codydillabough··on Show HN: Receive curated trip ideas by text based on your country's lockdown
Hi pachico,

This sentiment makes sense, we have a few safeguards in place right now, but we wanted to open this feature up to people who might not already be using the app and telephone number felt like the best way.

We will have a think about a better way to implement this.

Thanks for the feedback!

codydillabough··on Show HN: Stabilize your income by building a financial cushion
Hi HN,

My name is Cody and I am a co-founder of Cushion (https://www.trycushion.com). Cushion helps you ensure you can always make ends meet by stabilizing your income, smoothing in times of plenty/scarcity and guiding you on how to strengthen your financial foundation.

We think the way people talk about saving for emergencies needs a refresh, the "rule of thumb" mentality is clearly suboptimal as many of us have different risk levels dictated by our lifestyles. By automatically adjusting to global & individual risk levels, your "cushion" will adapt, increasing and decreasing in its target size.

For us, COVID-19 was just another wake-up call that we need to prioritize protecting our finances, and with the pace that the world currently moves at, uncertainty may just be the new normal.

We strive to build the tools to help people optimize their emergency funds, to help freelancers with volatile incomes manage their cash flows, and to help us all sleep a little easier.

A little about us I have the pleasure of working with a passionate team bolstered by years of experience in both finance and technology and an overarching vision of simplifying some of the complexity that litters the world of personal finance - and hopefully, make a difference in some people's lives.

Any/all feedback is welcome and appreciated!

codydillabough··on What HN readers think of remote work
Results from https://www.letsgoremote.ca

INDIVIDUALS

- An overwhelming 79.8% of the individuals enjoy WFH

- Just under half of the individuals claim to have "expert" level of experience working from home, 84% of these individuals enjoy WFH, but you have to assume that there is some degree of self-selection going on here

- Of the individuals who like WFH, 82% had a good "home office" setup

- The largest problems tended to be: focusing, missing the office, and feeling isolated in that order

- The largest problem that people wrote in was that there isn't a clear separation between work and home life and they are working more hours from home

- For people who missed their office, the main reasons were: saying hi to coworkers (73%) and getting out of the home (70%). These were considerably higher than too many distractions at home (19%) and too much noise at home (5%)

- If an individual complained about being bored, they are only 66% likely to enjoy WFH

If an individual says they don't have a routine, they are only 58% likely to enjoy WFH

- Pretty much the only subgroup of people who disliked WFH more than enjoyed it were people who complained about missing dressing up for the office

- People expressed an interest in wanting to learn an additional language, code, personal finance and then cook in descending order.

EMPLOYERS

- The top problems for employers were 1) maintaining a sense of community: 57%, 2) maintaining employee morale: 50% and 3) keeping employees accountable: 43%. Problems with morale were amplified in "expert" remote companies

- Chat was by the most common source of communication (75%)

- Spanning multiple timezones made no significant impact on whether or not the company had problems with maintaining a community and/or employee morale

- Just under half the companies typically communicate with whiteboards

- The main employee count range tended to be from 10-80

- The most common project management style was a good ol' fashioned checklist.

codydillabough··on Show HN: A quiz for companies/people to learn about tools for remote work
Hi staflow,

Our goal is certainly not to list overpriced SaaS if there is a FOSS equivalent that is just as good if not better. So if you have any specific examples you saw please let us know here and I will make those updates ASAP!

The use case for this is targetted towards people that don't even know what to google to get started. Us tech people have the amazing luxury of being around these products on a day-to-day basis and being able to at least be informed on what the SaaS landscape that's available to them looks like, but if you are moving remote for the first time, you don't know what you don't know, and you might not even be able to kick-off that initial google search.

That is who we hope to be able to help, at least kick off the process of understanding what types of tools are available to them to make that remote experience a little be better.

codydillabough··on Show HN: A quiz for companies/people to learn about tools for remote work
Hi HN,

I built letsgoremote.ca over the weekend and will admit it is a little rough around the edges so I would absolutely love any feedback or ideas to improve the experience.

The reason why I built this was to help newly "remote-ized" companies or individuals to go through a quick quiz and learn about some of the tools that are available to them. I assume a lot of you are remote work experts, but these tools/services are completely foreign to a large part of the population and this part of the population are the ones that we are really trying to help in some fashion.

You can read more about the mission here: https://letsgoremote.ca/mission

If you have any feedback/ideas or want to help in anyway either pop on over to https://letsgoremote.ca/help or respond in the comments here.

Hope this can be helpful to at least someone!

codydillabough··on Show HN: Avoy – the app to cure your wanderlust when we are all stuck indoors
Hey HN! My name is Cody and I am the founder of Avoy (https://www.avoy.io/hn). Avoy is an invite-only travel inspiration app to discover the world’s best hidden holiday destinations.

Today, we have temporarily turned off the required invite code to open registration up to the HN Community. If you seeing this at a later date, but still want to give us a try, send me a note at cody@avoy.io and I would be more than happy to help get you a code to get set up.

Why build this?

Simply put to change the way we answer the question of "where should I go next?". There is a myriad of travel content, bloggers and apps, however, the fundamental structures provided to us by search and social media create homogeneity, travel group-think and dangerous overtourism. We want to build an exciting product that allows travelers to discover the hundreds of hidden gems that each country offers:

Our mission

We believe the most memorable travel experiences come when we allow ourselves to wander off the beaten path.

Our goal is to share the finest unspoiled destinations from around the world and help you discover somewhere unique.

A little about us

I have the incredible luck to be working with a great team of individuals & contributors from around the globe, all bonded around the mission that travel should be an exploratory, exciting way to learn about the vast world that surrounds us.

We are super passionate about building a product that people love and enjoy and can transform perspectives on this wonderful world we inhabit and are even more passionate about it now that we are in a time of global uncertainty. If anyone has feedback, comments or suggestions we would absolutely love to hear them.
