If you’re looking for a vantage point, it’s actually possible to book a visit to top of the big ball shaped building you can see in the skyline. It’s called reunion tower. https://reuniontower.com
core_dumped··on What it's like living without an inner monologue (2020)
I think this “vision” they see or the “sound” we hear in our heads is literally the deeper mechanisms of those parts of the brain being either more or less strongly connected to our overall perception system. We can’t override the direct sensor feedback, but we can cause enough self-induced “backpropgation” to affect the overall result we experience. In this case I also think it’s totally reasonable for some to not even have a “inner monologue” as there are stranger perception based mutations such as the one where you can’t recognize faces. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/face-blindness/#:~:text=Prosop....
core_dumped··on The young people sifting through the internet's worst horrors
An asteroid does not have the ability to care about those things, it’s a rock. It can’t choose to leave the earth alone in the name of empathy.

Corporations are made of humans, who, it’s been shown, care about other humans a lot of the time. I think the more we rely on these power structures for our own self preservation, the more we start to weaponize them against weaker forms (normal people) as a form of active defense.

I like the reference to Cthulhu, it really is like a higher order life form. Workers are the cells, infrastructure the body, and the c-suite is of course the ravenous mind. You as a human don’t care what happens to a cell in a Petri dish, the same way corporations don’t care about what happens to individual people. As a human, I find this evil, and wonder if there are perhaps other higher order life forms (economic systems) we can construct that aren’t as harmful to their own composition.

core_dumped··on Disney's earliest Mickey Mouse enters public domain as US copyright expires
Mickey Mouse is quite literally Disney’s mascot. The same Disney with global theme park locations. It’s clear that Disney has far more prominence than Star Wars and friends combined. Hell they even own Star Wars now.

If you asked any random person on the street, chances are they know who Mickey Mouse is. It doesn’t really matter what “content” is made with him. Disney can just keep pumping out cheap CGI kids shows for brand recognition alone and Mickey would last for at least another generation.

This comment is generating far more snark than the parent to be frank.

Not everyone wants to use a USB-C dongle so they can use their old 3.5 headphones, and even more people don’t really care about being able to have a mouse and keyboard on their phone in the first place.

If you want me to show you what the “thoughtful discussion” is: The parent made the point that phone companies have been following a trend of locking down physical access in favor of wireless tech. I’ll add that this has not only removed beloved features, but now that everyone is being forced down the Bluetooth/wifi stack we are far more susceptible in public when exploits like these rear their ugly heads. There are roundabout solutions like using a USB-C dongle but… really? Does anyone find that to be effective at all? What about when you want more than one connection? You need a splitter or a hub. It’s just such a seemingly useless “improvement” if it feels like we’re going backwards having to buy extra stuff.

If you want to reply with your disagreement, please do so in a thoughtful manner. Please think before you post. I come to this website not for snark, but for thoughtful conversation ;) Ty

core_dumped··on Godot: A Collaboration with Google and the Forge
While this is true most of the structure of the language is taken directly from Python, which depending on your interests might be a little more useful than learning C#. The only syntactical differences I’ve found so far are the additions of var, const, match, how the walrus operator is used, and of course all the nice godot editor specific keywords. The built-ins have almost exactly the same naming scheme, you can still use global functions like len on any collection, I could go on…

I would argue that someone who starts programming on gdscript today would be able to transition into Python with little to no overhead.

core_dumped··on Glenn McDonald, founder of Every Noise at Once, gets laid off from Spotify
Wow, this guy designed some of the algorithms that informed much of my taste in music. I’ve discovered so many new artists, bands and genres thanks to those daily mixes.

There’s something so wrong with this that someone so foundational to the success of the project was allowed to be let go in a mass layoff.

core_dumped··on I'm going to experiment by being Blind and Alone for 24 Hours
This is a really cool part of the wiki page:

"A possible use of phosphenes as part of a brain to brain communication system has been reported. The system called BrainNet, produces phosphenes using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The goal of the research is to connect thoughts brain to brain using a system where signals are detected using electroencephalography (EEG) and delivered using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). An experiment was conducted with 5 different groups, each contained three people. The subjects were split into two groups. Two subjects functioned as the senders, and were connected to EEG electrodes, and a third person functioned as the receiver, who wore the TMS helmet. Each person was stationed in front of a television screen with a Tetris-style game. The senders had to determine if there was a need to rotate the falling blocks, but without the ability to rotate them – only the receiver was able to perform this operation. At the edges of each screen, were two icons with two flashing lights in two different frequencies, (one at 15 Hz and the other at 17 Hz). The sender focused on one icon, or the other to signal that the block should be rotated to the right or the left. The EEG produced a unique signal, which was transmitted to the TMS helmet of the receiver, who perceived phosphenes which differed for the 15 Hz and 17 Hz signal, and rotated the block in the relevant direction. The experiment achieved 81% success.[27] These results could eventually lead to mind-to-mind communication technology"

Does anyone know if other research into this method has been explored yet?

I found N-O-D-E a few years ago when I was just starting to get into programming. Their early raspberry pi gadgets were so cool and encouraged me to go out and try to make my own stuff. On top of that their channel used to do semi regular tech news updates, and after a bit of a hiatus it appears as though they're posting again which is exciting.
core_dumped··on How to survive a ransomware attack without paying the ransom
Firewalls can only protect against what's known. Once you've invented or discovered a method the firewall doesn't know about, you're trusted as much as any regular program. Sometimes even changing the binary or payload slightly will thwart some firewalls because they're precise machines looking for precise signatures. It's not super easy to get past a firewall with a known vulnerability, but not impossible. With a 0day the firewall is almost irrelevant.

People always say I'm being pedantic when I point that out, but I think it's a really important distinction to make to someone who's not aware, especially in the context of their security.
core_dumped··on My First “Conway's Game of Life” Program in Tribute to John Conway
It honestly bothered me at first too, but now that your comment isn't [dead] I can finally reply and say it was because I was too lazy and didn't want to write extra code / bash script for it. It works perfectly fine with just a header file, and isn't dissimilar to something an early year University student would write, which is definitely the caliber of this project.
