codexon··on Bitcoin surges to all-time high above $1,700
What you say doesn't really disprove my point. Yes you can change to a different algorithm.

But the underlying principal is the same. You require participants to spend X time in a problem with no shortcuts. Changing the problem does not allow you to bypass this issue. If you choose a problem that requires less time to calculate, you increase the probability that someone spams the network with fake data.

You either have a centralized system that can cheaply tell you if something is legitimate, otherwise this is the only way to protect a decentralized system. To my knowledge, there is no altcoin with any significant amount of use that does not use this principal. Please tell me which altcoins do not use this principal.

> For a merchant a CC transaction can take up to 30 days. A customer can initiate a charge back any time between when they txed and when they pay their bill.

Customers don't care how long a transaction takes for the merchant.

Have you ever tried selling anything for bitcoin? Nearly no one will use it even when being told of all the "benefits". They don't want to wait 30+ minutes. When they see they need to give some exchange a scan of their passport and wait 3-5 days to link their bank account, and losing the ability to do a chargeback, they never think about using Bitcoin again.

All crypto will eventually be broken. SHA-1 seemed bulletproof a few years ago, and now people are trying to phase it out.

If it becomes worth it to break bitcoin, these vulnerabilities will be used, discovered faster, and likely won't be published before someone uses it to profit off Bitcoin and crashing the price.

Bitcoin is priced this high because uneducated people expect it to replace paypal and credit cards but it will never be able to because 1 transaction take 30+ minutes and that is by design. The faster they make transactions take, the higher chance of forgery. Other crypto-currencies that attempt to have faster transactions are simply trading safety for speed.

"rapid clearing" as well. Takes a while to wait for the recommended number of confirms.
codexon··on White House rolls back protections for people in default on student loans
I'm trying to think about how one can profit from this bubble popping through the stock market but I just don't see it really popping. You can't really default on student loans and the government can garnish your wages.

codexon··on Ask HN: Why is the community so negative towards blockchain technology?
What neutron boy said. If you don't wait 5-6 confirmations, it could be a fake transaction.

And I can spend money I get from Paypal as soon as I get it. I don't have to wait 1 hour.

codexon··on Ask HN: Why is the community so negative towards blockchain technology?
Regarding bitcoin, the main problem is that a lot of people have large amounts of bitcoin horded from early days and they tend to be biased and start spamming forums about how great it is as it will make them very rich if the adoption increases. This is despite there being very major flaws with the system.

As someone that has actually tried to sell things with bitcoin, there are major flaws with it, and they will never be fixed because these problems are inherent to blockchains. And people trying to get rich quick keep spamming forums and HN with blockchain technology X Y Z without acknowledging these problems.

1. It is really annoying to buy. You need to go out of your way to link your bank account and passport/driver's license at any major exchange, and this takes days or even weeks. You cannot buy it instantly with a credit card or paypal unless you find a shady seller with bad rates. No one wants to sell bitcoin for something that could be chargebacked.

2. No chargebacks. Good for sellers but not for buyers. People might be able to live with this if it weren't for the other 2 major problems.

3. Payment takes forever. Waiting for the recommended amount of confirms will take at least an hour?

These problems are deal-breaking and can never be fixed when using blockchain technology.

codexon··on Image hoster pushes 1.8 PB per month through Cloudflare CDN
As someone who has looked into deploying a DNS based CDN, I have frequently found ISPs ignoring TTL.

Routers handle bgp updates much faster. Anycast routing is much more superior to geolocation which gives a completely incorrect location as high as 10% of the time. Anycast ips are also the best way to handle DDoS attacks. Attackers can easily shut down ips listed in DNS while people's ISP and browser repeatedly try to access the same dead IP for hours.

If DNS was an acceptable option, I would have gone with that instead of paying a CDN for an anycast solution.

These are all from my personal observations, they are not something I just heard from "ISP/networking people".

codexon··on Image hoster pushes 1.8 PB per month through Cloudflare CDN
I never said you can't use dns on top of anycast.
codexon··on Image hoster pushes 1.8 PB per month through Cloudflare CDN
If anycast TCP didn't work, then cloudflare wouldn't exist. DNS is not sufficient. It takes forever to handle downtime because ISPs don't respect TTL.
codexon··on Image hoster pushes 1.8 PB per month through Cloudflare CDN
Building your own CDN these days requires you to own a large ip block and ASN, and colo at several locations so the DC will actually bother routing to you, in order to deploy anycast.

Certainly too expensive for a small deployment which is why people buy from CDNs instead of setting up their own.

If it was as easy as just doing dns geolocation (which is awful due to geolocation failing and ISP caching), few people would bother buying from CDNs.

codexon··on Image hoster pushes 1.8 PB per month through Cloudflare CDN
The solution is really simple, don't host images through a CDN. Though it might not be as fast, it will be way cheaper.

I'm really suprised they didn't look at all the stories of people before trying to start image or video hosts on Cloudflare and getting booted, as if all the other image hosts were too stupid to use Cloudflare for $200/month instead of paying CDNs tens of thousands a month.

codexon··on Why Angular 2 Switched to TypeScript
It doesn't amaze me at all. Before tooling was very poor with no autocomplete so using a typed language meant you had to type maybe 20% more (and cluttering the code) on top of having to add everything to a struct in exchange for catching runtime type errors.

Now with type inference and intelligent autocomplete, these features add back efficiency to the point of making them as fast, if not faster to develop non-enterprise sized programs.

codexon··on So Many Research Scientists, So Few Openings as Professors
I find that the people that are best at research (and thus most likely to get tenure) are usually very poor teachers.

Usually they are so good at their subject that they tend to skip steps in their explanations and forget how difficult a certain concept is and expect everyone to breeze through it.

Unfortunately, universities optimize for research rather than teaching.

codexon··on Where have all the iOS games gone?
Saying there are 2 million apps for iOS doesn't mean it is popular for app buyers. It just means it is popular for app developers.

I don't understand, what other evidence do you need that these websites are being used for ddos attacks?

Cloudflare is not an official government entity. As a business you have the right to refuse service to anyone. Refusing these websites service is not the same as being thrown in jail.

I would say Discord is missing 2 crucial features that prevent it from replacing old software like IRC for large chat communities.

1) offline mode

2) different names for each server

Bitbucket is really far behind.

You can't search the code inside a repository, and the back and forward buttons on the browser don't even work correctly. Can't view a single file history either and it is probably missing a lot more.
