compcoffee··on Amazon Warehouse Workers Lose Bonuses, Stock Awards for Raises
>For real or according to anti-union propaganda?

For real. Unlike private sector unions, the people that the unions ares negotiating against are politicians, who have no real incentive to push back. "I'll grant your raises, you vote me back in, then I can grant more raises". The incentives are messed up.

compcoffee··on The Tyranny of the U.S. Dollar
You say that as if those currencies have no risk...

Provided you don't buy into the conspiracy theory that the US won't allow countries to price oil in other currencies, you have to ask why Iran doesn't do what you say. Perhaps it's because the dollar is bigger and more powerful than the political rhetoric that comes out of Washington.

compcoffee··on The Tyranny of the U.S. Dollar
>That new money is spent into the system and much of it takes the form of bank deposits which can then be inflated 10:1.

And the problem with this is?

Canada has no reserve requirement. The US value of reserves in the financial system is so high that banks are no longer reserve constrained.

The absolute quantity of money doesn't matter; the supply and demand for the currency does. That's why so many people got it wrong by claiming Quantitative Easing would result in massive inflation.

compcoffee··on The Tyranny of the U.S. Dollar
>The main way you get ripped off is when the monetary authority decides that inflation should be higher, and that devalues your money.

Inflation doesn't cause devaluation; it is devaluation. It's an increase in the exchange value of goods to cash.

And whether or not you get "ripped off" by inflation depends on what side of the trade you're on.

compcoffee··on Honda will use GM’s self-driving technology, invests in Cruise
>Will a Tesla (or any car) really prevent you from running your car into something if you try to?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "try to".

I drive a VW; if I'm inching out of a parking spot, it will automatically stop the car if it detects traffic. I suppose I could tromp on the gas at that moment and blast out into oncoming cars, but I'm not sure why I'd want to...

Same with catching up with slow moving traffic at highway speeds. It will detect the vehicle (or object) in front and apply the necessary braking pressure. The slower the object in front is moving, the faster it will apply harder pressure (and flash a warning to apply the brakes manually).

Essentially, if you don't react, the car will. You can then override it.

compcoffee··on “So the silence from Facebook over the weekend is.. deafening.”
>Like many other compromises, this one will be forgotten.

When people say, "It'll work this way in the future because it worked this way in the past" I tend to discredit them.

compcoffee··on Tesla delivered 83,500 vehicles in the third quarter, more than expected
>Don't forget the Supercharger network

Part of the VW "Dieselgate" settlement requires VW to invest $2BB in charger infrastructure.

Installing chargers is not rocket science, nor a huge advantage.

compcoffee··on Tesla delivered 83,500 vehicles in the third quarter, more than expected
>Reservations stand at about 400,000 I believe.

Based on? There's been no official release. If they stood at 400k, Musk would be shouting it from the rooftops.

Many reservations were expecting a $35k car (with a substantial rebate). Even Musk himself said the demand for $50k+ sedans is ~100k annually.

compcoffee··on “I'm surrounded by people - but I feel so lonely”
>Why do we suddenly get very inward-looking in our 30s when it comes to forming new friendships

This is typically the time when you or those in your age cohort are focusing on their families. Time is at a premium.

compcoffee··on Elon Musk Settles SEC Fraud Charges
>There were zero consequences.

Excuse me? Fuld was canned and his equity was wiped out. In what way was Musk "crucified"? Seems to me he got off easy.

compcoffee··on Elon Musk Settles SEC Fraud Charges
Elizabeth Holmes also settled with the SEC, for what it's worth. DoJ investigation ongoing...
compcoffee··on Tesla big battery defies skeptics
>Does Panasonic hold the patent and Tesla makes them in the giga factory?

I believe Panasonic also owns the GF1 equipment, while Tesla owns the building and leases the space to Panasonic.

compcoffee··on Tesla big battery defies skeptics
The Tesla Positive Spin PR Patrol is in hyperdrive.

If the CEO of any company outside of Silicon Valley was being charged with securities fraud, this place would be calling for heads.

compcoffee··on Tesla big battery defies skeptics
>If you told me in 2008 that we'd have mass market electric car

A tiny fraction of global auto sales for sedans worth $50k+ are a long way from "mass market", not to speak of the fact that more than 300,000 Nissan Leafs have been sold globally.

compcoffee··on Tesla’s Musk pulled the plug on a settlement with the SEC at the last minute
>TL;DR I want Captain Ahab at the helm, chasing his White Whale, swinging for the fences.

