coolso··on America needs an actual plan to boost domestic energy
> But the Republicans who’ve pushed this line are playing a comically transparent game, where they call for policies that raise the price of gasoline and then blame Joe Biden for gasoline being expensive.

I had to stop reading after these comically misleading statements.

For one, gasoline was already costing almost double under Biden than it did under Trump, long before the attack on Ukraine. Biden and this author can do all they want to shift the blame to Russia for inflation and high gas prices, and yes that situation had contributed, but that just doesn’t mesh with what really happened and it’s amazing they’re playing this angle so soon when the past year of high-priced everything due to inflation and high priced gas due to inflation as well as Biden’s anti-oil policies and rhetoric literally existed for, well, a full year before the attacks.

Secondly, the ban on Russian oil was hugely bipartisan: 414-17.

coolso··on How CNN's Jeff Zucker and His Cronies Manipulated the News
I mean, all Trump had to do was sneeze and CNN, MSNBC, NYT all worked themselves into a furious seethe for the next two weeks about how that sneeze was literally basically Hitler and that’s it, that’s the final straw, the world is coming to a literal end now because he’s an unhinged fascist dictator or something.

Mind you this is all coming from “respected” and “establishment-accepted” news organizations to boot.

coolso··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
> Bodybuilding.com misc & 4chan are super toxic communities.

There’s that word. The world is super “toxic”. The aforementioned sites allow people to speak freely, which can result in negativity, but they’re also bastions of freedom and creativity and everyone’s thoughts being equally visible.

One can easily argue that that’s far less toxic than Reddit’s style of everyone being the church mom that silences and admonishes everyone that says something “problematic” or what the congregation considers unacceptable. Where’s the fun in that?

There’s definitely a certain group of people who hate not being able to silence others, since if they can’t silence and censor their opponents, their arguments don’t really hold up.

coolso··on Pilot FriXion Erasable Pens: A Comprehensive Guide
> Aren't all pens erasable with bleach though?

No - pens with pigment based inks (the ones that were advertised heavily for being great for writing checks and signing documents securely with) will stick around until the bleach disintegrates the paper back into pulp.

coolso··on America produces enough oil to meet its needs, so why do we import crude?
> comes from environmentally destructive practices, which is a damn good reason to prefer imports.

This globalist-centric way of thinking is why we’re currently paying $5/gallon, the highest amount ever. Such a “hidden” tax on the working class is why we should shun imports and be self sufficient both with oil as well as manufacturing - or at least as much as humanly possible.

coolso··on Apple announces 27-inch 5K Studio Display
The problem is, some monitors aren’t “slightly matte” - many are very matte, and you can’t tell just how matte they are into you receive them, since the finish is always just called “matte”.

Glossy isn’t ideal but I’d definitely take it over spending $500 on a 4K ultra sharp display only to view everything through a fine layer of grainy rainbow colored dust.

Apple’s nano-matte technology seems like it could be a wonderful albeit expensive compromise, but I know I and many others are willing to pay the premium.

coolso··on The new silent majority: People who don't tweet
> But a lot of them voted for a really terrible President

In fairness, the media did a really good job making the low gas prices, low inflation, low taxes, record low illegal border crossings, well-handled foreign policy, and record breaking speedy vaccine development of the last administration somehow seem like the most evil thing ever, so a misled public can’t really be blamed too much for who they voted into office now.

I think more than anything they were just tired of hearing about it so they voted for the current guy for a little media break.

coolso··on Apple announces 27-inch 5K Studio Display
Finally an AR coating on a monitor without the grainy sparkly look! I bought 3 highly rated monitors last year and returned all but one because the anti reflective coatings were visually distracting and made the screen look dirty and unsharp. The one I kept still has the effect, but to an “acceptable” degree relative to the others and I was tired of returning monitors.

Hopefully other manufacturers will follow suit - or at least start releasing glossy monitors as an option, for people who don’t want to view things through an ugly grainy sparkly coating.

coolso··on Four-year-old Israeli child tests positive for polio, first case since 1989
My ex had the same issue while on a vegan diet - and she was an adult. Random dizzy spells and faintness to the point of almost passing out.

