is conditioning people to scan all the QR codes they can find without thinking...

There is people using chef/kitchen knifes for murder too. That doesn't mean we should regulate them for army use and monitor all cooks. Yet this is what many but certainly not all decision makers are doing. Good, fundamental, stuff is happening too, such as RPKI for example. Some "politics" is definitely not happy about that, but its good for the internet.
coretx··on Using an 8K TV as a Monitor
The general advice provided to me, and relayed by me is eyes centered @ 2/3th of the screen. The best advice received and relayed by me regarding posture might surprise you. If you struggle with posture, stop caring about what other people might think about your posture. Changing/Tweaking posture all the time might look bad, but it also tends to mitigate the effects of being frozen in bad posture(!) The health impact is too significant to ignore.
coretx··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
The destructive EEE strategy is replaced by a constructive poisoning the well strategy. That's arguably moral progress while there is no legal or financial incentive to do so. That's praise for Nadella, not Ballmer.
