confounded··on Meta's Mandatory Return to Office Is 'A Mess'
At least according to the Meta employees in the article, people are terrified of voting with their feet, because of the current job market.

As a result, many are communing hours a day, to sit on zoom calls. Wasting their valuable time on earth for the sake of a manager's dictat.

Things are good. But they can always be better :)

Management pretty often do not have the best ideas, and often the people doing the work know how best to do it.

confounded··on Let's write a treesitter major mode for Emacs
Out of interest, do you use Emacs as an alternative to Jupyter for interactive work (examining plots etc.)?

If so, which modes and packages do you use?

confounded··on Why Socialism? (1949)
They are ruled by an avowedly Marxist (state-capitalist) government, who have lifted hundreds of millions from abject poverty, in the largest economic miracle of our lifetimes.

I'm not saying it was pristine. But you make an extremely poor case against Marx, or the negative effects of US imperialism on the global poor.

confounded··on Older mouse brains rejuvenated by protein found in young blood
The whole idea relies on a hierarchy of power so unnerving it's the basis of folklore across human cultures.

Unlike costmetic surgery, your gain depends on someone else's loss.

There are likely to be supply/demand issues in a society with where citizens have free access to each others blood for recreational purposes.

confounded··on Data brokers selling license plate location and analytics data
Had never heard of these plates. At least the current models may well make the problem worse:

> "In addition to the flexibility of the display, the digital plates also sport a tracking device that will alert the police to the location of a stolen vehicle and allow for general vehicle tracking. While a lot of people can get behind the idea of never going to the DMV again, not a lot of people are thrilled about the whole “license plate as tracking device” angle"

confounded··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
After spending more time and money than on fancy keyboards than I'd like to admit, two of these side by side (an informal 'split' keyboard) is by far the easiest on my wrists and shoulder blades.
confounded··on Robinhood lays off 23% of staff
Because managers are evaluated on their ability to grow teams and increase their scope. Organizations intrinsically "want" to hire.

What's unusual about the last 20 years is that there's been so much available capital to fund tech companies doing just that.

confounded··on Show HN: Property Trends Scraped from Zillow
The question is, after this superb yak shaving, did you actually buy a house?

confounded··on Stripe Financial Connections
I got blocked as fraudulent and banned before I could even transfer my savings in to Betterment. (No problems with Wealthfront, and now a happyish customer).
confounded··on Automated Time Series Processing and Forecasting
If this is on the M5 data set as a benchmark, Prophet wouldn't be a great model choice at all. It's fantastic for dense, long, univariate time series with strong seasonality. M5 is very very sparse and intermittent. The M5 competition was won with lgbm, which isn't a time-series model at all. (Edit: looks like this defaults to something like lgbm, so, unsurprising results.)

confounded··on The Need to Remove Bad Management
But what if your company ultimately acts as a selfish individual, too? Perhaps it even has a fiduciary duty to do so?

There's a good argument that most venture backed software companies are exactly "a selfish and cynical bargain".

It's been a good few years since I've met a senior technical staffer at a 'successful' Bay company who genuinely thinks they're "making the world a better place".

EDIT: Not that I disagree with your broader point that selfishness is an undesirable characteristic for an individual, society or ideology. But it seems inappropriate to attribute the problem to ICs or their managers.

confounded··on R Markdown: The Definitive Guide
It's pretty easy to compile the documents; it's all just R functions (rmarkdown is a wrapper around knitr and pandoc). I've been writing Rmarkdown docs for many years in Emacs without hiccups (or without hiccups from rmarkdown::render, anyway).
confounded··on Google Threatens to Remove Search in Australia as Spat Escalates
TFA:

> But the Mountain View, California-based company has adapted to similar requests in other countries without cutting off search. Google stopped showing news results from European publishers on search results for French users last year after local regulators urged it to pay for content, and then on Thursday the firm said it reached a deal to pay media publishers in the country.

confounded··on UK government’s plans to regulate the internet are a threat to free speech
I’m strongly opposed to just about everything the UK government has done or proposed involving the internet, but the ‘Free Speech Union’ is an awful source to have on HN.

The FSU is entirely a product of the “culture wars” of the outrage manufacturing twitterati, and offers to protect members from “feminist professors”.

The UK’s Open Rights Group is the closest thing to a UK EFF (founded by Doctorow), and is generally a better source for policy like this.

Here’s their wiki page on the Online Harms Bill[1], and opinion on its policy impact[2].

Unfortunately in Britain, the BBC largely decides what people care about, or are even aware of.
