codingkev··on Mealie – a self-hosted recipe manager and meal planner with a RestAPI back end
People who are interested in this may also be interested in Cooklang, a simple plain-text markdown format for recipes: https://cooklang.org/ -- doesn't get much easier than that.
codingkev··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
It assume it depends on how things are structured. If you are effectively running everything from Russia and are just using a EU corporate entity on the "frontend" with no actual business operations within the EU, that type of setup would likely be illegal in most countries.

But if you have two separate entities with clear split responsibilities things should work just fine. For example the EU-based company takes care of running the the product and contracts development services from a Russian company.

codingkev··on NYSE, Nasdaq halt trading in stocks of Russia-based companies
Without paywall https://12ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reuters.com%2Fbusi...
codingkev··on Ask HN: Moscow Exchange
Not sure what is going on there, but several Russian stocks (including ADRs and GDRs listed on the NYSE/LSE) have been suspended from trading.

codingkev··on Django: Reformatted code with Black
A little shoutout to a alternative Python formating tool https://github.com/google/yapf (developed by Google).

The built in "facebook style" formating felt by far the most natural to me with the out of the box settings and no extra config.

codingkev··on Jolie: A drop-in replacement of Django Admin
I agree. With the current state of Django admin, it is better not to build complex stuff on top of it. A few tweaks and customization here and there are fine, but anything more will likely break on Django and/or third-party package updates.

I'd like to see Django gradually redesigning parts of the Admin to allow for more modular extensibility in future versions.

codingkev··on Django Ninja – Fast Django REST Framework for Building APIs
Whats the deal with they large number of open issues an pull requests on FastAPI and SQLModel?

SQLModel 100 issues, 54 open PRs

FastAPI 903 issues, 448(!!) open PRs

I recently had to choose between Flask and FastAPI for a fresh project and went with Flask in the end, partly due to long term maintenance concerns with FastAPI.

codingkev··on Meta shares drop 20% on Q4 earnings miss, weak outlook
The last paragraph hits hard, very true.
codingkev··on Long-term visa for remote workers
Cyprus is probably the best overall deal out there right now, but it isn't the cheapest option.
codingkev··on Long-term visa for remote workers
I guess they just want well off people who leave their $$$ in the local economy for half a year. Fair enough, but not a very impressive deal.

For comparison: Georgia (the country) offers a 360 day visa free entry for almost every country out there, no paperwork required. While the standard of living in Georgia is certainly lower, the nature there is much more diverse and just many more things to do.

codingkev··on The Big Mac index: Our interactive currency comparison tool
True. In parts of Eastern Europe and in Asia, McDonalds is still considered a American premium-brand. Same goes for Starbucks and some other American chains.
codingkev··on Signal users can give a recurring monthly contribution
Early adopters got life long free access... until eventually even the 99 cents was dropped.
codingkev··on Meta shares drop 20% on Q4 earnings miss, weak outlook
Facebook is dying slowly in the developed world, that is true. However it is still growing in emerging markets. And most importantly: FB is still generating tons of cash to fund the other assets.

WhatsApp has basically zero monetization right now but billions of users. Huge potential cash cow.

Instagram still has a ton of potential for further optimized monetization. Think fully embedded 1-click buying for things like fashion, gadgets, accessories. They could take a decent cut of Shopifys business if executed right.

codingkev··on Tell HN: GitHub is down (Update: Back online now)

codingkev··on Why can't you reverse a string with a flag emoji?
Yes, this allows for easy building of flag emojis as long as you know the ISO 3166 two-letter country code.

Example: https://github.com/kennell/flagz/blob/master/flagz.py
