commanderkeen08··on How to Get a Job as a Developer in Less Than Six Months
Just a heads up, that fixed position element makes for a verrry annoying mobile experience, especially when someone taps to zoom in. This is probably the most common source of my frustration with the mobile web--those annoying social share sidebars that are position-fixed are the primary perpetrators.

I noticed you're using onswipe though which helps, but if someone is using some third party Hacker News reader, onswipe won't load.

Having derailed this thread enough, I love everything about this. Ill never get enough of hearing people's success stories.

What I learned: "Cheddar has shirts!"

I'll give it to them that, for the first 2 seconds, I was starting to get very curious. After 3 seconds, I was gone.

commanderkeen08··on Show HN: HackerNews reimagined without tables or center elements.
Google "Responsive Web Design." you shouldn't have to pinch your zoom your way into every website. HN has a poor mobile experience.

Shoulda used Codepen.io ;-0
commanderkeen08··on Everyday.me (YC S12) - an "Evernote for Your Life"
Agreed. I love the Feltron Reports and the stuff Wolfram Alpha does with his own personal data, but I can't really get down with this. ThinkUp (for social media) and Day One / Daytum (for personal data) is all I need. You can't really reproduce Feltron Reports on scale.
commanderkeen08··on The CEO of my company is a micro manager - how to make it stop?
The easiest, most general answer is: data. Give him a pie chart with numbers and dollar signs. How much time is he spending on micro-managing? Calculate it. The little things start to add up. Time spent micro-managing is time not spent doing other things (growing the business).

Honestly, Merlin's meta commentary on the rest of the 5by5 network is what kills me, every time. I almost crashed on my way to work during the "King Marco" episode.
commanderkeen08··on Codecademy redesign
Lookin lot like Treehouse bro
commanderkeen08··on The origins of the blink HTML element
Don't forget the "tables" used for layout.

Oh wait, my bank still does this. Oh wait, so does Yale University.

commanderkeen08··on Codecademy - how not to do a redesign
"Codecademy is about learning and teaching so something along the lines of What do you want to learn? would be more appropriate here."

you mean exactly what Treehouse asks?

commanderkeen08··on Why it's OK to leave a tech job at 5 p.m.
Asked myself the same question. 95% of the "article" is a quote from Sheryl Sandberg's interview.
commanderkeen08··on Why I decided to skip college, and how I've fared (10 months later)
GREAT decision. I just recently graduated with a BA in English. I loved it, but it was ultimately a waste of time. My biggest qualm with higher education is that there's not enough DOING encouraged.

Having said that, two months after graduated in English, I taught myself web development and UI and now work at an SEO agency.

commanderkeen08··on How to get a really free blog
Nah
commanderkeen08··on Why Bands Need Better Mobile Websites
"Can't exchange email address for free content" Really? People are complaining about this? Also 1/3 of sites being in Flash is hilarious and true. Overall, I think the premise is flawed. People at SXSW aren't going to be trying to exchange their email address for free content when they hear a new band. They will probably fire up their Soundcloud/Twitter/Facebook app and follow them or like them.
commanderkeen08··on Learning from 20 years of personal analytics
When I was reading James W. Pennebaker's "The Secret Life of Pronouns," I started consciously collecting as much personal data as I could for this exact reason. I'm 23 and I've got most of everything I've ever done on a computer since I was around 14 logged. I started thinking about the amazing insights that all of this data can reveal to me in the future. Every IM conversation, email, blog entry, text message, tweet everything I've liked on Facebook. I can only imagine in 20 years, having a psychiatrist ask me what my childhood was like and being able to show them a piechart of how many times I complained about something to someone.

commanderkeen08··on What I don't know about building webapps
I hope you keep up with this
commanderkeen08··on I have an idea for an iPad app...constructive criticism needed
Please please please realize that it is highly unlikely that you will make any money off of this app, no matter how great the idea is.

It could be the next Flipboard and be an app that I could end up using daily and you still probably wouldn't make even on your investment.
