conk··on Priced out of home ownership
A net migration out of California does not mean an increase in available housing. There are a lot of families (adults+kids) where the children grew up and then can’t afford a home in California and left the state. A household of 4 then becomes a household of 2 but the housing supply stays the same.
conk··on How many EV charging stations does the US need to replace gas stations?
If either circuit had arc fault or ground fault (or both) it would trip if you tried drawing power from both. Which is going to include pretty much any plug outside or in a garage in the past 30 years.
conk··on Raspberry Pi Ltd is considering an IPO
I received an 8 channel ESP32 board today that I’m planning to use to replace the failed ~25 year old control board that failed in my hot tub.

conk··on Show HN: My $1k self-install, off-grid solar backup build for renters
I’ve been considering this for my home. I have solar already but with an EV my usage exceeds my generation. Second hand panels like this ones in this article are cheap. I could get a set of those and sting them into an EcoFlow Ultra which has the solar inverter and ~5kWh battery. Then plug an EVSE directly into the 240v plug on the eco flow. Eco flow also has an API so I could get fancy with the software and change what gets charged based on the car or battery charge levels.

It would cost ~$6K. I estimate I’d save about $1500/yr from my electric bill. ROI isn’t great but most home projects have an even worse ROI so I still might do it just for kicks. Would also be nice to have a big Eco Flow battery I could use for other stuff.

conk··on Canoo spent double its annual revenue on the CEO's private jet
It’s a classic make vs buy decision. What base platform is offered by GM/Toyota/Kia/etc?

There are some examples where car makers (both EV and ICE) will sell components to competitors but in general this is pretty rare. Most companies want to control key aspects of their supply chain.

Rivian did use motors from Bosch but is now in the process of using their own internally designed motors. This allows them to build exactly what they need and avoid relying on Bosch for a key component of their vehicles.

conk··on Nvidia CEO says "coding is a dying profession"
No way any regulated industry is going to just trust some AI to write the code.

Imagine trying to get a medical device through FDA approval with firmware written by a bot.

conk··on Did Apple Just Make a Gambling App?
As you pointed out they don’t provide a link to a well know betting site and they give users the option to hide the odds. What more do you want?

Should Apple maps not allow you to route to a liquor store? Is the ability to do so enabling alcoholics? It is their ecosystem and they are thus enabling a very destructive addiction.

conk··on Did Apple Just Make a Gambling App?
I’ve never placed a bet on a game but I enjoy knowing the odds because it gives me some idea of who’s expected to win and by how much.

Don’t try to make gambling addition apples problem.

Hybrids and EVs can also stop (to some extent) with regenerative braking.
conk··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
IMO the lack of fumes/exhaust is my favorite part of owning an EV. Sure there are some downsides with EVs (more expensive to buy, less range, lack of public charging infrastructure) but those don’t impact me and I’d gladly take the negatives for a car that doesn’t smell every time I park it in my garage.
conk··on Generation Junk
Cars made in the 40s and 50s were very unreliable, required significantly more maintenance than modern cars. You had to service things like breaker points, batteries and carburetors every few thousand miles. Most modern cars can go 10,000 miles between checkups and major components can go 100k+ miles with no work needed.

conk··on Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche Finally Commit to Using Tesla's NACS Plug
J1772 also lacks a neutral conductor. The 3rd largeish pin you see in the plug is actually a ground connector. Its longer so that its first to make last to break which is a requirement for most ground pins. I assume both J1772 and NACS use their ground conductors for neutral when in V2H mode since a ground conductor wouldn’t really do much when the car is feeding power to the home. Both plugs have 5 pins.
conk··on GM says it's dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto because they're unsafe
“Essentially, the thinking is that if a car’s in-built infotainment system is good enough, drivers will be less likely to use their phone for what they’re trying to do while they’re behind the wheel”

If the car company makes me pay for another subscription to get Nav data or stream music then by default the infotainment system is not good enough. I’m tired of companies thinking just because I bought their product I’m ok with another ~$20/mo subscription service.

conk··on GM says it's dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto because they're unsafe
Yes which is a major factor in why I bought a Mach E and have held off on getting a Rivian for now.
conk··on DIY Home EV Charger
Except this DIY project could kill someone if it malfunctions. There are several inadequate parts of this design that make it a safety risk beyond the fire risk.
conk··on Electric vehicle battery prices are falling faster than expected
Getting rid of ICE was the #1 factor when I bought an EV. No stinky gas fumes in my garage, no more trips to a gas station to fill up. Worth the premium IMO. ~300 mile range, charge time, and charger network hasn’t been a problem yet.
conk··on Borrowers Got $127B in Student Loans Canceled
I’ll happily pay taxes to help other Americans achieve an education that allows them to contribute to society. Seems like a much better ROI vs other federal programs.
conk··on California employers must reimburse remote workers for all necessary expenses
My commute costs going into the office everyday for a year are far more than $1000/year. I estimate it’s about $4k/year and that’s with taking public transit & biking. Those commute costs aren’t covered by my employer. I’d gladly trade a $4K decrease in commute costs for a $1k increase in internet and electricity. Also internet is fixed so regardless if I’m remote or in office I’m still paying the same bill.

Who cares if a car is only utilized 10% of the time. At 10% use the car is going to last an average of 20 years. Use it 90% of the time and it’s gonna get junked in 1-2 years.
conk··on 'Terminating Internet Access over Piracy Claims Is Drastic and Overbroad'
Modern hospitals are designed to run ‘offline’ from infrastructure such as water, electricity and sewer for a period of time, typically a few days. When there’s a major disaster (earthquake, hurricane, terrorist attack) these services can fail at the exact time that hospitals see a flood of injured people.

I haven’t specifically looked into internet but I’d be surprised if they were unable to provide care with a down internet connection.

conk··on China solar module prices keep diving
I think if there was large scale adoption of PoE to power stuff outside of network equipment the regs would eventually catch up and it would have similar requirements line voltage wiring. 100W is more than enough to start a fire. 100W at 100V is enough to kill someone. There just aren’t as many regs because it’s new and not widely used. Building codes and standards are written in blood. One an apartment burns down because a bad RJ-45 connector started a fire the codes will catch up.
conk··on China solar module prices keep diving
A 48V dc circuit over a 12 AWG wire would provide less than 1/2 the wattage (power) available in a typical 120V AC circuit. You’re still going to need some circuits that can deliver 1500W to power appliances, space heaters, window AC, etc.
conk··on Rivian embraces Tesla's charging standard for EVs
CCS current spec/design can deliver up to 350kW (although few if any cars can take advantage of that today).

NACS claims it can provide up to 1MW (1000A @ 1000V). I think it will be a while before we see cars able to charge anywhere near this, but there is a trend right now of big EV pickups with massive batteries. Higher power chargers means faster charge times.

The only downside I see with NACS is you can’t level 2 charge using 3-phase power. This isn’t really an issue in North America because it’s super rare to see 3 phase power at someone’s home. In most of Europe homes do have 3-phase power and large loads like an EV are required to use it. This is one reason why Tesla uses CCS2 in Europe. The NACS connect doesn’t have the space for a 3rd power pin.
