combyn8tor··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
I remember in the Windows 95/98 days asking my friend for his IP address and then browsing through my windows explorer to his mum's fully shared windows C drive. She had her computer plugged directly into the modem and was using ICS to share the net to my friends computer.

I sent them a screenshot of her shared drive through ICQ, and not long after she bought a router.

combyn8tor··on Vomit: Clean up Claude 5's token output with a separate LLM
not that crazy. Opus 5 is like working with an insufferable, arrogant colleague that speaks another language. It's mentally draining dealing with someone like that for 8 hours a day. I'm back on 4.8, and it feels like working with a friendly colleague again. Life's too short to work with Opus 5 every day :-)
combyn8tor··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
I haven't had time to complain on here because I spend all my time trying to work out wtf Opus 5 is talking about and googling words I've never seen or heard in 40 years as a native English speaker.
combyn8tor··on Qwen3.8 Max now ranked as the best overall model by agentic index
It works fine for me. Only issue I have is that it has me constantly reaching for the dictionary.

You may want to consider the incomes of developers outside the US, students, unemployed. $200/month is a lot to a lot of people.
combyn8tor··on Cloudflare Drop
Well according to the people in this thread it was previously impossible for bad actors to host a website, and CloudFlare has now given them this unique ability.

> VPNs do not allow you to connect two devices directly, they have to go through the VPN

Not true. Depends on the VPN protocol.

combyn8tor··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
Rust kernel development.
combyn8tor··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
I think that holds true for any industry where the consequences of failure are no more than loss of money.
combyn8tor··on Domain expertise has always been the real moat
> risk appetite, motivation, grit, and patience.

This is the moat. It was before AI and still is.

combyn8tor··on Thoughts on People and Blogs
Maybe I'm missing something, but it appears he is irritated that people aren't giving him their time? Why does he have that expectation?
combyn8tor··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
Go and Rust is not really a type of work though. What tasks are you throwing at them?
combyn8tor··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
Same experience for me. I think people need to start providing context for the type of work they're doing when repeating the local model hype. Maybe they're working with a cookie cutter React app and it does the job fine.

They seem to have stopped developing GPUI (or maybe just the public version)?

One of the staff forked it into a community edition https://github.com/gpui-ce/gpui-ce

Does anyone have more details about the state of it?

combyn8tor··on Year of the IPv6 Overlay Network
What is a wsl mirrored network?
combyn8tor··on Claude Code Routines
In my experience Opus and Claude have declined significantly over the past few weeks. It actually feels like dealing with an employee that has become bored and intentionally cuts corners.
combyn8tor··on Our commitment to Windows quality
I had to check the date on my phone as I was sure it was an April fools joke. After the absolute onslaught of negative feedback and the new term "Microslop", they put out an article saying you can now adjust the position of the taskbar. Unreal.
combyn8tor··on The wild six weeks for NanoClaw's creator that led to a deal with Docker
"In researching a hiccup with performance, he stumbled across a file where the OpenClaw agent had downloaded all of his WhatsApp messages and stored them in plain, unencrypted text on his computer. Not just the work-related messages it was given explicit access to, but all of them, his personal messages too."

Now the agent can do the same thing, but it's in a container and it's doing it with a Rust binary, so you know it's safe. /s

Edit: It's not Rust.

combyn8tor··on Why is Claude an Electron app?
The process is called "webview2" on windows. From memory my Tauri app process is about 6mb memory and the webview2 is about 100mb.
combyn8tor··on Ex-GitHub CEO launches a new developer platform for AI agents
> I don’t see how the average engineer has the energy or motivation to even understand these tools, never mind meaningfully compare them

This is why I use the copilot extension in VS code. They seem to just copy whatever useful thing climbs to the surface of the AI tool slop pile. Last week I loaded up and Opus 4.6 was there ready to use. Yesterday I found it has a new Claude tool built in which I used to do some refactoring... it worked fine. It's like having an AI tool curator.

combyn8tor··on Privacy doesn't mean anything anymore, anonymity does
How do you accept crypto payments? Is there a Stripe style service that provides an API and/or payment portal? Id like to implement something for my SaaS but generally can't be bothered with crypto.
combyn8tor··on We pwned X, Vercel, Cursor, and Discord through a supply-chain attack
I have three OS installs. Windows install for games. Another Windows for development (I have to for windows dev). And a Ubuntu install for anything not games/work. The windows drives use bitlocker and they can't access each other's files. It's not perfect.

Although with the amount of crap I have to install for windows development I'm starting to wonder if a base VM image that is used as a start point for each project would be cleaner.

Curious how you manage licensing?
combyn8tor··on Hard Rust requirements from May onward
Wow that was an interesting read. I find it amusing that nobody seems to really know who he is or what his motives are, yet his code is run on millions of machines every day.
combyn8tor··on Hard Rust requirements from May onward
I just import them with unique names if there is a collision - Wiz_Baz and Foo_Baz
combyn8tor··on John Carmack on mutable variables
I did this accidentally the other day in Rust:

let x = some_function();

... A bunch of code

let x = some_function();

The values of x are the same. It was just an oversight on my part but wondered if I could set my linter to highlight multiple uses of the same variable name in the same function. Does anyone have any suggestions?

combyn8tor··on What happened to Apple's legendary attention to detail?
They present as bugs. I suspect they don't have the A team working on mechanisms that help reduce the amount of time kids spend on their devices. Do the bare minimum to show they "care" but no more as it hurts the profits.
combyn8tor··on What happened to Apple's legendary attention to detail?
"you're essentially stepping into the role of an enterprise MDM IT department, auditing software updates for stability before letting them go out."

If my daughter's Spotify app breaks after an update she knows to immediately contact my on-call pager and alert our family CEO and legal department.

Just give me a checkbox that allows updates.

If an app developer changes something fundamental about the app, then the changes will be subject to the app store age guidelines. If the app is recategorised to 18+ it won't be able to install anyway. Billions of devices around the world have auto app updates turned on. The risk of a rogue update is outweighed by the benefit of getting instant access to security updates. I'm managing a kids iPad with a couple of mainstream games and school apps installed, not running a fortune 500.
