colept··on SJCL – Stanford JavaScript Crypto Library
As with anything - the result is only as secure as transmission and execution - so isolation is the only guarantee. If you're truly paranoid - run without network connectivity and transmit through physical media.

That being said, this was a fun project that demonstrates encryption at the lowest common denominator - versus the complexities of setting up PGP for email. This is something my grandmother still using AOL could use.

colept··on SJCL – Stanford JavaScript Crypto Library
It's a plaintext password - not nearly as secure as PGP or the like.
colept··on SJCL – Stanford JavaScript Crypto Library
Shameless plug: SJCL is a great library and easy to work with.

I've used it to build a non-profit decentralized encryption tool that can be used to send and receive files that will self-decrypt using SJCL, JavaScript FileReader, and HTML5 download attributes.

User A creates a password to encrypt a file using this client-side mechanism - which produces a self-decrypting HTML file. User B opens this HTML file in their browser which will ask them for the password to decrypt the file allowing them to download the original file all without a server. The homepage can be downloaded and self-hosted at will.

colept··on Tyson Foods CEO: The Future of Food Might Be Meatless
I have tried Crickets and while insects are efficient to raise - their feet are like small toothpicks.
colept··on Ask HN: Why snapchat clones did not launch or take off or succeed?
Because the parents of kids using Snapchat do not use snapchat - and therefore there's no reason to flee.
colept··on Ask HN: How can I improve my personal website?
It tries to be both technical and conversational while committing to neither. On first glance it looks like a terminal bot but I don't think it speaks towards your potential skills.

For example it says "Why don't you say hello?" - my first instinct was to say "hello" but it responded with "do you need any help?" to which I replied "yes." Nothing happened - a net negative interaction.

Throw out the frills. Sell yourself and your skills - if you want to be hired. Demonstrate what someone would expect from your work. Generic and accessible goes a lot further than quirky obfuscation. In many circumstances, the terminal expert is not the only one looking at your portfolio.

colept··on High-Memory Instances and $5 Linodes
I've been with Linode for a little over five years and a satisfied customer.

That being said - their policy for handling DMCA notices is abysmal. They will network filter out your Linode until you respond to the notice.

colept··on High-Memory Instances and $5 Linodes
ColdFusion or not - Linode's hosting panel is one of the simplest and flexible management interface I've experienced. Digital Ocean's is too simple, and some other providers are too infuriating. Linode is that porridge that's just right.
colept··on Websites can now fingerprint a device when multiple browser instances are used
The problem is not Javascript - throwing out JavaScript is like throwing out your utensils because your meal is too sweet.

The problem is browsers are made by advertising entities that also leverage these same abilities.

colept··on New Macbook Pro power efficiency and time remaining
> effectively added a second screen

Powering a main screen versus a screen 1/15th of the size hardly qualifies as "effectively... a second screen"

> improved overall performance

Is it possible newer components are more optimized to draw less power for the same or more performance?

colept··on YubiKey 4C
Both the static and OTP modes of Yubikey work for me through this adapter.
colept··on YubiKey 4C
Get a Lightning to Camera (USB) adapter. Works fine here.
colept··on YubiKey 4C
They do work with phones. I have an iPhone with a Lightning-Camera (USB) adapter and use it all the time.
colept··on Revert the GitHub dark header
They should make the rest of the site dark to match. Problem solved.
colept··on Revert the GitHub dark header
I like the new header tho - jet black / blue is a good look.
colept··on CSS Grid – Table layout is back. Be there and be square
I am wondering if this layout engine also has issues with half-pixel placements? With Flexbox, if you position an element in a way that it lands on a half-pixel, it becomes blurry.
colept··on Chronic sleep deprivation suppresses immune system
Those other questions are too intimate for a conversation starter.
colept··on Chronic sleep deprivation suppresses immune system
I wish Americans as a whole took sleep more seriously.

We stay up late, brag about how little of it we need, and ignore the downsides. When I sleep less I find myself more irritable.

To see studies like this is refreshing.

> ... and that's their own problem.

Hence deprecation right out the gate. V4 is much better, great work - but blaming users for API churn does not make me confident. Sure users could have used a stable release, but then upgrade twice? What confidence is there that it won't churn again?

colept··on Show HN: Requesting feedback
I liked the website for it's minimalistic aesthetic but the ease-in animations need to be faster.
colept··on React Router: Declarative Routing for React
I look forward to the day when people can criticize a product for churning an API twice in one year without receiving the obligatory "if you don't like it, don't use it" cliché remark.

Improvement or not, to buy into a product that has churned twice in one year is a bad investment and for those who are lucky enough to not be caught in the middle - should be warned.

edit: I've used V4 and it's a vast improvement, but I stand by my remark.

colept··on React Router: Declarative Routing for React
I look forward to the next API revision. Churning your API frequently turns me off as a developer who would rather not be deprecated out the gate.
colept··on Ask HN: How to ask for an hourly rate
I suggest watching this talk: https://creativemornings.com/talks/mike-monteiro--2/1

The speaker is eccentric and sometimes unhinged but many freelancers need to hear it.

colept··on Get Ready for a Coffee Renaissance Thanks to Genetics
I am perfectly okay with GMO coffee. If they could make a coffee bean that also contained theanine I would buy.
colept··on Spin wants to bring dock-less bike sharing to the US
The biggest source of conflict with Citibike is that they removed the feature to report bikes as broken. So they take twice as long to be replaced.

Since then I've moved to a position where it's cheaper to have my own bike or walk.

colept··on Spin wants to bring dock-less bike sharing to the US
Sure they're lighter, but the old ones were resilient and didn't fall apart as easily.
colept··on Spin wants to bring dock-less bike sharing to the US
How is this better than docking stations?

I tried bike sharing and gave it up because the bikes were poorly maintained and replaced with cheaper bikes (thanks Citibike). Bikes fail, sometimes missing brakes, other times a flat tire.

Why are docking stations important? Because a couple times a week I notice the company pull up with a trailer and maintain the bikes. They swap out the broken ones and fill the stations.

Is Spin going to drive around the city tracking individual bikes to replace them?

colept··on Ask HN: Making time for side project?
Separate tasks into smaller bites - trying to do too much at once will feel overwhelming as if nothing is being accomplished. This way I can do at least one thing a day and feel like I'm making progress.
colept··on Ask HN: Website concept for better dialog in society
There are plenty of channels for this sort of thing, for example on reddit you have sub-communities like /r/AskAVegan and /r/AskDocs
colept··on All References to Climate Change Have Been Deleted from the White House Website
As someone who lives in South Florida it's bad enough we have to deal with Rick Scott denying rising sea tides in his own back yard.

Now we're up against a POTUS who denies the disaster we will face in twenty years yet owns property in the afflicted area (North Miami Beach - Trump Towers). As I watch the city raise the sidewalks and roads by a foot I'm astounded. I've lived here for three years and since I got here every major roadway has been under construction - installing pumps to return flood water back to the bay. When I first arrived, you couldn't cross the street without steeping ankle deep into water and it's getting better. But pumps were only installed in key areas that affected the Mayor's and his friends' commercial properties.

I cannot buy property here because to do so would be a huge mistake considering what is now beach front will be underwater unless something is done about it.
