conmod278··on Coding Is Not Solved
Most of the problems people commonly encounter is solved by someone somewhere sometime. Today I wanted to add a simple search bar in a UI over log files in a directory. LLM ("through their unique ability to make the glue code adapt to any problems") solved my problem. That's all I care for now. Let people like Terry Tao push the frontiers. I am happy in my circumstance.
conmod278··on Coding is not solved
We developed languages that removed GOTO so that developers don't shoot themselves in the foot. We will surely develop harnesses that will ensure that majorly occurring problems are solved before they hit production.
conmod278··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
In thermodynamics, through cycles of expansion and compression, useful work can be extracted. Similarly through economic cycles, America is able to extract wealth from rest of globe.

Reservation in education institutions and government job which is used to solve caste system are just doing Eugenics in disguise. Only gene pool of rich lower caste people benefit.

The people who suffered are dead. The people who committed discrimination are dead. Yet the whole nation has to accomodate. Reservation must be done on Pro-Rata basis. If one state like Kerela is advanced, doesn't do caste discrimination and another like Bihar is very much into it. Then only Bihar state should reservation, not whole of India.

conmod278··on Gravity Seems Holographic. What Does That Mean for Reality?
All possible subsets of a Universal Set can be considered as Observers. So a Power Set is collection of observers. Power Set of Power Set is another such collection. So on and so forth. Powersets all the way up.
conmod278··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
If you read the article, one of the analogy points to this. Compressing everything to a point.

But I had the same question few months back. Asking Claude is fruitful in this case.

How about explain the problem and solution in 3 to 5 levels of details in a top-down hierarchical manner sort of like a decision tree. Let people decide how far they want to drill down.

What many people don't realize is why is America suddenly caring about manufacturing everything inhouse when Elites decided earlier Globalization was good, because China wants to command respect more than America. That is also the reason why Gold is pushing higher. If China was nobody, no nation would care for gold. So all these unnecessary downstream reasons distort what is actually going on.

If there was no China, Globalization would spread very strongly with Bangladesh manufacturing clothes and Milan doing the fashion show. All those calculations are coming undone. So please keep this main reason front and center when we discuss this matters.

conmod278··on A Model for Winning Survivor
"There are three ways to learn. The most noble is by thinking and getting to the truth yourself. The second, which is still pretty good, is by imitating those who do. And the third one is through pain."

In prediction markets, imitation is the best policy

conmod278··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
What if I am using Claude as a rubber duck where Claude is the crowdsourced version of all the human thoughts on that topic. It is rerouting all the thoughts ever recorded on that topic through the chatbox to me. Something synergistic could emerge.

conmod278··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
*"The Evolution of Human Science"* (originally published in Nature in 2000 as "Catching Crumbs from the Table"), collected in Stories of Your Life and Others.

It's a very short piece written as a journal editorial. Metahumans have advanced so far beyond human comprehension that they do all the original science, communicating via digital neural transfer that humans can't access. Human scientists are left doing hermeneutics: interpreting metahuman publications and reverse-engineering their artifacts, trying to decode work they couldn't have produced themselves. The editorial asks whether human science still has a point, and lands on a modestly hopeful note: interpretation is still a legitimate form of inquiry, and understanding metahuman work still expands human knowledge even if it isn't original discovery.

It reads rather differently now than it did in 2000.

conmod278··on Aligned to whom?
I think we should start training models to guess intentions. That's the whole game. e.g. If I dislike a particular short form video, what are the specific intentions I am conveying to the recommender system, (general category I don't like, the time at which it was shown, the combination of feed in which it came), these are all intentions I am trying to convey. In websites google analytics helps with clickstream tracking (or clickstream analysis, user journey mapping or behavioral tracking.) — the sequence of clicks and pages you move through is your clickstream, and analyzing it to infer intent. The same thing will need to happen in chatbots. Can a chatbot infer the specific instance of the problem I want to solve?
