consp··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
At compile time of when the pr department decided to change it?
consp··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
> You'd have to supply the energy externally (i.e. some sort of beam propulsion), but getting any significant fraction of g out of such a system (with human-sized payloads) seems unlikely within the next centuries, especially as the distance increases.

Or some form of ram scope, plenty of H everywhere, but those also have the issue of you collecting things while going at relativistic speeds.

consp··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
I would argue there is a broad difference in ethicality and reason between the bottom and top of the food chain, making these examples less clear cut. If your plan as a low level employee doesn't work out you still get fired and the consequences are far greater.
consp··on The Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
So instead of dictating research to unsolved, or largely unsolved, problems, we are now as "a society" directing compute power towards sniping research outcomes.

I thought this was an ebay thing for people with too much free money, but it seems a bit larger.

consp··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
And you can say goodbye to your PhD at that point.
consp··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
It's the "computer says no" defence.
consp··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
I hold both camps equally in low regard. Depending on the time of day this blog is hyper focused on either one of the companies and can do no wrong. All LLM companies and associated entities have a track record of fudging the truth to their needs and following big money without actual concern for the wider world. Whether this is out of directed act or misplaced idealism is up for debate.
consp··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
My guess is it's referring to ESXi's GPL'd (or not GPL'd) code and the 2016 suit which failed (on procedural grounds).
consp··on Splash-free urinals for global sustainability and accessibility
Install the urin-no next to it to help "improve" the aim.
consp··on TiVo to charge money for skipping commercials in your own recordings
> Here in France, some Internet+television providers have started implementing a new rule : you can't skip commercials on recorded shows.

Wait until you hear of the extended version of this: Some longer whole day live sports on Dutch RTL (and others, it's catching on) have the option for playback but you have to watch from the start and cannot fast forwards in any way. Want to watch the last match? You need to pay more or play several hours of ad ridden TV first!

They are just m3u8 files so extract that, drop it in VLC and you are fine. But 99.9% of the populance will never be able to do that.

consp··on I refused to train the AI that could replace me
> I don't think you are under any moral or ethical obligation to train your replacement.

Depending on where you live, there might not even be a legal obligation.

consp··on RSA-260 Factorized
> Then again, we're all supposed to switch to post-quantum.

Depends on what your goal is and if you like more footguns.

consp··on Netherlands pulls gold out of the US
London has an old school gold exchange. Pretty much you can buy and sell by moving a part between vaults (at least that's how I understood it to work in the past). Now I expect it to be just a spreadsheet but who knows.
consp··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
Cheap chinese tracker, prepaid sim and traccar instance? That's what mine has.
consp··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
My experience with touch is it works ok as long as you do some arbitrage. I've implemented four touch quadrants on my display and it works good enough in the rain (quadrants are linked to play/pause/next etc for music) that it doesn't do anything I don't want it to do. Only downside is sometimes it misses a hit in the rain.

Weather sealing is quite doable if you accept you need a boatload of glue and you coat your 3d printed case with proper car lacquer or at least a thick coat of acryl. Use reinforced filament, and at least something 70c+ resistant (so no ordinary PLA).

I've driven it plenty in the rain in NL (not this display, my own).

You don't need AI to decode these protocols. People have already done that. If you look a bit further than asking you favourite LLM for obvious answers there is plenty of OS code available for the LS, KT and Bafang uart protocols. Still recommend you avoid them, they are pretty poor and CAN is way more reliable.
consp··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
> eInk is the right display tech.

I used a transflective LCD. Works fine. You don't need UV protection nor have temperature issues. (Yes also build my own two years ago but I don't do pr so no slick website).

consp··on Google AI Mode shows same products 21.6% more expensive than traditional search
Then again, that makes it more expensive for the inconspicuous buyer who has no idea, which is a considerably larger population than HN readers.
consp··on New type of dice guarantees no tie when deciding who goes first
That would preclude everyone from having a throw. Which is likely more fair but doesn't feel fair.
consp··on Three sites made 215,128 “best software” pages for AI. Perplexity cites them
I've had gemini claiming code would compile and run while also outputting the same variable in the same sniplet with "fork" "frok" and "fokr" in the name. I'm not surprized it's trained on garbadge.
consp··on Dutch central bank moves share of gold from U.S., Canada to London
Stated in another article it said the reason is it cannot be used as a bargaining chip during trade disputes. They specifically mentioned it would likely be more difficult to use in emergency situations when located in North America (without mentioning specific reasons).
consp··on Dutch central bank moves share of gold from U.S., Canada to London
It's the 11th largest in the world, or about 7.5% of the US reserves which is a lot more than the gdp difference (4.4%)
consp··on Dutch central bank moves share of gold from U.S., Canada to London
No, but "removing" around half of it from one place is quite a bit. Though I doubt any single physical kg ever moved more than a few meters to the buying countries vault. edit: They physically moved 27 tons, the rest was traded away and bought again in London.
consp··on FBI Probes Service Selling 153M+ Drivers Licenses
I'd be very interested in which ones, since I've never received anything despite being in several big breaches (and have received the boatload of spam to prove it). I'm pretty sure this is very country specific.
consp··on 9th Circuit sides with states in Kalshi gambling fight
I dont see how the uk system's small parties are not marginalized. The larger parties still claim outright majorities with 35% of the votes or less (last time 172 seat majority with 33.2% of the votes) so they are irellevant.

If I am not mistaken all disruptions to fpp two party systems eventually settle back into them, maybe not the same parties but two nonetheless.

consp··on Samsung's Processing-in-Memory (PIM)
So you basically dispose of cache for the memory region used? I wonder what the offsets of the cache misses is going to be in practice (the article addresses it but there is no solution/impact given by samsung).
consp··on U.S. gov't moves to suppress pushback on data centers
So it is a low efficiency power station with some servers attached to it.
consp··on Quantum battery upends the rules of charging
A week ago I traveled partly through Germany. On the highway stops we stopped (5 in total) only one had a working charging station and that one was only a single cable. There is a long way to go. It's probably better off the track though. (Don't need to charge but since I have a plug-in hybrid I do abuse the good parking spots if need be)
consp··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
The examples you provide are way more integrated into governments and organizations. LLMs are not even in the same country let alone postal code.
consp··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
What if the conversation is negative? I have very little patience for halfbaked ads disguised as posts. Some companies just show what they are and sell, but too often these days it's a memey post-like advertisement which will be a negative the next conversation "ah, yes that company with those annoyingly fake ads, just like their [product]". But I do not rule out I'm the odd one out and the people deciding the tools to for upon people fall for those ads.
