I feel like you're interacting with the same people I'm interacting with because your assessment of them is spot on. They love the talking points. Whenever you shut down one talking point with facts they pole vault over that into the next talking point. They want to be 20 ft up in the air away from the truth and never question why they've been lied to. They believe and even make up wild conspiracy theories on the spot when confronted with information that conflicts with what Trump and his supporters have said and done. Their brains leap over every possible barrier I put up, never letting it stop them. Maybe I'm not a good debater but facts are facts and they don't seem to appreciate or respect or even value them. I need to find a new, less depressing group of people to be around which will unfortunately mean quitting my job but I just can't do it anymore.
I went from S20 to S21 to S24. Before that every Android phone I had was good but qc issues would pop up or some new phone would come out with much better features (eg camera quality is really important to me). Since I switched to Samsung have had 0 qc issues and every camera has been amazing. The only reason I upgrade is because it's free with my carrier so why not? Staying with Samsung if/until it changes.
I took my daughter to a Broadway Disney musical. We were almost late so I picked her up and ran multiple packed city blocks with her in my arms. I think that was her favorite part, including, which I don't remember, running in front of a tourist taking a picture of a spiderman sidewalk actor and yelling "sorry" as I passed. We also went to Disney and her favorite thing was actually just going on a ride she was nervous about and feeling good about how brave she was.
In one example, there (most likely) aren't any innocent civilians hanging around. In the other there will certainly be innocent civilians on the other end.
Knowing why and when to use math is equally as important as knowing it. One of the reasons I lost my love for learning it was this missing information.
The prisoners are not our friends. The officers are stuck together without phones for 8-16 hours/day. We spend hours crammed into the same small area with no distractions but each other. We have to entertain each other or lose our minds. I've met the best and worst people at work.
My life circumstances were such that I needed a job in a new area where that's all I was qualified to do (meaning I can breathe) while earning enough to live on. Software engineering is not an option within 90 minutes of here. Even if I could get a job in software here and it paid the same, software is significantly more stressful than my current job, the future is unsure as tech is always changing, the people I work with are closer and more friendly/outgoing, and the time off is amazing. When I leave work I'm done, there's no reading up on/practicing the latest stack without any guarantees it's going to increase my employability. When I walk out of the prison, my own personal life is all need to think about. I'd probably not take the job for less than a 50% increase in what I make now. And wages here are so low it just wouldn't happen. I do still enjoy coding but I like it as a hobby. And honestly, I was probably never very good at it.
As a former software engineer for over a decade and current corrections officer in a max level state facility, this is a very interesting topic. My facility has a large college presence within it. While there are problems with it, I think overall it is probably a net positive for the staff and inmates. At the same time, I don't believe that we have more than maybe a small handful of nonviolent/drug offenders; anybody on the outside advocating for murderers, rapists, and those in for armed robbery to have access to more of the normal comforts of the outside world is going to have a hard time and not much support. Even the medium level prisons have those types of people in them. So what facilities would wider access to remote learning and work become available? There would need to be honor facilities inmates must work towards proving they're responsible enough to be transferred to. Right now budgets are being slashed, we're at 60% staffing as it is, and the whole state is in the shit. And this is a "progressive liberal" state. It would probably take the federal government to start throwing money around for pilot programs, no state is going to increase their prison budget to accommodate this.
Regarding the set it and forget it, I can reliably steam to perfection any of the vegetables we regularly eat just by setting the pressure cook time to one minute. I don't have to constantly monitor the firmness, worry about the pot running out of water, or have uneven results. The device is worth it for that alone.
Before I got my first and only COVID vaccine two years ago I'd had vertigo on and off here and there over the years. 15 minutes after the shot, after not experiencing vertigo for a year, I was pulled over on the side of the road, and have been suffering ever since. The same thing happened to a relative. I'm not a conspiracy theorist at all and think overall the vaccine was probably positive, but we aren't getting close to the full story on side effects.
I am seeing way too many of these odd comments. If you're not interested in reducing your carbon footprint right now by reducing the energy necessary to pump, clean, and heat your bathing water you can keep that to yourself. Did you read the article? It's not trying to guilt trip you yet you react as if you've been personally attacked. This article is probably more for people like me who feel guilty showering daily due the relative lack of necessity compared to the environmental impact. Green energy isn't carbon neutral, just better than the alternatives and doesn't have a net zero impact. If you're saying we shouldn't worry about our energy production's environmental impact because eventually fusion will become reality, there is a long mean-time where our personal choices are still disruptive to the environment. I'd gladly introduce this type of system if I can do so with a reliable commercial product or a diy I could figure out. So this article is for people like me, people who'd also rather not have to wade through negative comments and actually get to the useful ones faster.
The old built in Firefox tab groups was amazing. I've left a version un-updated on one of my compters for years because of it. Unfortunately nothing has come close to replacing it. Tab groups on Opera is okay but extremely limited. Right now I'm using tree style tabs on another Firefox build and it's not bad. I wish I could name tab groups and that ctrl+tabbing through from the last tab wrapped around to the same group at the end rather than to the next tab group, but other than that it's not bad.
Which will attract a new insect that is enticed to eat the shiny new creatures which will bring in insects or others that eat those insects. There's no free lunch.
I don't know of any books. My experiences are vast periods of boredom interspersed with quick bouts of adrenaline. I've felt mostly safe but I work at a more relaxed max. We find weapons all the time but they're almost never used. I've only been almost assaulted once but the inmate coming at me was actually pulled away by another inmate. I would have been alright though, there was plenty of staff nearby if it went that way. We talk a lot of shit about each other but when the alarm goes off everybody is on the same side.
If you want to hear about prison some pretty legit channels from the side of prisoners might be interesting. Check out Lockdown23and1 or FreshOut. I prefer stories from their side, it's free intel.
Not trolling. Average starting salary for an SDET is 58k according to Google and I was making well below average. I was making barely above starting salary after seven years, my yearly raises didn't even keep up with inflation. I made 30k more in my first full year of corrections with the optional overtime I worked than my last year as a tester. I can provide plenty of details for each job.
I was a full stack developer for 5 years and an SDET for the next 7 and quit. I hated it. I'm a corrections officer at a maximum security prison and actually like it. I was underpaid, underappreciated, racking up credit card debt just to survive while living paycheck to paycheck. I actually had to get a second job delivering pizza. The SDET work was frustrating, stressful, disorganized, and I had no support and awful terrible team leaders and pms. This was at a large company you've probably heard of. I felt like I was in prison, now I actually am and I'm so much happier. I have savings and retirement, great credit, tons of time off, and while certainly not appreciated, I wouldn't change a thing.
I'd love to give it a go again if I could make the same or more money, work for decent people on interesting projects, work remotely, and have the same job security. I don't think it's possible.
That's news to me. My last two real estate agents didn't send me a single house to consider. They haven't helped me determine a reasonable offer. I've been looking for 9 months and have only been to 3 properties. Thinking of just firing my realtor and doing it myself.
