comodore_··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
> Just like we don't have Asianas and Asianos, and we can simply say Asians.

south americans.

your comment is the embodiment of the hola, my Latinx friends meme.

comodore_··on Joe Rogan, confined to Spotify, is losing influence
on top of that they highlight repeat guests which makes no sense. and the fact that they highlight them specifically is very fishy.
comodore_··on Joe Rogan, confined to Spotify, is losing influence
Life in the big city.
comodore_··on Joe Rogan, confined to Spotify, is losing influence
these seem like very flawed metrics to say the least. but then for twitter journos, twitter is everything.
comodore_··on Experience: I spent 29 years in solitary confinement (2010)
> We cannot let prisons continue being factories for drug addicts and career criminals

or literal factories. prison labor is not always forced, but always cheap labor and some of it even dangerous. imagine getting paid 2$ a day to fight CA's wildfires

comodore_··on Square to acquire Afterpay for $29B
I watch this every 6 months or so https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTUY16CkS-k
comodore_··on Clubhouse opens its doors to everyone, is anyone rushing to get in?
I only joined clubhouse to join Tim Dillon's rooms such as "should women allowed to own bitcoin" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clTehN8Xnuc
comodore_··on Bezos and Branson not yet astronauts, US says
the term "astronaut" is not tied to universal characteristics such as having been to earth's orbit. instead, the term was introduced by NASA and is explicitly reserved for crew members of NASA space programs who have been to orbit or beyond. therefore there are also no soviet astronauts
comodore_··on Bezos and Branson not yet astronauts, US says
this is true, they were in space for just as long.
comodore_··on Ask HN: How are salaries for senior devs in Berlin at the moment?
that sounds about right. but if you're not married, you're more likely to get to ~3,800€ a month after taxes and social security contributions, which comes in at ~42% combined.
comodore_··on iMessage, Apple Music used by NSO Pegasus to attack journalist iPhones
there are apparently 50k names in that list, last I've checked they confirmed ~180 journalists are among them. spying on journalists is atrocious, but who are the other 49.800?
comodore_··on Warp: Fast, Rust-based terminal (waiting list)
I expected this to be related to https://github.com/seanmonstar/warp

the typo did not help

comodore_··on Indian state proposes two-child policy, stringent measures for violators
who pays for all the old people?
comodore_··on Indian state proposes two-child policy, stringent measures for violators
incentivizing sterilisations seems like a slippery slope for a democracy.

next step is having more than 2 kids will wreck your credit score and this kid will be denied higher education. this is some text book china shit.

comodore_··on I Tricked Myself into Liking Running
I'm approaching ~100 days of running. after ~2 weeks it quickly became a habit, so much so that during the two days I could not run (vaccine), I felt a constant itch to do so.

started with 4k everyday at a 7min pace, now it's down to 5:30 and I do 8k everyday and 10-15k on weekends. Usually I do this in between coding sessions and use my run to listen to some podcast and/or think about a current issue. never been more productive while also feeling much more healthy.

comodore_··on Copilot regurgitating Quake code, including sweary comments
funny, the youtube algo blessed me with an in dept video (~1y old) about this quake function yesterday.
comodore_··on Supreme Court sides with high school cheerleader who cursed online
they raked in hundreds of millions from trump resistance libs over the last couple years, yet their number of lawyers that specialize in free speech is the same as a decade ago: 4! four.
comodore_··on Supreme Court sides with high school cheerleader who cursed online
on a side note, it is becoming a rare occasion that the ACLU is involved in a free speech issue and arguing for free speech, and they are using it to sell merch.
comodore_··on Reality Winner, NSA contractor in leak case, out of prison
he had no part in the reality winner debacle, as did laura poitras who eventually did get fired of it
comodore_··on Reality Winner, NSA contractor in leak case, out of prison
thanks, I think the headline can be misleading, he ignored his mails that contained a guide to set encryption and not ignored setting up encryption out of carelessness and exchanged sensitive stuff.
comodore_··on Reality Winner, NSA contractor in leak case, out of prison
this is a very long and weird sentence and I don't really understand what you're getting at
comodore_··on Reality Winner, NSA contractor in leak case, out of prison
As of today, the intercept still has not provided any public accounting of their screw up.
comodore_··on Solana Labs completes a $314M private token sale led by Andreessen Horowitz
The hardware requirements wrt memory to run a validator node are just insane https://docs.solana.com/running-validator/validator-reqs
comodore_··on “YouTube is shutting down dissenting Biology PhDs and MDs”
Seems like you missed the point entirely.

Who determines what "dangerous medical misinformation" is?

As shown, today's "debunked conspiracy theory" can be deemed credible next year.

big tech colluding with gov entities to punish dissenting views seems like a very bad idea.

comodore_··on The Telegram Billionaire and His Dark Empire
> Telegram, arguably the world’s most dangerous messenger service.

yet again, unfettered conversations, very frighting for traditional media outlets.

It's rather telling that spiegel chose this particular topic for its international section just days after the german Bundestag approved further public surveillance measures. With this new law federal police and all 19 intelligence services in Germany will be allowed to hack into suspects' computers and smartphones. And also the Snowden revelations just had their anniversary today. spiegel: crickets

comodore_··on How California Homelessness Became a Crisis
Doesn't that put a label on temporarily homeless people, like people with experience in homelessness, which they can't get rid off. Being homeless ends the second you're not homeless anymore.

the term "unhoused" suffers from the same thing, it's just not precise.

comodore_··on How California Homelessness Became a Crisis
I disagree with these kinds of reframing attempts for a couple of reasons but most of all i dislike this trend of constantly convoluting everything with "identity". Being homeless describes the state a person is in, not who they are, even though some people chose to be homeless.
comodore_··on How California Homelessness Became a Crisis
When was "experiencing homelessness" term established as the norm? what's wrong with just "homeless"?
comodore_··on Our digital pasts weren’t supposed to be weaponized like this
Are the journos finally feeling the heat themselves?

journos are one of the worst offenders in this toxic climate.

Weaponizing tweets only loses its power in only two ways, either by every reasonable person and institution realizing that this is stupid, or by mutual assured destruction.

Unfortunately I think we're well past the point of no return, so I'm looking forward to the latter. So let the cancelations continue until moral improves.

comodore_··on NFT’s aren’t a harmless digital fad – they’re a disaster for our planet
The subheading of the article is the only time "fossil fuel" is mentioned, not a single mention after that

>Artists are harnessing NFTs to sell their work but ignoring the vast amount of fossil fuels needed to power them.

this article is FUD

> [...] while the rest of us are saddled with an environmental impact nobody can afford to bear. One can’t help but wonder if the proud new owner of Western Flag will think it was all worth it on some day, not so very far from now, when the coastal cities have drowned, the brackish water that comes from the tap needs to be boiled before it is safe to drink and climate refugees huddle in tent cities stretching to the horizon.
