collegeburner··on NAT still exists for IPv6
do you have to "learn, document, configure, and patch" a firewall on ur home router? most ppl just plug it in bc it's configured to work.
collegeburner··on NAT still exists for IPv6
hot take of the day: NAT is (mostly) a shitty idea. we can give everything a WAN ipv6 and a private LAN address. devices should maintain their own firewalls and if defense in depth is required, the router should maintain a firewall that blocks incoming by default but still give everything its own address.
collegeburner··on More energy on less land: The drive to shrink solar’s footprint
the sight and sound impact of a wind turbine is real though newer models are a lot quieter. if i lived out in the country where it was quiet i'd be against someone putting them up super close as well.

just calling everyone a "NIMBY" is not a valid response to criticism of externalities.

collegeburner··on Milwaukee Tool Raises the Bar with New USA Factory
problem is in theory it's "the same quality" but with the amount of shitty chinesium i seen i'm not convinced they're capable of producing anything more than a disposable.
collegeburner··on Milwaukee Tool Raises the Bar with New USA Factory
yea i've seen the attitude extend to college here, we generally have some idea that cheating is wrong but most of the chinese students i met seemed to think it was fine if they could get away with it.

second the project farm recommendation btw. he's 100% the best source of trustworthy reviews with credible methods for tools i found, i check him every time i need a good tool.

collegeburner··on Ask HN: Do we need another build system?
is this just a submarine ad for BUSY? lowkey seems like it. anyway i feel like a user friendly layer on bazel might be a good solution to a lot of problems, maybe along with a port to a compiled language so no JVM dependency.

homie ipsec is a trashfire, you couldn't pay me enough to go back to that shit.
collegeburner··on The Case for Degrowth
i think america is uniquely well suited to accept immigrants bc that's how we got made. one of the biggest things i learned talking to friends i made from outside our country is we don't even realize how much more diverse and accepting we are. like we've obviously got room to grow but looking at how europe is doing after letting in some immigrants is kinda startling.
collegeburner··on The Case for Degrowth
i dont think the cause of housing shortage is billionaires with their 3 vacation homes. there's just not enough of them to make a difference.
collegeburner··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
aaaand thank goodness i'm on an american server host or else i'd probably be getting the same rn.
collegeburner··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
one of the upsides to living in texas, lots of cheap wind power lol. even with more expensive electricity i can still run old hardware for cheap. means less e waste also.
collegeburner··on Retirement of Amazon MOBI eBook file format
i got my kindle for way under half that price. jailbroke it and now i can do whatever i want. so the value prop is cheap ass hardware subsidized by daddy bezos.
collegeburner··on Terminal Latency (2017)
semi related but anybody know how i fix the powershell latency on windows? it's literally unusable as a shell besides running scripts.

collegeburner··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
i have taken 15 year old ipecac after eating something i shouldnt have and can assure you it remained 100% effective.
collegeburner··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
i honestly hate when everybody's answer to inflation is "just make a budget lol". i haven't used one historically bc i'm a pretty thrifty person but i decided to take somebody up on it and actually make one. you know what i found that could easily be changed? not a damn thing. like i'm a 20 something bachelor so basically my only luxury is buying new guns (which i don't do unless i have a lot of extra cash) and going out with friends (does not eat up much $). so am i supposed to cut like my 1 luxury and just be a machine who goes to and from work? aint like i got a bunch of streaming subscriptions or whatever to remove instead. i make my own coffee at home instead of starbucks and don't eat avocado toast... your move boomers, what's your solution now?

anyway sorry for the vent/rant, but what we need to do is stop loose monetary and fiscal policy that transfers wealth to people who got assets like real estate and stock (boomers, the rich) from people who don't (young people, the poor). but nobody wants to do that...

collegeburner··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
wrong, it's a shitty metric. consumers care about inflation bc it represe ts their quality of life getting more expensive. trimming is the equivalent of saying "lol just downgrade" which is not a good answer.

you can't watch people switch their crab and milk for krab and powdered milk then be like "oh we'll just trim that out of inflation lmao". inflation is not supposed to measure change in average cost of necessities, it's supposed to measure change in a basket of basic goods.

collegeburner··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%

This starts getting toward "everything everywhere is securities fraud". This probably would have come up in tech diligence but he waived that.

The nice thing about TOTP is i can put it in my password manager which makes life a whole lot more convenient. W for open standards.

"Your honor, I have investigated myself and found myself innocent."
collegeburner··on Ask HN: Google Search down?
I've had to search stuff in bing because for some reason google had only the shitty mirror sites for github issues/stackoverflow/whatever indexed. I could literally do a quote search and not get the original source.

My right to privacy ends when i start engaging in money laundering or fraud not when somebody else does. Otherwise this is a stupid argument because there will always be somebody engaging in money laundering or fraud so there will never be privacy. There's no justification to say "oh well it's possible you're engaging in one of those so we have to remove your privacy so we know. But it's to keep everybody safe/for the children/insert bullshit excuse here so what do you have to hide!"

And bills probably shouldn't be serialized for that exact reason. My right to privacy is more important than anybody's right to feel "safe" from the evil bad guys. The correct answer to stopping crime is to stop crime, not to weaponize our financial system and remove civil liberties.
