compuguy··on Bypass-paywalls-Firefox addon taken down by DMCA
Doesn't really matter. It's moved to a Russian Github clone, so YMMV: https://gitflic.ru/user/magnolia1234

compuguy··on 13ft – A site similar to 12ft.io but self-hosted
Yep it's on their Twitter account, and linked in multiple places on their GitHub repos....
compuguy··on 13ft – A site similar to 12ft.io but self-hosted
It moved to a Russian equivalent of GitHub or Gitlab (because of where its hosted, YMMV): https://gitflic.ru/project/magnolia1234/bpc_uploads
compuguy··on Bypass Paywall Chrome extension taken down by DMCA request on GitHub
Yes, same here. Forgot about the fact I forked the iamadamdev/bypass-paywalls-chrome at some point. Reading the notice, it looks like they are going after all forks and derivatives of this addon, including the "clean fork" here: https://github.com/bpc-clone. Also looks like they got rid of the filters list here: https://github.com/bpc-clone/bypass-paywalls-clean-filters

Update: looks like the clean fork is hosted here. https://gitflic.ru/project/magnolia1234/ (It's hosted in Russia, so YMMV).

compuguy··on 13ft – A site similar to 12ft.io but self-hosted
I agree. Though there is a counterpoint that a Russian host isn't going to respect a DMCA request. On the flipside it's a Russian replacement for Github that is based on Gogs, Gitea, or even Forgejo possibly. So yeah, YMMV.
compuguy··on 13ft – A site similar to 12ft.io but self-hosted
Yes, but it may be taken down via DMCA soon. See this DMCA request: https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2024/08/2024-08-0...

It mentions bpc_updates in the takedown request....

compuguy··on FireChat was a tool for revolution, then disappeared
So hypothetically the CIA benefited from an anonymous decentralized non-internet based chat app? I guess that's two things (protest movements and a intelligence agency) can agree on....
compuguy··on FireChat was a tool for revolution, then disappeared
You do know In-q-tel has invested in things that people use in the day to day, including Google Earth (originally created by Keyhole). DARPA kick-started the semi-autonomous vehicle industry with two of their Grand Challenges in the 2000s. The US Navy helped develop what would become Tor also in the early 2000s....
compuguy··on Phishing Campaigns Targeting USPS See as Much Web Traffic as the USPS Itself
No, as I and others have commented, this wasn't changed by the current Postmaster DeJoy (not ignoring all the other wonderful stuff he's changed). They've been using the dot com domain for decades at least?
compuguy··on Phishing Campaigns Targeting USPS See as Much Web Traffic as the USPS Itself
I'm honestly not a fan of what Louis DeJoy has done to USPS, but I'm pretty sure they've used the dot com domain for as long as I can remember, way before DeJoy became Postmaster General....

compuguy··on Tell HN: Bypass Paywalls repository is gone
Okay, for some reason they took down that one but the original (but not maintained) fork is gone. Fascinating...
compuguy··on SFMTA's train system running on floppy disks; city fears 'catastrophic failure'
Here in the Washington DC area, our metro still has two series of rolling stock that date back to 1982 and 1987 (2k and 3k series). At the earliest they won't start retiring them in 2024 and 2025 at the earliest...
compuguy··on SFMTA's train system running on floppy disks; city fears 'catastrophic failure'
Yeah, on further reflection, I recall my parents having a 286 with a hard drive. Still don't get why they couldn't find a 5.25" floppy. Then again both types of floppy drives are still quite obsolete....
compuguy··on SFMTA's train system running on floppy disks; city fears 'catastrophic failure'
I have this feeling that they meant 1988 instead of 1998....but I could be wrong?

Edit: Even the news article hints at 5 inch floppy disks...which makes 1998 make absolutely no sense to me at least.

compuguy··on GandiMail will cease being “free” on November 30 even for domains paid for years
Disappointing to hear. That was one of the distinctive features Gandi had. Otherwise other domain registrars are better alternatives based on price...
compuguy··on Show HN: Restfox – Open source lightweight alternative to Postman
This certainly looks promising, though the only thing I can see its missing that Postman does is allowing the use of domain specific certificate authentication and the use of a user provided certificate chain.
compuguy··on Patreon cuts deep inside creators’ pockets
Honestly the biggest issue with any crypto, at least in the United States, is for taxation purposes, it's treated like buying or selling a stock vs an actual currency. We need some actual crypto regulation defined that protects people and allows for cryptocurrencies to be used as an actual payment method, not an investment...
compuguy··on Patreon cuts deep inside creators’ pockets
And I really really want Ethereum to succeed so other cryptocurrencies move to non PoW systems. Good to hear we are getting close to it rolling out....
compuguy··on Patreon cuts deep inside creators’ pockets
Exactly. On top of that and the high transaction fees, it's more complicated to do a Patreon like service with Crypto than just work with the imperfect financial systems we have now....
compuguy··on Patreon cuts deep inside creators’ pockets
Yes though I would point out that smart contracts require some knowledge of coding knowledge to implement....
compuguy··on Andrew Ng: The suspension of H1B is bad for the US and bad for innovation
Last time I checked there is quite a lot of evidence pointing to him being a white supremacist: https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/13/politics/katie-mchugh-stephen...
compuguy··on Reddit started banning accounts that voted for content “against their policies”
You're not wrong about this. There is a very vocal right-wing population of commenters here on HN that show their true colors in more polarizing submissions.