I want people with the integrity not to commit securities fraud.

compcoffee··on Tesla’s Musk pulled the plug on a settlement with the SEC at the last minute
>Kick out the visionary who has started three billion-dollar companies

So the fact that he may be a fraudster is irrelevant to you?

By the way, he didn't start Paypal or Tesla.

compcoffee··on Tesla’s Musk pulled the plug on a settlement with the SEC at the last minute
>Funding was secured in the sense that the potential buyer had the funds.

If you're blind to this whole story, I suppose you could believe that. Who was the "potential buyer"? We heard VW and the Saudi fund, both who said it was nonsense.

Beyond that, according to the complaint, nothing was discussed with the board and there was no possibility that small shareholders could remain (or institutional investors for that matter) if Tesla went private. There was no discussed price. Musk wanted to "burn the shorts"; he was trying to do so for months. Whoops.

And have you considered that this is only just beginning? I mean, it's not impossible that this blows over, but it's also possible -- with a DOJ investigation ongoing-- that this whole thing implodes. The world is tiring of the games Silicon Valley plays.

compcoffee··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
Every transaction has a buyer and a seller.

Shorting is selling? Selling to whom? Ah, right, a buyer.

Telsa share price has risen through extreme short interest for years. How?

compcoffee··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
>I wonder if they will be able to demonstrate that any damage was actually done.

This case is unique in that both shorts and longs were harmed. Plenty to go around. How many people bought shares at ~$350 assuming they'd be private at $420 because the CEO said so?

compcoffee··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
>The shorts are mainly trying to kill Tesla and coming from the oil, gas, other auto companies most of all.

What about when Elon was spreading rumours that the Saudi's wanted to take Tesla private?

compcoffee··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
>Musk meanwhile had been focusing on SpaceX and laying the foundation for the first Mars colonization.

I'll bet SpaceX management is dreading the idea of Musk showing up there every day to work.

compcoffee··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
>If the price dips too low, it's potentially catastrophic for the company and him.

Shorting a stock doesn't magically make its price drop.

compcoffee··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
>The Century of the Self: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ3RzGoQC4s

I think all of Adam Curtis' documentaries are worth a watch:

compcoffee··on Linus Torvalds: 'I'll never be cuddly but I can be more polite'
>cis-white-hetero-male in US/EUR) are inherently treated worse, either consciously or unconsciously (bias)

This is hard for me to wrap my head around, because in almost any social or work environment I've ever been in, cis-white-hetero-males make up a small subset of the population.

compcoffee··on Instagram’s Co-Founders Said to Step Down from Company
>I've seen plenty of engaging and cool content. I've even become friends with people from the opposite side of the world. Basically a modern kind of pen pal.

I did that before with Facebook, and Twitter, and forums, and WoW, and MSN, and ICQ and IRC and MUDs...literally any form of online interaction. This doesn't set Instagram apart; it happens despite the fact it's a hyper-optimized advertising app.

compcoffee··on SiriusXM to Acquire Pandora
>Radio that you never lose reception with

And sadly this isn't even the case. I recently purchased a new car that came with the SiriusXM 3-month trial. We drop reception in the country and in town (among tall buildings). In fact, it drops more often than mobile internet (why doesn't XM have 10s buffer?).

The subscription is also more expensive than Apple Music or Google Play Music and the car comes with Android Auto and CarPlay. How they expect to compete is beyond me. I guess that's why they bought Pandora.

compcoffee··on People Like You More Than You Know
>Women giving men compliments is, for the most part, interpreted as a come-on. It's not fair

Umm..I'm pretty sure men complementing women have it a lot worse.

compcoffee··on People Like You More Than You Know
>"Short men do this a lot and make it impossible to say "Eh, your height doesn't bother me, but I like X about you."

Men who see themselves as ugly do this."

Wait, you think telling someone, "Don't worry, your ugliness doesn't bother me. After all, you're friendly!" is a reasonable thing to say someone?

That's the exact opposite of making X trait a non-issue.
