colinbartlett··on Developer salary spreadsheet compiled from tweets
In the US, the National Labor Relations Act expressly forbids employers from preventing employees from discussing wages. So it’s certainly not legal for a company to fire someone for their tweet, at least in the US.
colinbartlett··on Dependency Drift: A Metric for Software Aging
I believe Dependabot quantifies this to some extent with a "Compatibility score": https://dependabot.com/#how-it-works

But it can only measure what people have test coverage for, presumably.

colinbartlett··on Dependency Drift: A Metric for Software Aging
Co-author here, thanks for the input. We use Dependabot on all our projects and love it. I've not seen any kind of numeric metric in Dependabot or any of their competitors.

What I really want is a graph that shows, numerically, the drift over time. You can show this to your stakeholders: "See, look! We haven't dedicated time to stack upgrades and now look how far out of date we are creeping." And then, consequently, I want to see that chart burn down to zero as you do stay on top of things with the help of Dependabot or similar.

colinbartlett··on Ask HN: Which is the most successful one-person business you heard of in 2019?
indiehackers.com is a great source for advice, though it’s not quite as personal as a “mentor”.
colinbartlett··on Show HN: Referlist – Increase email sign-ups via word of mouth referrals
This looks really cool, nice work launching. I'm ready to use it on a project that I'm building.

However... When I signed up on your site, I received the confirmation email to my Gmail inbox but when I clicked on the link it said:

> Suspicious link > This link leads to an untrusted site. Are you sure you want to proceed to referlist.co?

I'm not sure why Google would think your site is suspicious but I'll refrain from using the service until that kink is worked out, as I wouldn't want my prospective users seeing that.

colinbartlett··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking Freelancer? (December 2019)
SEEKING WORK | NYC & Remote | Ruby/Rails

If you need senior Ruby expertise, reach out to me. I have been working exclusively with Rails for almost 15 years and can provide maximum value to teams needing deep Rails expertise, advice, consulting, and pair programming.

colinbartlett··on P5.Riso.js: a p5.js library for generating files suitable for Risograph printing
Wow, thanks for sharing this! It’s so cool to see these things are still around and enjoying new uses. I remember them fondly from my youth. At my church, we had one in addition to the normal photocopier and I was fascinated with how it worked in comparison.

At the time, it was significantly cheaper to print on the Risograph, but only if you were printing more than say, 100, because of the fixed cost of the stencil it had to create.

The quality of the output was different, not necessarily worse, but not as black and with a more official feel than a photocopy. They had a distinctive smell and came out slightly wet for a few seconds.

colinbartlett··on 1.5M Packages a Day: The Internet Brings Chaos to N.Y. Streets
I would love to see the city propose some radical ideas to help solve these traffic problems. Such as closing more or most cross streets to through traffic, as was done recently with 14th Street. Or eliminating all on street parking. Or increasing car ownership taxes.
colinbartlett··on Currency is popular again, especially the $100 bill
This is the main reason I get $2 bills instead $1 bills from my bank now. The latter is a lot more useful for picking something up from the corner store or for a small tip, simply because the value of the dollar bill has gone down.
colinbartlett··on My Letter to the Editor of New York Times Magazine
He is an author who does speaking and consulting on the basis of his experience. I don’t believe his branding is anything abnormal or differing much from that of prominent software development authors, speakers, and consultants.
colinbartlett··on A Low-Fare Loophole for International Travelers
Exaggeration is right. There is really nothing special about these routes with respect to fares. Only that perhaps there is more competition.

They are famous among aviation enthusiasts simply as a way to get access to airlines that one might otherwise have to travel great distances to try.

colinbartlett··on AWS EC2/RDS Outage in us-east-1
This seems to affect a broad swath of the internet, perhaps because the us-east-1 region is so popular? My side project StatusGator shows approximately 15% of the status pages we monitor (including our own) with a warn or down notice right now, a sizable spike over the baseline.
colinbartlett··on Ransomware-ing a DSLR Camera
I really appreciate researchers like this who take the time to explain in detail the way in which they find vulnerabilities, especially when they document even the dead ends. For a relative lay person like myself, it really helps me gain an understanding and appreciation for the work that goes into keeping applications secure.
colinbartlett··on Cloudflare Network Performance Issues
That number matches what I am seeing on StatusGator: Of the 438 status pages we monitor, 52 of them are showing some kind of warn or down notice right now. That's almost 12%.

