coopierez··on Twenty questions is a weird game
A friend of mine once told me he got stuck at the first "is it tangible" question with trying to answer whether or not "Germany" was tangible. Depends if you are referring to the landmass or the concept I suppose.
coopierez··on India lifted 415M out of poverty in 15 years, says UN
Markets can exist in non-capitalist societies. Markets exist to use money as a medium to convert one form of goods/labour into a different form of goods/labour. Capitalism meanwhile uses goods/labour as a medium to convert money into more money.
coopierez··on 10 years of FTL: The making of an enduring spaceship simulator
Perma-death, with a procedurally generated world, combined with a clear destination / goal (to get to the next system). One can beeline straight for the goal or risk more time exploring for the prospect of a greater reward. It matches the "2010s Indie" definition of a roguelike.
coopierez··on Ask HN: Why has quality of YouTube reduced drastically?
Search on the iOS app store is awful too. You type in the exact name of the app you are looking for and have to scroll through 10-15 vaguely related results before you get to the one you actually want.
coopierez··on A brief history of nobody wants to work anymore
> If you want to tackle privilege instead of getting a relatively shitty job in your 20s... you're probably privileged as hell.

So would you consider your comment "tackling privilege"?

coopierez··on Ask HN: Has anyone made any serious money selling Android apps?
I agree that there are... issues with Squenix games from time to time on mobile (e.g. font issues on the new remasters of FF I-VI), but none of the games I mentioned enforce cloud saves.
coopierez··on Ask HN: Has anyone made any serious money selling Android apps?
If you haven't played them yet, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy I-VI are all available on mobile app stores. DQ IV-VI in particular are very charming and hold up well (imho!).

If you're more of a western RPG guy I believe Icewind Dale and Baldur's gate are on there too.

coopierez··on Today’s JavaScript, from an outsider’s perspective (2020)
Its dependency management used to be a real mess though. It has got a lot better in recent years.
coopierez··on On anti-crypto toxicity
I agree that it's aimless to just be toxic or mean to (most) crypto fans, especially those that are genuinely arguing in good faith.

That won't stop me chuckling at those that have been duped by a blatant pump and dump.

coopierez··on The computers used to do 3D animation for Final Fantasy VII in 1996
There's MoltenVK - I was under the impression that was similar to Proton, but for Vulkan running on Metal.
coopierez··on How Go mitigates supply chain attacks
It's part of the culture of frontend programming.

In the past I've needed to display a timestamp as something like "n weeks ago" (in a mac app). My first instinct was to write a quick function to do the transform. Then I can tweak it and extend it later to fit my app's needs.

However when I asked the web app team at my company to see their code so I could use the same initial set of intervals, it turns out they use a library to do it. The first instinct of a frontend dev seems to be - even for very tiny, single function solutions - download a library.

coopierez··on OVHcloud fire: SBG2 data center had no extinguisher, no power cut-out
Hopefully 2000 years in the future people will talk about the US healthcare system with similar incredulity.
coopierez··on Go Replaces Interface{} with 'Any'
> Much simpler than Python which (and this is subjective) has made some questionable design choices.

One of the reasons golang is so simple is that they move very carefully on issues like this. It has its benefits and its drawbacks.

Adding operator overloading kind of opens a can of worms here. If they add that, why not arithmetic types? Why not exceptions? Why not x, y, z... Everyone wants just _one_ extra feature that would improve the language. Trouble is everyone disagrees on what that one feature should be.

coopierez··on Is there such a thing as good taste?
Which beliefs are objectively better?
coopierez··on Writing a Linux-compatible kernel in Rust
> What's actually happening is that some major projects are evaluating - slowly - whether Rust could be integrated in some areas.

Related to your comment: the writer of curl was investigating Rust. [https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2020/10/09/rust-in-curl-with-hyp...]

The first comment on that article complains that Daniel is being pressured by the Rust community, and he responds:

> “They” don’t change anything here – I do. This is a project in which I’m working on a change as described in this post. It’s not a conspiracy.

coopierez··on It feels like America is running out of everything
From the perspective of a _more_ socialist (but still ultimately capitalist) European country, it seems that the group throwing themselves off a cliff are the more purist capitalist types in America. There are other solutions than full-on Soviet-style planned economies.

