colourgarden··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life
It's been a few years since I read it but one of the early topics in How To Win Friends And Influence People is on a similar track to this:

You can't make people do something. They have to want to do it (unless you're the big boss ruling through fear).

I've found it's much more productive to present information or an argument so that the other party is not made to feel stupid and is willing to accept it.

colourgarden··on Facebook says it has removed promotion of anti-quarantine events
> The idea you can simply shut down the economy at will and balance it with relief doesn't make economic sense.

Of course it doesn't. Governments all over the world aren't making decisions for the benefit of the economy right now, they're doing it to save the lives of their citizens.

colourgarden··on Kick the Shit Out of Procrastination
Yawn. When I read such low-effort comments, I wonder if the people writing them ever read the article or if their job is just to spout off uninformed opinions.
colourgarden··on The Berkshire Hathaway Site is a master class in human-centered design
Somewhat related - the CSS Working Group maintains a list of design mistakes they and their predecessors made.

colourgarden··on N26 will be leaving the UK
Norton went bankrupt. N26 are choosing not to operate in the UK any longer.
colourgarden··on Magic Roundabout (Swindon)
My favourite part of the entry is that it lead me to the discovery of the UK Roundabout Appreciation Society. Never change Britain.

colourgarden··on What's the longest distance that can be traveled by using free transportation?
> The transport must run regularly, not just as a one-off event.
colourgarden··on Apple may have to abandon Lightning connector cable
That's not strictly true, unfortunately. Court cases have been brought and won against companies who do not acquire explicit consent from their users when storing information in cookies.

Companies then build solutions in reaction to these cases. The law is the ass.

colourgarden··on Visa Buys Plaid
Note that a SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN is shown when trying to access tink.com at the moment. Says the certificate is only valid for cloudfront.net.

Edit: the website itself also returns a 403.

colourgarden··on How tracking pixels work
My immediate reaction to your comment was "How do you not know that?!" (I'm sorry.)

However, if people frequenting a tech forum are not aware of the privacy benefits that Firefox has been pushing for a long time now, we as "tech folk" have a responsibility to push out the message.

So you can find out more about Firefox tracking here - https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2019/09/03/todays-firefox-bloc...

And the Firefox Facebook Container may also be of interest - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/facebookcontainer/

Hopefully, you're now reading replies to your initial comment in Firefox!

colourgarden··on Sweden Drops Julian Assange Rape Investigation
Do you have a source to disprove or challenge the UN's definition of torture?

Solitary confinement is often used during war. That Assange is incarcerated in a civilian prison doesn't necessarily diminish or change the effectiveness and impact.

colourgarden··on Ask HN: How many of you have been impacted by a layoff?
FYI the “we save you money” link on the homepage leads to a 404 - https://prospect.org.uk/about/well-save-you-money/
colourgarden··on Kevinism
"Kevin is not a name but a diagnosis" is a well known saying amongst school teachers here in Germany.
colourgarden··on The Unlikely Return of Birkenstock
> I have a bit of a flat foot but otherwise no pain at all. Should i keep wearing them for health's sake? Will my feet eventually adapt to them and stop hurting?

Also experienced this (also flat footed) but the pain passed after a couple of days - stick it out.

The great thing about Birkenstocks are the versatility. Good for walking long distances in the city; light hiking in the countryside or getting your feet wet at the beach.

colourgarden··on Pills: A simple responsive CSS grid for humans
Whilst 'three' is better than 'col-3', it's still based on a 12-column way of thinking. Try Avalanche (https://github.com/colourgarden/avalanche) for a grid system based on percentages or fractions (you choose) </plug>
