AFAIK just big tuna is expensive, like a large whole fish. What you get in the cans are small tuna.
codesuela··on PrivacyGrade: Grading the Privacy of Smartphone Apps
they actually just rate whether the App permissions match the users expectations.

codesuela··on OkCupid’s Unblushing Analyst of Attraction
Yes if the percentage of extremists relative to the size of the whole organisation is minuscule (there are 1.7 BILLION muslims). Not to mention the muslim community (if there is such a thing) is much more diverse then the KKK.

This is like saying that because there is a KKK that all white people are racist.

codesuela··on The vanishing, underappreciated prank call

codesuela··on Show HN: Automatically convert a website to Android and iOS
Is it possible to use getUserMedia on iOS with your app?
codesuela··on Google Search/Web history disable does nothing for privacy
I think blackmail/extortion would be a more realistic scenario. As you correctly stated disabling the Web History is probably a futile defense against law enforcement agencies of western countries but think about all the dictatorships or otherwise strongly authoritarian regimes that are the norm for most of the world. As Google pulled from the Chinese market AFAIK they are probably not as receptive to warrants from there. Then there are also most of the African countries and many Asian countries with a high degree of corruption, low to no political freedom and/or freedom of speech. Not to forget the Arab countries where staying logged in while a third party has access to your PC and pulls up your long term search history and figures out that you are gay and you're stoned to death because of that.

FYI there is also Disconnect.me (Open Source see Github) and the EFF Privacy Badger (also Open Source)
codesuela··on Hacker Who Helped Disrupt Cyberattacks Is Allowed to Walk Free
The article tries to frame him like a noble hacker who turned to the good side but in fact he remains a backstabbing snitch. Does anyone here have respect for what he did?
codesuela··on T-Mobile USA storing passwords in clear?
Even if only the database is compromised it is still worth trying to find the key to decrypt all passwords whereas cracking a salted 10000 rounds of scypt or bcrypt hash is just not feasible unless you're the NSA on the hunt for Edward Snowden
codesuela··on Ask HN: Are some signup CAPTCHAs becoming a bit ridiculous (yes you HN)?
are you using TOR or any other IP masking solution? The more reCaptchas get solved or requested by a particular IP the harder they become, so if you are behind a IP that has been used for solving/requesting a lot of reCaptchas it is close to impossible to get a readable one (took me about 80 tries till I got one right when I used TOR). I don't know what exactly determines this difficulty but it is definitely there and Google talks about it here: http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.de/2013/10/recaptcha-ju...

codesuela··on Responding to the Explosion of Student Interest in Computer Science [pdf]
exactly on point in my humble opinion, people who are in it soley for the money will probably end up in these enterprise (Java comes to mind) jobs where it is not looked down uppon if you don't code in youre spare time.

And I don't mean to judge, the latter gtoup may have a healthier job-hobby-life relationship than me.

codesuela··on Responding to the Explosion of Student Interest in Computer Science [pdf]
this is a perfect illustration of why people protest the Google Shuttles in SF
codesuela··on Introducing Anonymous Login and an Updated Facebook Login
Good news there is actually such a thing, it's called XPrivacy. It let's you restrict permissions that apps claim they absolutely require and will feed spoofed data to them. http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-xprivacy-...
codesuela··on Introducing Anonymous Login and an Updated Facebook Login

codesuela··on Vkontakte Founder Flees Russia
I think I mixed up Telegram and Threema so my bad and thanks for the correction/reply.
codesuela··on Vkontakte Founder Flees Russia
you shouldnt trust closed source software also there are numerous complaints about their security model. See http://www.cryptofails.com/post/70546720222/telegrams-crypta... for example. Why not use an open source, cross device alternative? https://www.surespot.me/
codesuela··on Vkontakte Founder Flees Russia
how much of Facebook can you zero out before a sysadmin detects it? Probably not enough to matter, especially if there are backups which would lead to a headache for the Ops team but not much more.

codesuela··on GCHQ and NSA Targeted Private German Companies
Being German I'd argue that a problem is that Germany relies on the US to conduct intelligence for them and hence ignores the fact that the NSA is violating the rights of it's citizens on a massive scale.
codesuela··on Mozilla situation worsens as three board members call it quits

If I read this right, the perpetrators used Facebook and other social networks to trick kids into sending them sexual pictures. How is it a website which allows for this to happen still operational? Won't somebody think of the children!

> None of minorities that actually live on Ukraine see a big problem in Svoboda and Pravy Sektor, the side that cry about is Kremlin.

how about being careful with absolute statements. Pretty sure the largest Ukrainian minority, the ethnic Russians are pretty worried. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russians_in_Ukraine

Also nice that you mention the Pravy Sektor. Check out their vKontakte page: http://vk.com/album-62043361_00. Nothing to be worried about I guess.

codesuela··on [dead]
Wait so are you saying the Anschluss was involuntary and Austrians didn't openly welcome Hitler?
codesuela··on [dead]
Was just about to post this. These are your "peaceful" pro western "unity" activists: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svoboda_(political_party)

Being German it is especially disgusting how the German government is supporting the far right nationalists who have close ties to the German NPD (the facist party of Germany).

A few highlights from their stances:

* Criminal prosecution for “Ukrainophobia”[51]

* Criminalization of public promotion of abortions or calls for abortions (by introducing a fine for doing so)[96]

* The restoration of the Soviet practice of indicating ethnic origin on passports and birth certificates[40][51]

* Proportional representation on executive bodies of ethnic Ukrainians, on the one hand, and national minorities, on the other[40][51][98]

* Ukraine should again re-acquire tactical nuclear weaponry[2]

Also

> On 23 February 2014, following the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, the law on regional languages was abolished, making Ukrainian the sole state language at all levels.[102]

and

> In 2004, party leader Tyahnybok was expelled from the Our Ukraine parliamentary faction for a speech calling for Ukrainians to fight against a "Muscovite-Jewish mafia."[32][40] Svoboda advisor Yuriy Mykhalchyshyn established a "‘Joseph Goebbels Political Research Centre" in 2005, later changing "Joseph Goebbels" to "Ernst Jünger."[2] Mykhalchyshyn wrote a book in 2010 citing works by Nazi theorists Ernst Röhm, Gregor Strasser and Goebbels.[40][87][107] Elsewhere Mykhalchyshyn referred to the Holocaust as a "period of Light in history".[108]

anyway I guess I must be part of the Russian Propaganda machine for quoting from Wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svoboda_(political_party)

Also I wanted to add I'm not pro Russia either. If you wrongfully assumed that you should check your own ideology because you don't have to take up one of two sides.

Personally I consider this a loose loose for Ukraine which is a shame.
