commiebob··on Google, Gmail experiencing downtime worldwide
"We will provide an update by September 1, 2009 5:16:00"

Hit refresh at 5:16 and it's back up. That was pretty impressive.

commiebob··on What We Know About Evan Ratliff, So Far
Part of the game is that he has to continue using Facebook, Flickr, his cell phone, etc.

Otherwise, he would just go sit in the woods for a month and it wouldn't be much of a game.

commiebob··on LangId Tells You The Language of Your Text
Would be even nicer if it provided a link to translate or just showed a translation as well.

commiebob··on rel="shortlink" - URL shortening that doesn't hurt the internet
I understand that it's not a huge deal, but that's not really the point. Do we really need to update every page on the internet with a short url? Just in case it gets linked on twitter or a shorter version is needed for some reason?

It just seems a little ridiculous to me.

commiebob··on rel="shortlink" - URL shortening that doesn't hurt the internet
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I read this is on any page I own I would have to define a short url for it in the head section of the html.

So with this standard no one could short link to a site I control without me going through and making up a short link for every page.

In addition to that, this standard assumes that your url is somewhat short and not something like "thelongesturlintheworld.com" in which case it wouldn't help at all.

Twitter needs to just make it's own URL shortening service and put an end to all this.

commiebob··on Ask HN: I want to build/learn something this weekend - suggestions?
I signed up for an app engine account when it first came out and I haven't touched it, so I think this is what I'm going to do. Thanks for the info and links!

Everyone else that replied thank you as well, some stuff that I will file away for next time. :-)

commiebob··on A Lesson In Timing Attacks (or, Don't use MessageDigest.isEquals)
What if you did something like (using the example from the article) A value which shares no bytes in common with the secret digest will return immediately; a value which shares the first 15 bytes will return 15 compares later.

You keep track of the time while doing the comparison, then before spitting back the result you feed the amount of time to a separate function that will sleep (or whatever) a certain amount of predetermined time so that all results process in the same time.

I realize this is a bit excessive, and will slow down your code quite a bit, but if you are really that worried about this type of attack, why not?

commiebob··on Stunning Examples of Data Visualization
these are very pretty charts and graphs but none of them seem to actually convey the intended information very well.
commiebob··on Forget Starbucks, work at the library instead
how is that any different than in a busy coffee shop?
commiebob··on Review: Vibram Five Fingers Classic
Amazing shoes, however I would recommend buying either the sprint or the KSO if you will be doing any running in them, the addition of a strap across the top of your foot helps a lot with keeping them on well when running.
commiebob··on Ask HN: Unshortening links
I saw this post and decided to throw something together

http://slice.20oz.net/

It will lengthen your URL and create a short url at tinyurl, bit.ly, and is.gd for you.

So if you have some tr.im links to convert over you can just plug them into here.

commiebob··on Can you trust Paul Graham with your password?
Seriously, enough with these threads already. The passwords aren't encrypted, he cries about it, they are encrypted, he cries about it. It's a news site, we're not controlling access to nuclear weapons here.