Ultimately, we live in a society - a rising tide lifts all boats.

coopierez··on x86 assembly doesn’t have to be scary (2018)
I suppose it depends how you learn! For some it is likely better to do what you suggested and start with what's current and then work backwards - but for me I needed to know why certain limitations were in place, and that required me to start at the beginning and work forwards.

As a newer developer this is a problem I've had with computing in general - a lot of newer languages, web frameworks, etc. are solving problems that I only understand through seeing what came before me. For example - why should I care about memory ownership if I've never tried to write a large-scale C program?

coopierez··on It feels like America is running out of everything
Just because you can't understand what a group aspires to doesn't make them nihilists. Is this coming from the Jordan Peterson book of philosophy?
coopierez··on x86 assembly doesn’t have to be scary (2018)
On the contrary, I felt that understanding where x86 had come from helped me understand the reason why the registers were named what they were, why some instructions are longer than others, etc.

It's confusing as a beginner to encounter the "di" and "dx" registers, and to understand why the 8-bit version of "r13" is "r13b" but the 8-bit version of "rdx" is either "dh" or "dl".

coopierez··on NFT projects are just MLMs for tech elites
But in the case of the house, I've seen many completed houses before, so it's a bit of a false equivalence.
coopierez··on Half of American kids have lead in their blood, doctors say
> people with more woke attitudes

This is extremely broad and it feels like a bit of a strawman - a classic feminist issue I've heard is how office chairs are often designed more for the average height of a man, therefore subtly excluding women from the workspace.

"people with more woke attitudes" would absolutely be on board with measures such as ensuring Asian people get the eye care they need (I suspect).

coopierez··on Google employees who work from home could lose money
Prop trading firms pay more, I don't know if they pay the _most_ however.
coopierez··on Please, enough with the dead butterflies (2017)
Not all fiction is attempting to tell a story and pass it off as realistic. A lot of fiction is deliberately and transparently fantasy. A lot of fiction is also metaphorical.
coopierez··on Some biologists and ecologists think social media is a risk to humanity
That looks interesting. How do you plan on moderating the platform?
coopierez··on Highlights of new technologies introduced at WWDC 2021
Maybe they are affected by the parts shortage.
coopierez··on What Oxford taught me about posh people
This is purely anecdotal, but there is a certain pretension to Oxford that doesn't seem to be present at Cambridge.
coopierez··on Grazing Goat Problems
Something that gets my goat - goats don't graze, they browse.

Great article though!

coopierez··on LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online
> I do agree with the right for those people to hold that opinion and being able to talk with others about this opinion, without it ending up in huge fights and drama.

When one has the "opinion" that a group of people should be locked up for simply being who they are, then yes you should expect some backlash for that.

coopierez··on European Super League collapsing as all six English clubs withdraw
They would get an initial ~€300M for signing on [1], then a further €130-200M per year [2]. That presumably doesn't include matchday income, which could be a lot higher per match than now due to the higher quality opposition / teams involved. This would also presumably grow alongside the popularity of the competition.

Right now Premier league clubs get around €100M from broadcasting rights [3: this source is from a few years ago but gives a good breakdown of the clubs' income]. Broadcasting income is a lot lower in Spain and Italy, hence those clubs needing the ESL more. The ESL clubs planned to continue in their own domestic leagues too.

Here is a breakdown of the Champion's league money (which the ESL proposed to replace): [4]. Each decent team which reached the knockouts (so most of the teams involved in the ESL) would earn around €40M, with the winner earning around €80M. So winning the Champion's league would be worth less than simply competing in the ESL.

This all doesn't include sponsorship money.

Edit: I also want to note that of the 6 English teams, only 4 can qualify for the Champion's league every year. The others usually go to the less lucrative Europa league, for which the payout for winning is less than for simply participating in the Champion's league. This year those clubs were Tottenham and Arsenal - so even more benefit for those two clubs.

coopierez··on Legalizing gay marriage in Crusader Kings III with Ghidra
Well it's already been compiled. If the `if` is changed and the entire codebase is recompiled it might rearrange large sections of code, significantly changing the resulting binary. The patch will then be potentially quite complex.

So the resulting patch will be significantly smaller if only a few bytes need to be changed.
