confidantlake··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
These are not my rules. I was responding to the person above me. It was he who was saying consciousness is responding to the environment. I too disagree with that definition. A thermometer or a NAND gate responds to its environment but I do not believe either is conscious.
confidantlake··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
I strongly disagree that llm's are conscious of their environment. Even an insect reacts to light and someone attempting to swat at it. An llm barely even receives input from its environment.
confidantlake··on Haunted by the ghosts of materialism
Why does it matter how you "should" act if there is no free will. You are just going to act how your are going to act.
confidantlake··on The Escalation of War in Ethiopia
Who decides who is corrupt? The dictator that rules the country? You? Every single dictatorships always accuses their political enemies of corruption.

A country with high levels of corruption cannot be trusted to fairly carry out capital punishment.

confidantlake··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price

confidantlake··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
Isn't recreational drug use way down (especially alcohol)? All the others are definitely not helping.
confidantlake··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
Jevon's paradox has to do with consuming resources, not employment. There are plenty of examples of fields getting more efficient and employment falling. Farming and manufacturing being 2 examples.
confidantlake··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
North Koreans haven't revolted in what, 3 generations? You would be surprised how bad shit can get and still no revolts.

confidantlake··on AI recursive self-improvement might not come so quickly after all
We have had nuclear weapons for less than a century. It takes one guy, one time for it to all go to shit. We are not out of the woods yet and we will never be.
confidantlake··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
Higher rates of obesity because we live longer?
confidantlake··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus

confidantlake··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
I am also shocked that every time an article about guitar playing is posted the sheer number of posters who play guitar themselves. I mean what are the chances?
confidantlake··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
If the models are down you are probably in the same situation as when aws is down. A collective shrug, everyone is down, no one will take the blame individually.
confidantlake··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
It is over for me before it even started.
confidantlake··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
Software wins because of the sales team and the network effects. You could already create a better twitter or facebook that no one would use long before llms.
confidantlake··on Don't be a meat proxy
We've investigated ourselves and decided we are absolutely essential. In fact we deserve a raise for safely guiding the company during these uncertain times.

confidantlake··on Agent swarms and the new model economics
Yes because it is akin to producing a universe of slop and trying to find the single atom of gold.
confidantlake··on China's open-weights AI strategy is winning
I think you are right. One small exception I can think of is Microsoft Office still crushes Libre Office.
confidantlake··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
My father's generation had much more leisure time than my generation. When he was out of the office at 5pm work stopped. There were no laptops, slack pings, etc, etc. Vacations were longer, pensions were a thing. You could get a job supporting a family right out of high school. Things have absolutely gotten worse in the west no matter how much you want to twist the stats.
confidantlake··on Sony deletes more movies from the accounts of people who ‘bought’ them
I'm sorry what? There isn't some super secret legal definition of every word. Buy means buy.
confidantlake··on Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration (2023)
Opened this thread expecting to see a bunch of anecedotal sleep tips. Did not disappoint.
confidantlake··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
Ah I always felt like novels were a partnership in a way. He is putting down words and I am using that to create a world in my mind. 2 people reading the same novel are creating 2 different worlds.
confidantlake··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
That is an entirely unserious graph.
confidantlake··on I Learned to Read Again
Try going for a walk when listening to an audiobook. When I do that I rarely zone out. When I don't I nearly always zone out.
confidantlake··on Under federal rule, colleges must leave grads better off or lose financial aid
Who trained the first philosopher?
confidantlake··on Under federal rule, colleges must leave grads better off or lose financial aid
If the purpose of college is not to get a job, then why do they give out degrees? Why do they give out loans?

Many colleges heavily advertise how it will help your career prospects. Yet when called out on the less than rosy outcomes they retreat to a position of oh it isn't about career at all.