It boggles my mind anyone would ascribe to a diet that literally requires vitamin supplements through artificial means in order to be complete. And those are just the obvious deficiencies.

coolso··on Four-year-old Israeli child tests positive for polio, first case since 1989
> Many vaccines aren't vegan-friendly (they're often grown in eggs)

Do these vegan anti-vaxxers have an issue with aborting humans still in the “egg-stage”?

Sorry, what administration did Putin start a war with Ukraine under? Interesting that the one who was Putin’s supposed puppet, ended up being a better puppet master than the elder experienced statesman we supposedly have in office currently.

I repeat: I think Ukraine, and the world, could do well with some mean tweets and mean phone calls in place of what we have now!

coolso··on YouTube suspends The Hill for playing clip of Trump denying election results
You know that’s not what I meant (and likely not what Trump meant either) by “invasion” right?

You can prove anyone “wrong” by playing with definitions or getting super technical about things.

coolso··on YouTube suspends The Hill for playing clip of Trump denying election results
Whatever Trump was doing to handle Putin certainly seemed to prevent Putin from doing any Ukrainian invading. I think Zelensky and the entire world would prefer more Trump phone calls and less Putin aggression right about now.
coolso··on AI Model Detects Mental Disorders Based on Web Posts
> Reddit, which offers a massive network of user forums, was their platform of choice because it has nearly half a billion active users who discuss a wide range of topics.

Let’s be honest here… Reddit was their first choice because of the high prevalence of mental disorders amongst its users. One wonders why they didn’t choose Twitter instead in that case… but better to test the AI system’s load capacity before tackling such a gargantuan task I suppose.

> Only Republicans lie about elections — when we do it, it’s “fortifying” and “election integrity”.

Bingo, it will be couched in those terms as well as "voting rights". To them, if you aren't picked up and given a free ride by an Uber to a polling place, then fed and given free water while waiting in line, then given a free ride back to your house, the election is being interf- I mean, "voting rights" are being trampled.

No surprise, given the fact that Google execs were literally crying tears of fury and despair in a company meeting after Trump won in 2016 [0]

Over the past year I've switched from Google search to DDG; Google Maps to Apple Maps; Chromecast to Apple TV+; and Drive to Dropbox. I've held off on switching away from Gmail, but I'm switching to something else tonight. Suggestions welcome.

By the way, not that I would support this at all (since I believe in free speech), but any idea if any speeches from Putin or Xi, or official government accounts from either country have been banned from Twitter or YouTube et. al. like our own US President's social media accounts were? I'm guessing not likely, given that they've really done nothing about ISIS accounts in the past, or posts from those on the "left" side of the culture wars calling for and supporting outright violence in US cities or against individuals.

coolso··on Why are Kansas City’s airwaves filled with pro-Putin ‘Radio Sputnik’ propaganda?

coolso··on U.S. firm Cogent cutting internet service to Russia
Yeah, generally speaking, when a foreign country screws you over, either directly or indirectly through a company based in said foreign country... you tend to hate the foreign country and its people, not your own country. Unless you already hate your own country (most people don't, outside of the American left).
coolso··on Bypass Paywalls: a browser extension to help bypass paywalls for selected sites
The NYT is my main source of news, but I'd strongly discourage everyone from actually financially supporting it - much as I'd strongly discourage everyone from actually financially supporting Fox or CNN.

The truth is the NYT is a heavily biased, establishment bootlicking far-left progressivism propogating propaganda machine. They will do whatever it takes to present the opposing view as racist, supremacist, sexist, anti-semetic, anti-gay, and bigoted, while anything far worse but on "their side" is handled with kid gloves. Trump sneezed? Well that's racist, plus he wants you to drink bleach, literally, so we're going to cover that heavily for the next week. Something bad happened? It's Actually Trump's Fault. Here's Why. Trump was totally going to destroy America, except, well, that didn't actually happen, at all, but they're still trying to push that narrative.

