codewithcheese··on DigitalOcean has the worst reviews I've ever seen
This is enough to turn me off, even if these reviews are mostly from fraudsters who the AI cutoff. Hosting on a platform that attracts this type of user increases my risk. Either due to being cutoff myself or stuff like bad IP ranges, excessive ID verification.

I feel sorry for DO, they've built a great product but servicing the bottom end of the market seems harder and less rewarding than experienced by major or niche cloud providers.

codewithcheese··on Ask HN: Do you self-host your database?
Slack used to partition their databases per workspace (customer) and then moved away from it. The "Disadvantages" section lists reasons not to do that. https://slack.engineering/scaling-datastores-at-slack-with-v...

Two disadvantages that stand out for me are:

1. You must be able to scale the database up to your biggest customer and down to the your smallest this can be increasingly difficult to provision.

2. You are stuck with customers being isolated and makes it much harder to develop features that cut across a group of customers.

That has worked for me before. A company which explicitly said they do not process cancellations via support form or email. I sent an email saying I wish to cancel and I consider the email reasonable notification and I will chargeback any further charges. They cancelled the account.

So happy (because cue is a great solution) and surprised (it's niche atm) to see cue mentioned!

I invite readers to try the cue/Kubernetes tutorial, its inspired: https://github.com/cuelang/cue/blob/v0.2.2/doc/tutorial/kube...

codewithcheese··on Building an app I don't want to ship
fwiw balena has a "public url" feature. still host your app on your raspberry pi and balena will give you a public url that proxies to your Pi. Simple for sharing apps with friends and family on other networks. Let's hope it doesn't make it to front page HN though >_<

full disclosure: I work for balena as a backend engineer

codewithcheese··on Physicist creates N95-type respirators using cotton candy machine
Yep it seems the public did not understand people have different size and shape faces until we all started wearing masks.

Just by looking at some masks you can guess which gender the were design by/for, but they are advertised as one size fits all.

codewithcheese··on OptaPlanner – constraint solver for optimizing planning and scheduling problems
I also work at balena and often have a drifting non-24 hour sleep pattern, the schedule is generated once a week for the following week. You are free to change your working hours when ever you like and when the scheduler next runs it will take your preference into account.

So if go nocturnal you can shift your work hours to the night and the scheduler will try its best. But there is another constraint which is your colleagues work hours, your hours should have some overlap with theirs so that the schedule is "solvable"

codewithcheese··on We need more video games that are social platforms first, games second
>just because social by itself doesn't drive retention and acquisition enough: you need something else for players to do to have fun while they're also having fun socializing.

that's also why people like to drink, or do anything else while being social :)

I think we have not even mastered being social AFK without playing a game!

AFK = away from keyboard, i prefer that over IRL (in real life) since being at the computer is still real life

codewithcheese··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
I think the issue is we expect Ubuntu to not only design features for common folk but also have an easy to use solution for the type of tech literate people that Linux attracts.

They have prioritized snaps but how have they made life easier for those of us running "mission critical" software?

codewithcheese··on Linkalot: A web-based inbox for your links
I've seen many services like this come and go. As great as some of them are, having to trust a 3rd party with a full text archive of your complete web history is not a good value proposition. Not only due to privacy but also longevity, I don't want my archive to depends on this company remaining honest while also becoming successful enough to be around 10-20 years.
codewithcheese··on Linkalot: A web-based inbox for your links

codewithcheese··on Linkalot: A web-based inbox for your links
Thanks for sharing your flow/idea. If understand correctly here are the PROS and CONS.

PROS

- full text search

- privacy: save only what you want

- save webpage has OK rendering

- easy backup using backup software

CONS

- need to save manually and specify directory/file name

- no screenshot. (no screenshot in search results)

- save webpage not 100% accurate

- requires additional backup solution

codewithcheese··on Linkalot: A web-based inbox for your links
I think many of us wish for and have considered developing an open source, local archive of the websites we visit. We want full text search, full page screenshots, good privacy (dont archive sensitive sites). We might wish for p2p encrypted syncing between devices.

Since we wish for this, I presume its been attempted many times.

My questions is my humble hacker news readers? Can any one provide a run down of the existing open source solutions and their features/pros/cons or simply which they prefer?

codewithcheese··on Deep Borehole Disposal
I'm surprised people advocate in favor of nuclear energy when waste disposal is still an unresolved issue. Even if it's a modern reactor that has much less waste, it still needs to be safely handled for generations. If modern reactors are successful and their usage scales up, well that is more waste.

Both the state governments of Nevada and New Mexico have pushed back on long term storage plans, and the federal government appears to have no current solution.

codewithcheese··on When good ideas make bad business
If you don't know how to monetize, you need investors...duh :) Then you can spend some millions working it out! And if you still cant monetize make sure one of your investors is deeply in the hole on this investment and you control the voting shares and make them buy you out.
