> More like, matured into white collar crime.

Honestly this is the first “advanced” mafia scheme I’ve heard of in a while.

Last time I heard about a mafia crime it was a very sloppy hit that sounded more like what you hear from teenagers in Chicago shooting at each other.

Though tbf it could easily have always been like that and I’m just blinded my media bias about a group of people I’ve never known form a time I’ve never known.

Unfortunately the company has a big war chest, and I have a small war chest, and was priced out of court through legal shenanigans and delays the corporations lawyers could afford.

Just bring back fucking pistol deals. I have a better chance of defending myself there.

> For the other half the country, we really don't want to Federal laws to be decided by people in other states that don't share the same values.

Funny people can look at Arabs or Indians and identify “these people have a diametrically opposed culture and cannot peacefully coexist with me”, but can’t extended that to people that look like them and are also diametrically opposed.

It’s delusional to try and maintain a country that’s developed such opposed cultures. You can try to force peace for a while, but it always bubbles back up.

Effective at what? No one is facing any consequences anyway.

I’m very confused. Rural voters can connect with a dynastic NYC real estate developer, but Vance at least has origins much closer to typical Americans.

Is it just media nostalgia? Trump was on the TV shows they liked and so they trust him more?

Reap what? The second your side gets power again, your politicians will tuck their tails between their legs and let them off with a light scolding.

They’re far too embedded politically to ever face consequence too. I hope someday we can get a serious anti-corruption candidate.
cool_man_bob··on Ask HN: Best practices for research code?
It makes sense. I can’t speak for the AI/ML field, but a lot of the software jobs I’ve seen in scientific research areas were pretty obvious they wanted scientists who could do a little code, as opposed to developers who can do a little science.

There’s another solution: a culling.

Take the now useless people and get rid of them. AI will effectively usher in a new era of eugenics in which your right to live is determined by your economic value.

> I think the protests over the weekend show that if the 2026 election were subverted then a lot of the population would take to the streets.

Ok? They’ll be pummeled by the police and natguard again. Maybe whatever sort of “revolutionary republican guard” Trump eventually creates for himself too.

cool_man_bob··on Why companies are lying about mass layoffs
> Perhaps its the golden handcuffs, or maybe we're being over-dramatic.

I tried finding an escape from the handcuffs, but my career was also a dud, so I never had the insane salaries. Most jobs such harder, and the ones that don’t I’m never going to be able to do. There were a few things I was interested in, till I realized changing careers like that is insanely expensive both in real and opportunity costs and doesn’t happen often for a reason.

At this point, I want to just find some cheap property, away from people and maybe with some nice amenities like a nearby river. That’s the only was I see myself contented now.

I don’t give a fuck how cheap you make bread and circuses. The only goods and services I give a fuck about anymore are the ones that won’t be made cheaper with automation.

> I regret being born too late to work somewhere like Bell Labs, SGI, or Sun.

I feel the same, and especially about video games.

I would never work in the modern video game industry. It seems really miserable to be overworked and underpaid to work on some design-by-committee game that I don’t even care about.

But I hear stories of some Of the companies back in the 90s that seemed to magically muster the capital to sit down and put out effectively what was a passion project, but also commercialize it.
