Paying taxes is a tad different than being a DoD contractor.
colejohnson66··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I used to. In the "golden days" of "there's an app for that", I would peruse the App Store looking for new games. I spend hundreds of dollars on games doing that. Now, the only games you see really are shovelware or subscription garbage.
colejohnson66··on Can gzip be a language model?
Even German has issues with "letters surrounded by spaces". They love to smash words together to get one giant word.

colejohnson66··on What Sun got wrong
If you're looking for rad hardened boards, you're not a "consumer" in the general sense of the word.
colejohnson66··on I said no and Apple said yes
In vast parts of America, the "local PC shop" doesn't exist. It's BestBuy's GeekSquad (of dubious quality) or Apple's Genius Bar. There might be a repair shop somewhere, but most of the time, they just repair cracked screens.
colejohnson66··on I said no and Apple said yes
And System76 charges you just as "absurdly" as Apple. But people don't complain about the price there like you see with Apple.
colejohnson66··on I asked Meta’s Muse for its filesystem and it sent me 6.8GB
It's been like this since programming was "invented". Managers and business minds have, for decades, tried to remove the need for programmers. "If we provide a detailed enough spec, why do we need programmers?"

For example, COBOL's big shtick was that non-programmers could write code using a contrived English dialect, and things would work. Decades of no-code or low-code languages have come and gone. AI is just the hip new thing because it actually manages to produce results - just of dubious quality half the time.

colejohnson66··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
Are you sure that wasn't the VPN's fault?
colejohnson66··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
Chinese scammers have gotten good at abusing those "codes" by having a list of "known good" codes and printing them on multiple units. And because those holographic codes some companies used are printed in China, the scammers just use the same equipment during the night shift.

colejohnson66··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
AMD does market segmentation and limits consumer chips to dual-channel. You need to cough up the dough and get Threadripper for quad-channel. Or even more for Threadripper Pro to get octa-channel.
colejohnson66··on UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8
Thankfully, this is changing. Win32's 'A' ANSI/ASCII APIs now support UTF-8 if your app declares such a wish. https://stackoverflow.com/a/69181417/1350209
colejohnson66··on UTF-8000: Unlimited UTF-8
But by then, the 4-byte limit of UTF-8 will itself have ossified. Even today, reverting back to the 6-byte limit is nigh impossible.
colejohnson66··on C++26: Trivial infinite loops are no longer undefined behaviour
Why not just execute what I wrote? Maybe I'm doing some rounding?
colejohnson66··on Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography
Still, "the same camera" isn't "this person" without more information.
colejohnson66··on iPhone Duo
Case in point: fiber optics.
colejohnson66··on iPhone Duo
The screens are made by Samsung, but aren't designed by Samsung. Samsung's display and their phone division are completely separate.
colejohnson66··on Microsoft/TracerAI withdraws copyright takedown against Luanti
For context, GitHub's DMCA form has this assertion:

> I swear, under penalty of perjury, that the information in this notification is accurate and that I am the copyright owner, or am authorized to act on behalf of the owner, of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

colejohnson66··on Anthropic & friends caught paying religious NGO's 3.3M for propaganda
HN guidelines say to use the actual title and to not editorialize it.
colejohnson66··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Not to mention that on 32-bit without PAE, that was all you could get. Nothing more.
colejohnson66··on How Many Elementary Particles Are There, Really?
That's what the various string theory proponents start from. There's "too many" different subatomic particles, so there surely must be something smaller that they're composed of?
colejohnson66··on The adder at the heart of Intel's 8087 floating-point chip
The ROM used different sized transistors to store two bits per transistor. That's pure analog territory, which most HDLs don't touch.
colejohnson66··on C array types are weird
Yes it does. It just decays to a pointer at the slightest touch.
colejohnson66··on CVE-2026-28952: Apple macOS 26.5 Kernel Vuln found by Claude
So what already happens, but worse?
colejohnson66··on IBM didn't want Microsoft to use the Tab key to move between dialog fields
Wasn't that due to trademarks?
colejohnson66··on I went to America's worst national parks so you don't have to
We once did a hike from Chamberlain's Ranch down. No one else for 10+ miles until we reached the switchbacks at the end. It really depends on where you go.
colejohnson66··on Michigan 'digital age' bills pulled after privacy concerns raised
"Can we do X, Y, Z?" Yes? Or maybe later?

It's so annoying. No means no, not "pester me later"!

colejohnson66··on Michigan 'digital age' bills pulled after privacy concerns raised
I should not need extensions for a business to respect my privacy. It's as simple as that.

If you look at it through an equity angle, needing extensions relegates the negative effects to those that are already not "well off" — the technologically illiterate who don't know what to do or know someone who does.

colejohnson66··on Jennifer Aniston and Friends Cost Us 377GB and Broke Ext4 Hardlinks
Doesn’t read like AI to me
colejohnson66··on Adobe wrote to my hosts file. I've never had an app do this before
Even then, the installer itself has administrative access already, should they choose to do it then.
