constantlm··on DeviantArt upsets artists with its new AI art generator, DreamUp
Given the uproar from artists around SD, this move from DeviantArt seems a bit tone deaf.
constantlm··on Estonia paved the way for e-government
I dealt with Estonia’s e-resident system in the past, and it’s absolutely fantastic. A model all governments should look to.
constantlm··on Adobe can’t Photoshop out the fact its $20B Figma deal is a naked land grab
The author does not seem to quite understand what Figma is, and where it sits in the market.
constantlm··on Ask HN: What is the lowest hill you're willing to die on?
Nah my PC case has a glass window and a red glow inside and it’s awesome.
constantlm··on Tesla assigned my Model 3 to some random person in Europe
Meanwhile I can’t register my BMW on the BMW app because it was first registered in Japan and then exported to New Zealand.
constantlm··on Search 5.8B images used to train popular AI art models
I'd love to know how this works. I entered my own name for the lols, and it returned mostly paintings of the Cape Winelands in South Africa where I grew up, which is pretty creepy.
constantlm··on Async Postmortems in a Global, Remote Team
Instead of “shipping more code faster”, we should be shipping more measurable customer value, faster.
constantlm··on Running Stable Diffusion on Your GPU with Less Than 10Gb of VRAM
Thank you - fixed it on the post title. Not sure it'll update on here though.
constantlm··on Running Stable Diffusion on Your GPU with Less Than 10Gb of VRAM
The guide posted is for Windows 11.
constantlm··on Running Stable Diffusion on Your GPU with Less Than 10Gb of VRAM
This is indeed a very thorough, albeit not very nicely named, guide.
constantlm··on Firefly III: A free and open-source finance manager
+1 on the Pocketsmith recommendation. I've tried several others (YNAB, Lunchmoney, etc.) and I've been using Pocketsmith consistently over the past three years. It has integrations with just about anything, has support for crypto, etc. and their support is top notch.
constantlm··on Startup Trail: The Game of Startup Survival
I’ve never considered describing FrostPunk as stressful, but it really is! Same with Banished. Can highly recommend both.
constantlm··on Why I left Google: work-life balance
Work life balance not in hours spent, but rather in the sense of satisfaction and energy to do things (including the work itself)
constantlm··on Wikipedia RFC to stop accepting cryptocurrencies passes by majority vote
In the context of their yearly guilt tripping banners asking for money in a manner that sounds like Wikipedia is on the brink of death, this virtue signaling is disappointing.
constantlm··on Linux on an M1 Mac
The project might get accelerated with some of your time+money.
constantlm··on TUIs
Second time I've seen this on HN, and it's also the second time I got excited thinking it has something to do with Tui, a pretty special species of bird we have in New Zealand.

Terence McKenna called 5 grams an heroic dose.
constantlm··on DIY Airless Bicycle Tire
The sealant viscosity is likely too low at those temps to effectively seal punctures.
constantlm··on ‘Trojan horse’ drug treated British patients with six different forms of cancer
>their illness was well advanced and considered untreatable

Seems the 25% is up from a perceived 0% possible success rate.

constantlm··on Ask HN: Is web development still a viable career choice?
It's all about using the correct tool for the job.
constantlm··on Ask HN: Migraine prophylaxis?
I've had one experience in Indonesia where I had a massive amount of noodles with a massive amount of MSG in it. Soon after consumption of said noodles, I had a migraine attack. I also had a ton of work stress at that point, so I'm not 100% that MSG was the actual trigger for me.
constantlm··on Ask HN: Migraine prophylaxis?
Stress seems to be a trigger for me, so I actively try and keep my work related stress as low as possible - eg. not taking on work with tight deadlines. I also find that drastic changes in my caffeine consumption can also trigger a migraine.

I'm "lucky" in the sense that I start losing a significant part of my vision before a migraine attack, at which point I might smoke a small amount of low quality cannabis (I get extremely anxious when I realise I'm about to get a migraine and I've found this relaxes me and helps for the nausea) as well as taking an oral dose of Rizatriptan Benzoate. I've not had success with other triptans I've used, so I always make sure to have Rizatriptan Benzoate close by.

TLDR, by managing my stress levels along with keeping an eye on my caffeine intake, I've not had a migraine in months.

constantlm··on Designing Google Maps for Motorbikes
Haha yes I was quite happy to go down the mountain after Đà Lạt. I didn't expect it to be that cold. But yes, once out in the rural areas it becomes a lot easier to get around.
constantlm··on Love letter to Vue
After a few years in the Ember ecosystem, I started using Vue a few months ago and damn it's amazing. Of course you can't compare the two at all. I've found Vue and the structures it imposes on your application a bit easier to reason about than what I've found with Ember. It could also very well be that having learnt Ember, I picked up Vue very easily. Either way, I love Vue, and outside of Ember I can't say I've loved any other front-end framework.
constantlm··on Illegal Production and Use of Banned CFC-11 in China's Foam Blowing Industry
It seems like China is going in the right direction with regards to enforcing environmental standards, so I have no reason to think that this won't result in crackdowns from government.
constantlm··on Designing Google Maps for Motorbikes
Experienced the heat issue when we did Vietnam South to North on a bike some months ago. Phone got so hot you couldn't touch it. Had to wing it in the end and stop every now and then to see how lost we were.
constantlm··on Ultibo – Environment for embedded development on Raspberry Pi
Aaah thanks! I looked at this earlier and couldn't find out what it was from a quick look and closed it (pfff millennials), but this sounds great.