Biden bungled Afghanistan, gas prices and inflation is through the roof, Putin invaded Ukraine under his watch, Biden very prematurely declared "independence from the virus" a year ago (!!!), Biden flip flops almost as much as Trump, has more deaths under his belt from COVID than Trump... everything is swept under the rug, a passing mention in all but the most egregious examples, and even then they treat him gently. I recently read an opinion column from a long-standing columnist there basically telling us how we should all support Biden because he just, like, has a really tough job, you know, and would you even wish such an important and consequential job on your worst enemy?

The NYT needs help for sure, but not financially, unfortunately.

coolso··on One Humanity – DOOM 2 Level
Of course, I agree. But the lives of drivers on public roads also have value, do they not? Furthermore, let's remember that the felon in question died because he was an uncooperative, aggressive criminal under the influence of drugs - not, truly, for any of the reasons the rioters purported to be rioting against.

Perhaps if fewer people of all races (given that more than double the number of whites are unarmed when killed by police than blacks - about 19 vs 9) were belligerent towards police when apprehended during the commission or suspected commission of a crime, the thin blue line that separates the violent criminals of this world and law abiding citizens like you and I wouldn't be forced into such situations where one misjudgement or slight overreaction here or there could end up in a life or death situation.

Fight against brutality of all sorts, sure, but the forced "equality" angle is cringe - and incredibly transparent - and most of the country knows it.

coolso··on One Humanity – DOOM 2 Level
Hopefully someone will create a "Bundle to Reimburse Small Businesses, Property Owners, Ordinary People, Firefighters, and Law Enforcement Harmed by All the Riots". An estimated $2B in property damages alone, not to mention all of the injuries to both regular citizens and law enforcement [0]. All for a guy who just wanted to drive on public roads high on meth and fenty. :/

coolso··on Russia to punish ‘fake news’ about Ukraine war with 15 years’ jail

coolso··on Covid-19 immunity holds up over time
People who love telling other people what to do and how to live have had an absolute field day with the pandemic. The amount of admonishing and screeching about everyone needing to wear their masks and get vaccinated and how mandates are good and how people who are against mandates are Nazi's, has been absolutely insane. These people get a sick joy out of it, they revolve their lives around it, and I'm really not sure how they're going to cope now that the pandemic appears to be coming to an end for the time being - or at least, now that it's being accepted as a part of life, finally.

It's not so much monetary profit they're receiving, but rather the self satisfaction knowing that they totally schooled someone on the internet about proper COVID etiquette - while simultaneously ensuring a red wave this November (which is why the shaming has toned down within the past couple weeks now that the reality is setting in about the midterms).

coolso··on Huawei MatePad Paper – eInk Tablet
What’s with all the CCP defenders and shills mass-downvoting and flagging every critical comment in this thread? What are you trying to hide? Instead of downvoting into oblivion Reddit/China-style, why not engage in healthy debate?

The tides have turned, the US is finally standing up to China (Biden is following in Trump’s footsteps though not as much as he should) and it’s only going to continue.

coolso··on Huawei MatePad Paper – eInk Tablet
Huawei is a Chinese corporation. That’s a little different than simply being made there (which companies are finally starting to move away from)
coolso··on Climate change is hitting the planet faster than scientists originally thought
Yeah but then there are also plenty of less-sexy headlines showing how often the climate change doomsday prophecies were completely wrong.

I tend to be wary of people with a motive shouting things from the rooftops about how we all have to give more control to an ever increasing globalization government(s) or we’re all gonna die.

We’ve seen just how especially bad globalization can screw us over these past couple years, and we’ve also seen data that other countries (who take advantage of us) aren’t pulling their fair share of the responsibility when it comes to the environment - all while the US weakens itself in comparison.

coolso··on Climate change is hitting the planet faster than scientists originally thought
Same reason Facebook changed to Meta. When a brand’s reputation has been sullied and mocked and delegitimized as a result, often the only option is a rebrand under a completely different name.
