codingwagie··on Why Google search is falling apart [video]
Google search is absolutely terrible. There's just no alternative, so there's no reasonable benchmark (until ChatGPT)
codingwagie··on Meteorologists get death threats as hurricane conspiracy theories thrive
My argument isnt changing, its just there were so many holes in the investigation I dont even know where to start. I'm busy at work, but again, just go watch the end of the investigation interview with Muller. Watch how little he understands, how little he was involved. Then go watch all media coverage, and how they Gush over him. Go look at the facts of what actually came out. Why didnt they prosecute trump? If you cant look at the above points with open eyes and read between the lines, then you are clouded by ideology.

The muller interview doesnt disprove/get Trump off the hook at all. It was for me, just a shocking display of realizing that what was shown in the public eye about the invesitgation had nothing to do with the reality.

Much like everyone realizing biden isnt running the country, and probably has alzheimers.

codingwagie··on Meteorologists get death threats as hurricane conspiracy theories thrive
Go watch the interview with Mueller at the end of the investigation. He was completely senile and knew nothing about the case. Mueller himself was a puppet for other people.
codingwagie··on Meteorologists get death threats as hurricane conspiracy theories thrive
They would have thrown him in jail if they found anything. it was political theater, and essentially a coup
codingwagie··on Meteorologists get death threats as hurricane conspiracy theories thrive
Russian disinformation is itself a conspiracy theory. Trump was investigated for the last decade, they essentially found nothing.
codingwagie··on Meteorologists get death threats as hurricane conspiracy theories thrive
A lot of storms are blown out of proportion to get clicks. There is a large gap between the predicted damage and the actual damage.
codingwagie··on What is "founder mode"?
Its forcing employees to create value, when they really just want to collect compensation
codingwagie··on Ask HN: In 2024, is SWE a sustainable career?
My personal opinion is most software will be easy to write by a junior programmer. There will still be high paid roles, but this will be a low paid profession. Web development, UI, etc will be heavily automated with LLMs. You will guide the model in building the software. It's already this way using cursor.sh, most people just havent realized it yet.
codingwagie··on Sorry, GenAI is NOT going to 10x computer programming
I'll never understand people that cannot project current progress into what we may see with further progress.
codingwagie··on Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth
What I am seeing is that among Harvard/Stanford grads, being the CEO of a venture backed startup is the highest status. Some of them hate technology and view programming as "low class". But they still go into it, so when they see their peers its something to brag about. They may even stretch the runway as far as possible to maintain the status.

YC is just another brand they can add. It was so odd for me when I first realized this is how it works. And the investors are often just investing based on where they went to school. Real metrics dont come into play until later, during which they have the capital to hire people that actually know what theyre doing.

codingwagie··on Y Combinator Traded Prestige for Growth
Starting a startup is now a prestige game. Its a career path. Spend enough time with ivy league grads and youll realize this is true
codingwagie··on Mira Murati leaves OpenAI
My bet is all of these people can raise 20-100M for their own startups. And they are already rich enough to retire. OpenAI is going corporate
codingwagie··on Why Most Published Research Findings Are False (2005)
Some huge percentage of STEM graduate school is just for immigration

These people are not seeking "truth"

codingwagie··on What would be the right path to learn AI?
Waste of time, just get good at using LLMs via api
codingwagie··on The Intelligence Age
I actually originally wrote off the o1 model. Another thing I have found it's good at is finding bugs in a ton of code. Give it ten coding files, and a stack trace, it can find the bug.
codingwagie··on The Intelligence Age
The model's arent there yet. I am confused how people cannot extrapolate into the future and understand that the models will improve
codingwagie··on The Intelligence Age
Actually not sure about this, with the leverage of AI, its easier than ever to start a company
codingwagie··on The Intelligence Age
“This may turn out to be the most consequential fact about all of history so far. It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days (!); it may take longer, but I’m confident we’ll get there.”

I am a believer that people like sam are not lying. Anyone using these models daily probably believes the same. The o1 model, if prompted correctly, can architect a code base in a way that my decade+ of premium software experience cannot. Prompted incorrectly, it looks incompetent. The abilities of the future are already here, you just need to know how to use the models.

codingwagie··on Tech jobs have dried up
This is 100% what it is. Amazon can get away with 5 days RTO because of their visa heavy engineering population
codingwagie··on Amazon employees: 'I'd rather go back to school than work in an office again'
Have you ever worked at a high paying tech company? Most are > 80%
codingwagie··on Amazon employees: 'I'd rather go back to school than work in an office again'
When American corporations have an endless amount of applications from China and India, American workers have no bargaining power. Which makes working conditions worse
codingwagie··on Amazon employees: 'I'd rather go back to school than work in an office again'
What's not spoken about is that Amazon engineering is 80%+ h1bs. They will not push back against RTO, which is why these policies can be pushed through. American workers are pushed out to companies with better working conditions. The impact of foreign workers on corporate culture cannot be underestimated, this will ripple across corporate America. We are all worse off
codingwagie··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
Managers at Amazon just enforce dates and identify the underperformer on their team.
codingwagie··on Shaving is too expensive
to each his own
codingwagie··on Shaving is too expensive
I meant dry skin with shaving cream on it. It hurts more than just wet skin in a hot shower
codingwagie··on Ilya Sutskever's SSI Inc raises $1B
I'm also confused by the negativity on here. Ilya had a direct role in creating the algorithms and systems that created modern LLMs. He pioneered the first deep learning computer vision models.
codingwagie··on Shaving is too expensive
I just reuse the same razor for months on end, sometimes six months. It gets dull, which is actually great. I get far more face cuts from a sharp razor. The dull ones I find are highly effective. I always use premium razors.

I dont use shaving cream either, just some bar soap when I am in the shower. The hot shower seems to make my skin easier to shave.

Shaving with dry skin (with shaving cream) in front of a mirror is a nightmare, and has resulted in far more cuts for me

codingwagie··on Update on Llama adoption
Dude they spent billions on the model and then just open sourced it
codingwagie··on Update on Llama adoption
Probably will get flagged, but I get so annoyed by the cynical takes on Meta and their open source strategy. Meta is the only company releasing true open source (React, pytorch, graphql) and now LLama. This company has done more for software development than any other in the last decade. And now they are burning down the competition in AI, making it accessible to all. Meta software engineering compensation strategy pushed up the high end of developer compensation by almost twice. Enough with the weird cynicism on their licensing policy.
codingwagie··on Ask HN: What does the website builder market look like?
Only way to enter the market is to build a website builder thats purely generative ui. Skip any sort of old paradigm
