comboy··on Backblaze Drive Stats for 2024
Huh, what happened to HGST?
comboy··on Hedge Funds Are Pocketing Much of Their Clients' Gains with 'No Limit' Fees
It's kind of like buying lottery tickets from a vendor and when you win, but he steals the winnings, you switch to another one.

Except, also, you don't actually ever see the tickets.

comboy··on Mitochondria as you've never seen them
Cell diagrams are simplifications. Cells are not like your room with a few things inside. They are more like a decent city. In human cells you have hundreds to thousands of mitochondria.
comboy··on Mitochondria as you've never seen them
They don't kind of look like bacteria, there was a lot of gene sequencing and careful examination because it seemed like a very wild theory especially before we've really learned archaea. Quammen's "The Tangled Tree" has a nice writeup on on the process.
comboy··on Doorbell camera catches rare footage of meteorite striking home's front walkway
It's not even clear that total amount of people who lived in prehistory is higher than amount of people currently alive today.

comboy··on Google Fiber is coming to Las Vegas
If you can bring that to kiosk and you live close enough to drive there, the problem is already solved. Even a radio bridge could do.
comboy··on Playful Drawings That Charles Darwin's Children Left on His Manuscripts
Is it not? My kids with all technology and toys they have access to still often choose drawing. And it's not like their main thing or something they strive to get better at. It's just fun.

So definitely no reason to be sad, it is still a great source of entertainment (and not only for the kids)

comboy··on Narcolepsy is weird but I didn't notice
I have some books that I use as melatonin.
comboy··on Snake Game in 56 Bytes
This is ridiculous. So many clever tricks.
comboy··on Walter Isaacson: My So-Called Writing Life (2014)
Did you actually read the book? And his other biographies? If yes then please explain what in your opinion makes it a puff piece.
comboy··on Making AMD GPUs competitive for LLM inference (2023)
I think there is some money to be made in machine learning too.
comboy··on MacKenzie Scott donates over $2B in 2024 to 199 organizations
What a trainwreck of a comment section.

It's great to see such philanthropy. I would love to see more documentation on process of choosing like e.g. Givewell does. Presumably non-trivial amount went into researching how to optimally allocate the money and some lessons from that could be useful to others.

comboy··on We use our own hardware at Fastmail
Yeah, that makes me feel uneasy as a long time fastmail user.
comboy··on Apple collaborates with Nvidia to research faster LLM performance
patents?
comboy··on Ask HN: How to Resurrect a Site from Archive.org?

  wget --mirror --convert-links --page-requisites --no-parent URL
But yeah it's also not clear to me regarding copyrights and such.
comboy··on OpenAI Email Archives
I feel like this did not get as much HN visibility as it should…
comboy··on Engineering Sleep
Have tried/responded to modafinil? It's supposed to also impact orexin pathways.
comboy··on List of books that will induce a mindfuck
Read them all and highly recommend them, but to be clear, these are not mindfucks, It's just well written entertainment, nothing ambitious.
comboy··on List of books that will induce a mindfuck
Uh, I'd love some recommendations fitting the title, but many of those on the list are definitely not that.
comboy··on Cybertruck's Many Recalls
Why there is always so much fuss about labels? Across so many different domains. Cars needed OTA update to be driven safely. Why is it important whether we call it a recall or not?

I am not trying to make a point here. Clearly some people care about that. I'm legitimately curious why.

comboy··on 'Thirsty' ChatGPT uses four times more water than previously thought
Not sure if that' more than a person sitting in the office writing this when you take into account all electricity used by the building, maintenance, other people (catering cleaning etc.)

And I think this energy-shaming whether that's AI crypto or something else is just a wrong approach. If somebody buys energy he can use it for mindless entertainment if he so pleases, why focus on datacenters and not Disneyland?

comboy··on Using Erlang hot code updates
I don't think updating files is the problem. The biggest issue with hot code updates seems to be that they can create states that cannot be replicated in either release on its own.
comboy··on El Capitan: New supercomputer is the fastest
I'd guess it's unlikely to be the real use case. The real one is classified. Plus it's not like more deadly nuclear weapons would change anything, we can do bad enough with what we already have.
comboy··on James Gleick's Chaos: The Software
Any books on the same topic that anybody can recommend? I've tried a few and was mostly disappointed. I'd like something diving deeper than Gleick.
comboy··on AI makes tech debt more expensive
Same experience, but I think it's going to change. As models get better, their context window keeps growing while mine stays the same.

To be clear, our context window can be really huge if you are living the project. But not if you are new to it or even getting back to it after a few years.

comboy··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
My kind of people. Good luck!
comboy··on I fixed a server with a precisely placed piece of tape (2023)
I would guess the opposite. Less energy pumped into the fans running at 100%.
comboy··on Perceptually lossless (talking head) video compression at 22kbit/s
These are always fun

comboy··on Apple's M4 Max chip is the fastest single-core performer in consumer computing
> back to at least 2010's Apple A4

basically Jim Keller happened, I think they are still riding on that architecture

comboy··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
Logic is stellar. Why would you feel like its being abandoned? Professional tools don't change UX every 2 years.