Though some of them might not be because of Cloudflare, the ones I spot checked all do appear related. Medium, DigitalOcean, Shopify, CodeShip, Pingdom, and many more. The impact is staggering.

colinbartlett··on Why is Stack Overflow trying to start audio?
They realized it was a risk so they built their own browser to have more control. And it worked. Only now, users are wising up and moving to Firefox.
colinbartlett··on States are looking to jam T-Mobile and Sprint’s proposed $26.5B merger
Instead of approving this merger, is there another way the government could encourage competition? Perhaps break up the larger carriers or some how promote new upstart competition?

Your statement sounds correct but I don’t exactly like the reality.

colinbartlett··on Quick Fix: A vending machine selling likes and followers
This is an art project but like and follower vending machines do exist on a commercial basis. Here's one I saw in St. Petersburg, Russia selling likes, along with print outs of photos from social media: https://imgur.com/a/zQVdS7c

The price was 100 likes for a 100 rubles, about $1.50 USD or so.

colinbartlett··on Google Cloud Is Down
I'm just assuming they are because it's been previously reported that Apple uses GCP (and also AWS).

https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/27/apple-now-relies-on-google...

colinbartlett··on Google Cloud Is Down
I don't know about Steam, but I know Apple must use Google Cloud: https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/
colinbartlett··on Google Cloud Is Down
Google Cloud is the number 4 most monitored status page on StatusGator and Google Apps is number 12. In addition, at least 20 other services we monitor seemingly depend on Google Cloud because they all posted issues as soon as Google went down.

It's always interesting to see these outages at large cloud providers spider out across the rest of the internet, a lot of the world depends on Google to stay up.

colinbartlett··on Property managers bring in Alexa to manage tenants
That never works for me for WSJ, I think they disabled that.
colinbartlett··on Ask HN: A Good Alternative for ReCaptcha?
If you work in the Ruby ecosystem at all, there is a gem called invisible_captcha that does just this. It beat back most of the bot signups we were getting, though some still slip through occasionally.

https://github.com/markets/invisible_captcha

colinbartlett··on Dependabot is now free
Greenkeeper seems to only support NPM, whereas Dependabot supports NPM, RubyGems, a bunch of other languages.
colinbartlett··on Beyond Meat S-1
I find it amusing how confidently you state that. As if completely ignoring all the people who have said that same thing every year for the past 5.
colinbartlett··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
StatusGator is the status page monitoring service I built. It’s been profitable since about 2016.

Though I very recently took on a partner to try and grow it because I believe it can be more than just “profitable” but perhaps actually a sole income source one day. It’s great to have a “one person” company but I feel it’s even better to have a partner to help inspire and motivate you, especially when it’s a side project and not a full time job.

colinbartlett··on Appeal accepted: Google removed my ads-free app for “deceptive ads”
So if I get this correct, the app ID of com.mommysaverapp.plus is correct but the screenshots they use to justify their app removal are not from that app?!
colinbartlett··on GitHub Status – Incident on 2019-03-12
Depends on what you mean by normal but compared to many of the status pages I am tracking, GitHub has a pretty low incident rate (though an uptick very recently): https://statusgator.com/services/github
colinbartlett··on Spotify adds 1M unique listeners in India in less than a week
I recently visited India and was shocked at how cheap the data plan was. By far the cheapest data I’ve used anywhere in the world.
colinbartlett··on Show HN: ASCII TV – Stream ASCII movies in your terminal with curl
To think that anyone on the wire could manipulate the stream so that Greedo shoots first... horrifying.
colinbartlett··on Happy Birthday, Ruby
I’ve also been using Ruby full time for 13 or 14 years and I am really hoping its popularity and commercial viability continues for another 13 years (or another 25).

I’m certain my level of mastery contributes to my enjoyment. And it’s not that I don’t like learning new things, I do! But Ruby is just an absolute pleasure to write, and it’s hard to imagine spending 8+ hours a day living in any other ecosystem.
