Keeping the beast in my nature under constant attack

constantly··on Solopreneur rollercoaster: first $1 online to depression
This sort of work feels gross to me. Just grasping and grasping at whatever random widget or piece of ad software or widget that someone will spend a few dollars on to increase people clicking on ads and dropping it as soon as it’s not profitable enough. It feels like some churn of lowest common denominator work and the software equivalent of basically a grifter working random ethically-gray odd jobs.

And this culminates in them working for (and name dropping in the article repeatedly) someone I’ve never heard of, but upon looking them up I learned that they’re basically the ultimate grifter, selling “how to make $10k from home in a month” sorts of courses.

This whole thing feels gross, from the initial work to leveling up to being able to achieve their dreams of working for some arch grifter.

constantly··on Paris mayor plans to triple SUV parking tariffs to cut air pollution
I was getting coffee this morning and walked by a parked truck of some new model of Chevrolet. I was aghast at the front end. It was (guessing) four or five vertical feet of chrome. And then the hood above that. Basically a pedestrian death sentence as far as I can tell. These things don’t need to be on the roads with regular traffic.

constantly··on US agency will not reinstate $900M subsidy for Starlink
I think they’re not comparing to hypothetical performance of others, but comparing it to the threshold the FCC set originally, which SpaceX decided was achievable and so applied for subsidies based on their believed ability to hit the numbers.
constantly··on US agency will not reinstate $900M subsidy for Starlink
As far as I can tell in a cursory reading, SpaceX Starlink applied for subsidies with enumerated requirements. They cannot meet those requirements, so the subsidy is rescinded.

Seems straightforward and doesn’t seem to matter, as far as I can tell, how many other companies couldn’t meet the requirements or don’t have the hardware to meet those requirements or whatever.

Unclear why this is “blatant corruption” or “crony capitalism” and in fact seems to be based in facts. Can you explain?

constantly··on 23andMe changed its terms of service to prevent hacked customers from suing
Yep. A small tangent for anyone who has seen these: they’re very clearly not specifically enforceable. I got a window banged up by things falling off a truck with this signage, and the first thing they said when I called their “How Am I Driving” number the first thing they said was that they were not responsible citing this sign. Fortunately that sign was non binding. :)
constantly··on Beeper Mini is back
I don’t think anyone thinks it’s impossible for apple, or even relatively difficult for them. I also don’t think anyone doesn’t understand that they try to lock people into their ecosystem. Not my favorite choice of theirs, but largely a business choice they’ve decided to make.
constantly··on ‘Inert’ ingredients in pesticides may be more toxic to bees than thought
Somewhat worse, depending on your perspective, is that inert ingredients are confidential business information so while EPA has a list of what inerts are in what pesticides, that list is not publicly shareable. So, you as a consumer or citizen don’t even know what inerts are in the pesticides being used. Unless the manufacturer shares them, but they don’t typically, because they’re the proprietary information that separates Company A’s generic pesticide using active ingredient X (plus confidential inerts) and Company B’s generic pesticide using active ingredient X (plus their I’m sure very different inerts).
constantly··on Tesla Model Y 2nd in new vehicle registrations in the US, overtaking Toyota RAV4
I am too. I do like the Model Y and have driven them hundreds of miles while doing rental cars. I ended up with a different EV because of Musk. I don’t make it a point to tell people this, and I don’t imagine anyone really cares why I got the particular car I did, but ethically and philosophically I didn’t get a Model Y.
constantly··on Tesla Model Y 2nd in new vehicle registrations in the US, overtaking Toyota RAV4
Respectfully to your Elon Musk / Nazi comparison you’re making (basically Goodwin’s Law right? Eventually someone was going to bring up hitler…) if the third reich were in power and selling Volkswagens I wouldn’t be buying one even if no one else cared.

constantly··on YouTuber sentenced to 6 months in prison for obstructing probe into plane crash
But you’re more likely to kill someone when the remote forest fire you sparked by intentionally crashing your plane grew and took out a bunch of firefighters and a village than you are to kill someone driving to work.
constantly··on YouTuber sentenced to 6 months in prison for obstructing probe into plane crash
I presume this is hypothetical. A reasonable start would be to see the difference average views on a video and views on this particular video times as revenue per view.

