Civil suit for violating terms of license agreement

The same concept that allows a corporation to sue and be sued allows it to be charged with crimes
colechristensen··on I refuse to let SPICE die
It's possible and I have a very early E2E test. A modification of the sunshine backend itself to be able to connect to qemu. In the future it's definitely possible to have this directly in qemu but it would require reimplementing the whole sunshine protocol

Follow along https://anvil.fangorn.io/fangorn/sunshine-qemu and https://blog.fangorn.io (there isn't anything here yet)

Hm. That's a situational rule. In this case it makes it funnier. A person could write a whole encyclopedia of lore tracing Kallax back to its mythical roots.
colechristensen··on I refuse to let SPICE die
This is a great idea and perhaps not all that hard. I'm getting started on it.
colechristensen··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
My dislike for brand crossovers is inversely correlated with how reasonable a match the brands are.

Ikea vs. The Sims? Lame, obvious

Ikea vs. Skyrim? 10/10 no notes

colechristensen··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
Honestly I like Chex Quest more than Doom.

It would be hilarious if they made more of them. Chex: Eternal, Chex: Age of Breakfast

Play it! https://dos.zone/chex-quest-1996/

I've found the strongest signal that someone has no opinions of value is a loud attempt to denigrate something based on the name.

Maybe it's part of the success formula for startups, silly names cause shallow self-important customers and employees to self-select themselves out of a growing companies orbit. Such trivialities are poison. People and companies who make a lot of effort to make themselves seem serious and important very often have nothing of substance about them.

colechristensen··on Show HN: Godot and Rust based multiplexer (terminal panes and more)
I've done a lot of things reusing/modifying the internals of alacritty [1] to put terminals in things. TeX in the terminal [2], a terminal in minecraft [3], Alacritty in Godot [4], and not pictured, alacritty in a swift plugin for macos/ios/ipados all at various levels of completion.

colechristensen··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
I had this terribly rocky relationship with a woman and years later she'd gotten a career in tech and apologized saying she now understood my box of cables. That was about the only apology of hers I ever really believed.
colechristensen··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
AV, Network, Data, Power (if it doesn't fit the first category, try the next)

If one of those buckets is too full, prepend it with something more specific

i.e. USB, Data instead of just Data

colechristensen··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
things like old hdmi cables need to go, updated specs mean the old ones fundamentally don't work.

learn how and get the tools to strip wires and sell the metal for scrap when you have too much, do it right and better than recycling, you can sell it

colechristensen··on Blizzard Workers Win Historic Union Contract
Big corporate gaming studios get my full support for unionizing, those people need collective bargaining. I am a skeptic of many unionizing efforts, but not this one.
colechristensen··on Investing in Mothers? The Long-Run Impact of a Universal Child Care
Usually what people mean by this is "build smaller living spaces closer together"
colechristensen··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
Women entering the workforce eroded the ability to maintain a household on one income because of depressed wages and housing competition. There's no absolute cost to housing, people will pay what they afford and making more money means the housing cost rises, it doesn't make people "richer" just everything else more expensive.

This isn't an argument that women shouldn't be allowed to work or anything ridiculous like that. We ALL should work less.

Unfortunately just about everything ends up being an unintentional subsidy to the ever growing real estate price.

You want to invest in mothers and do a million other societal benefit things? Do everything you can to damage the ability of people to profit from owning residential real estate.

colechristensen··on Flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
Very little you can do will have any effect on how an airplane airplanes, particularly in a systematic failure.

Advocating for your health care can have very large effects, healthcare suffers from a strong lack of someone being in charge of and following your care, it's more like a collection of poorly communicating agents giving you brief spurts of attention somehow leading to a resolution. In other words, folks are barely paying attention to you.

colechristensen··on Flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
People will be angry regardless of what they say, some if they say they're sorry, some if they don't say they're sorry. Regardless of what they say, some set of people or another is going to come out and be angry about it.

What do you hope to accomplish with the phone call?

Failures happen, does it make a difference if there's someone in charge feeling a strong emotion about it? Do the call center staff have to feel genuine guilt as if their mediocre job somehow made them personally responsible?

Being angry is just as useless as faking being sorry, all they're doing is acknowledging a screwup in an automated message. Give them a break.

colechristensen··on Jellyfin 12.0
huh, yeah I should start an xbmc fork/reimagining. the limitations with the tools of the day are imagination. a LOT of the software I use these days are things I facilitated the creation of and a media player is definitely supposed to be on that list
colechristensen··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
are state's attourney's general going to go after them? eh.

you ask if they're enforceable but that's the wrong question, the real question is will anyone do anything to stop them?

This is the kind of thing that states need to make explicitly illegal.

colechristensen··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
You also don't need to live in a fluffy cotton candy world where everyone pretends to be nice. A CEO needs to be able to directly tell people they're doing a bad job and give out consequences for it. Wrapping the same feedback in fluffy feelings oriented language is a different kind of abusiveness (and why I hate California)
colechristensen··on Tell HN: OpenAI brings back 5 hour limit for plus and business standard users
In all of them I've seen it's a window that starts when you haven't been using it in a while and begin work OR when your previous window expired. The window starts with a set number of tokens and cuts you off when they're used, it is fully reset at the end of the window (it's not a sliding window).

When you haven't used any tokens for an extended amount of time it reverts to the point where whenever you send your first token is when the window begins.

colechristensen··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker
How did/do you feel about that?
colechristensen··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
The reason why Apple won is Steve Jobs cared about quality and was an asshole about it and the inertia from that after his death has not entirely decayed yet.

The people in that thread need a good Linus Torvalds style rant about their incompetence and several of them should just have been fired.

colechristensen··on Bing Wallpaper showing Ad for Harry Potter and Fantastic beasts box set
A glacial collapse did indeed cause wild flash flooding in Tibet and Nepal and many people were killed including people from around the world and many locals, it reaches back home in USAID cuts eliminated a program to detect and warn about this very thing.

It's not particularly "sensational" news but a tragedy with many global connections.

colechristensen··on Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?
I am somewhat confused by takes like this. Of course skills are just prompts, this is the whole point.

A skill is just a stored prompt you want to put more information into than you're likely to type out every time you intend to do that thing. Documentation of a business process.

colechristensen··on Why are there no flow batteries with symmetric ferrocyanide electrolytes?
An energy comparison: a semi tanker of gasoline hauls about 300 MWh of chemical energy potential.
colechristensen··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
>But there must be something better than just keeping to buy things that invade our privacy and homes further and further. Which brands aren’t doing this? Sony? They also announced a partnership for the lower end TVs IIRC.

Smart people need to band together to advocate their state governments to make commercial mass surveillance for any purpose a criminal offense (not just banning, making it a crime).

colechristensen··on Doomscrolling ourselves to death
eventually you lose most of your friends, your neuroplasticity dies down, you stop trying to look cool, fall out of the zeitgeist, and whatever strange things the kids are saying these days becomes annoying because you've stopped participating in culture and it starts to scare and confuse you
colechristensen··on Doomscrolling ourselves to death
I'm sorry to break it to you but this isn't social media, it's you getting old.

Most language is invented by children and most of what they invent dies pretty quickly. You transition from not noticing it's new because you weren't alive before to keeping up to falling behind to getting annoyed.
