coolestguy··on Show HN: A modern Music Player Daemon based on Rockbox firmware
>Planned: Stream from Tidal

Yes please - Tidal's app is genuinely woeful and doesn't seem to use native API's in MacOS

coolestguy··on CEOs are hugely expensive. Why not automate them? (2021)
If it's so easy, why haven't you done it?
coolestguy··on Report: Tim Cook could step down as Apple CEO 'as soon as next year'
The guy who oversaw the silicon change is the one who's likely going to be the next CEO

coolestguy··on Foreign hackers breached a US nuclear weapons plant via SharePoint flaws
"using the biggest software suite tailored for offices/IT environments is a red flag"

coolestguy··on Fears over AI bubble bursting grow in Silicon Valley
>it was called "google without ads and seo spam"

... if you could talk to it like a human and have google search hold a conversation with you - sure. That distinction is a big big big difference though

coolestguy··on ChatGPT Pulse
>Blockchain is probably the most useless technology ever invented (unless you're a criminal or an influencer who makes ungodly amounts of money off of suckers).

You think a technology that allows millions of people all around the world to keep & trustlessly update a database, showing cryptographic ownership of something "the most useless technology ever invented"?

coolestguy··on In Maine, prisoners are thriving in remote jobs
>Dehumanization seems to be the trend that the US is leading on right now.

Criminals have to want to stop doing crime before they can be rehabilitated.

coolestguy··on Fair Access to Banking
That's exactly what ethereum is - you're able to move funds without permission, trustlessly, instantly.
coolestguy··on Australia widens teen social media ban to YouTube, scraps exemption
No you're right, thinking about laws & second order effects isn't a government thing
coolestguy··on Online sports betting: As you do well, they cut you off
There are a lot of things that are a net negative to society but since we're not slaves, we're allowed to do things that can be fun but -ev if we choose to
coolestguy··on How to (actually) send DTMF on Android without being the default call app
What's the feasibility of taking an existing default calling app & adding the real way to do DTMF, then making the user forced to use this app as the default calling app.

E.g. the calling app from AOSP, LineageOS or GrapheneOS

coolestguy··on Doctors Warn Accountants of Private-Equity Drain on Quality: You Could Be Next
Theoretically, if those two firms are good at their jobs & also good at marketing (including referrals), then yes sure.

Realistically, 75% of professionals aren't worth their salt & so many people will just continue going to the PE firm controlled places since switching won't get them any better service & the 2 hold out firms in this scenario would pragmatically raise their prices.

coolestguy··on The Consequences of Limiting the Tax Deductibility of R&D
That's not at all what a tax write off is. A tax write off is when you spend money, and it reduces your profit. You've really spent the money.
coolestguy··on The Consequences of Limiting the Tax Deductibility of R&D
How does deducting R&D in software equal magic money? Isn't it just making the deduction timeframe the same timeframe as the actual expense/money paid?

It's weirder that you spend money on R&D today & then get a 20% for 5 years in a row, no? You've spend money, but also can't deduct it from your profit so you're both spending money and paying taxes on that money as if you had it.

coolestguy··on Yi 1.5
No - 16gb of ram is barely enough to run regular applications if you're a power user let alone the most breakthrough computationally heavy workloads ever invented
coolestguy··on Robinhood Crypto Gets Wells Notice from US SEC
>The idea that crypto assets aren't "securities" and thus not subject to SEC regulation is, and always has been, laughable.

Except, ya know.. the courts.

coolestguy··on M3 MacBook Air Supports More External Displays Than M3 MacBook Pro
No - displaylink is a software solution & native hmdi/thunderbolt etc is a hardware solution.

Display link docks have their own chips in them

coolestguy··on SEC Formally Accepts BlackRock Spot Bitcoin ETF Application for Review
It's a spot etf
coolestguy··on SEC Formally Accepts BlackRock Spot Bitcoin ETF Application for Review
>Can anyone summarize in layperson's terms any standards that these securities must meet?

No, not even the SEC & that's the cause of major court cases currently.

In normal security offerings, there's disclosures coming from the issuing company about financials/profitability etc but btc/eth are peer to peer networks so there's no-one in the middle to do these things & it is very different to normal securities.

coolestguy··on Ripple notches win in SEC case over XRP cryptocurrency
>I skimmed the opinion

Then don't comment on it

coolestguy··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
I don't think you do get the point - the point is that unless you define every single word in a rule (like how legislation has a definitions page), it's very hard to do simple content moderation in a way that everyone agrees
coolestguy··on Proposed SEC order to freeze, repatriate Binance.US assets
You bought IOU's from a centralized entity, you didn't do anything with crypto.
coolestguy··on An open-source alternative to QuickBooks
I don't know why you need a third party.

In Aus all our major software providers do it directly with a bank connection - why can't this program.

coolestguy··on An open-source alternative to QuickBooks
It never seems like any of these opensource accounting solutions have bank feeds? Why would anyone manually import bank info when an automatic feed exists.
coolestguy··on The end of the accounting search
>why are people stuck on QB when there are seriouly decent alternatives put there, like xero?

When you're an business owners employee you don't have time or authority to change accounting software because you're overworked & thought of as a cost centre.

When you're a business' owner you do whatever your accountant says which is usually a legacy software because a lot of tax preparers & accountants aren't actually in the trenches anymore and don't know about the granular bookkeeping part of accounting and how much better software has gotten in the last decade.

When you're an tax preparers employee you don't get to talk to the client.

When you're the tax preparer director/owner you don't use software anymore.

coolestguy··on Tax Evasion at the Top of the Income Distribution: Theory and Evidence (2021) [pdf]
Your country doesn't allow you to file taxes on a "cash collected" basis rather than an "invoiced but not collected" basis?
coolestguy··on Binance sees $2B in outflows as troubles compound
>All it takes is enough people freaking out and dumping their investments to make yours worthless too. You'll still own everything you bought but it could be worth zero

Every speculative asset ever

coolestguy··on Binance sees $2B in outflows as troubles compound
Crypto is not collapsing though, all crypto loans are fully collateralised on chain & a bank run is not possible in the same sense