Admittedly I’ve never heard of this guy and avoid most YouTube “creators” and it got a view out of me out of morbid curiosity and so I could speculate on whether it was pre planned.

constantly··on YouTuber sentenced to 6 months in prison for obstructing probe into plane crash
My understanding reading the original incident report, to my recollection, was that there was enough there that random grossly negligent youtuber trying to get clicks for an ad + a dozen cameras + parachute + not following safety protocol + not giving enough time of trying to restart before immediately bailing meant the beyond reasonable doubt conclusion would almost certainly be that this was premeditated.

constantly··on Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job?
This is cool. If it were written into some movie I’d accuse the writer of lazy writing. Kudos to you.

A similar coincidence happened to me early career. I had finished an internship, wasn’t sure what to do full time after, and ran into my old boss in a grocery store. He had been impressed with my internship work and seeing me reminded him of me and we started talking, soon enough he invited me to be employee #6 at his new venture. It worked out really well.

constantly··on Show HN: Onsites.fyi - Curated Big Tech Interview Experiences
My observation has essentially been all the random complaining you see online where “entry level requires experience,” which seems counterintuitive at first, is not counterintuitive if you consider than internships are really that pre-experience that “entry level” requires. So my unpopular opinion, and what I’ve observed in real life as being on the hiring committee or panel at top companies has been that for new grads top internships are an even more important signal than top schools.

That is, when hiring a new grad for an L3 spot or whatever, assuming they met the bar for the interview and in fact did an interview, first we look at interview performance, then internships (with an internship at our company with a successful outcome being the best), then school, then recommendations from current employees. Typically someone needs to have a good interview and one or more of the other things, more if less good at interview, potentially only one if outstanding at interview.

Yes, I’ve had people recently on campus use this term. But to be totally fair, the point about it being a cringey term is not wrong.

constantly··on Cybertruck Launch
Any ideas for how to redesign these? The thought is compelling.

I’m thinking about it and even with EVs you’d still want four wheels, want to put the battery flat on the bottom for various reasons. So the base seems like it’s four wheels with a flat platform.

Building space for 1-6 people on top thought and I seem to arrive at the same designs that already exist. Thoughts?

constantly··on The 1988 shooting down of Flight 655 as a user interface disaster
I’m confused by the “aligned left” comment. Analogously this seems like saying left alignment in my word processor would mean the word processor would need to know what I was going to type before I type it.

Can you explain?

constantly··on Please don't use AI to get on the global leaderboard
Someone buy aidventofcode.com and run it similarly with more progressive and modern rules.

edit: curious about the downvotes. AI is here to stay, but the Advent of Code site specifically states that “[t]he leaderboards are for human competitors; if you want to compare the speed of your AI solver with others, please do so elsewhere.” So creating a new site in the same spirit, but with progressive rules, seems like exactly what they’re advocating for themselves.

It's not a new standard so this comic really doesn't apply here. It's just being opinionated, for once, about what to use. I welcome it strongly, as I do tools like Black for Python, which do similar things. Just set that up in CI for anything and all my code looks the same, removing some overhead of readability.
constantly··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?
I still use it daily. It seems the same to me as it was. Maybe some subreddits no longer exist, but as I predicted they were just replaced with other similar subreddits to fill the gap. But realistically they were totally fungible anyways, so it’s not as if I care that I’m seeing videos on “r/video” or r/videos” or something else. I don’t notice any increase in spam, which was a big “you better agree to to our demands or else” point.

Anecdotally scanning the main comments in the all subreddits, I don’t see any change in number of comments anyways. Honestly without quantitative data on comment quality or comment numbers, I’d be skeptical of bias by anyone willing their pet desired outcome from api changes into existence.
