coderguy123··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
Yes sure N95s are better but they are so hard to keep on for long time for me since I wear glasses. I finally found a comfortable one made by Aegle, I think, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere.
coderguy123··on Ask HN: OCR framework for extracting formatted text?
I hate to post my own app but it does do part of what you ask and it does it locally. Nothing is sent to any server.

https://www.dizzybits.com/Photoplex

It does on-device text recognition on your photos, stores on local SQLite database and lets you full text search.

coderguy123··on Microsoft Acquires Xamarin
MS wanted to buy Xamarin way back. Xamarin held back. I remember some comment to this effect from Miguel. Now that .Net Core looks awesome and will work with LLVM backend. Wouldn't it just another step for MS to create what Xamarin's core product is. I think Xamarin realized this and gave in. their IPO dream shattered.

coderguy123··on Mono 3.2.7 is out
rdio is using the xamarin tools for ios and android.

mvc + mono website on linux success story - i haven't seen one.

coderguy123··on Has Microsoft Gone Nuts?
I don't know guys, I just picked up dell venue 8 pro. this thing is nice. the whole Metro things works really well and it is fast and smooth. The quality of games/apps I am seeing is already better than my kid's Nexus 7 (long way from ipad tho). If they market this thing right, I can see it(windows tablets in general) gain some hold in pure tablet world.
coderguy123··on LINQ Ruined My Favorite Interview Question
isn't .ToList() part of linq too. technically the first solution is also using Linq. would be interesting to make them implement sort algorithm too.
coderguy123··on LINQ Ruined My Favorite Interview Question
text.Split(' ').Where(x=>!string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(x)).GroupBy(x => x).Select(x => new { word = x.Key, count = x.Count() }).OrderByDescending(x => x.count).Select(x=>x.word).Take(10).ToArray();
coderguy123··on My startup is Microsoft-based, here's why
MSDN subscription(for work) comes with Azure hours. I can run 6 768MB linux VPS for free. sure I will use MS.
coderguy123··on The Internet Just Made Microsoft Kill a Car for a Faster Horse
Someone told me that is a mis-quote, Henry ford never said that. But it is a perfect mis-quote.
coderguy123··on Nginx for Developers: An Introduction
try this:

https://github.com/NancyFx/Nancy/wiki/Hosting-Nancy-with-Ngi...

it worked perfectly for me on digitalocean

coderguy123··on Buying the new MacBook Air
Fantastic customer service experience. Apple,Amex and costco should get together and make it all about customers instead of about shareholders.
coderguy123··on Fertile Ground
How can this be sustainable? all this fragmentation/versions - iOS new >=7 and <7, all different versions of android, windows 8 metro etc etc. how many different platform specific versions are these service providers like say pandora suppose to create?

I feel like unless the app is taking advantage of some inherent hardware capability of the phone/tablet everything should eventually be HTML5.

coderguy123··on Humans vs. Microsoft Excel: The Quest For Smart Tools
being very heavy excel keyboard shortcut user, assumed it wouldn't be the same in mac. never tried it.
coderguy123··on Humans vs. Microsoft Excel: The Quest For Smart Tools
Having worked in nyc financial world, I can say excel is here to stay - at least for foreseeable future. Heck, the only reason I have windows running in parallel in my MBA is excel. We use to have what we called "excel test" for all quants and analyst positions. We use to QA our excel sheets just like any other software application. I am surprised that many companies don't do that - it only makes sense.
coderguy123··on WWDC 2013 Keynote
thanks, works perfectly.
coderguy123··on AngularJS Learning Resources
Good to know
coderguy123··on AngularJS Learning Resources
if you think devs working on these framework don't understand client side javascript/HTML framework on its own and need to be explained for their particular framework, may be they outta be not writing code at all.

Also, another thing that bothers me about MS is that they hide so much real HTML/javascript from devs with visual basic like facade called webforms that MS devs don't get into a new platform unless they see a document like "Angular js for .net" title.

coderguy123··on AngularJS Learning Resources
Who cares what the backed is, as long as you are getting data using xhr, angular js and HTML is same.
coderguy123··on Snapchat close to raising $100 million
these valuations just don't make any sense.
coderguy123··on AngularJS Learning Resources
"AngularJS For .Net Developers"

I don't get that. Is HTML different in Microsoft world?

coderguy123··on Are coders worth it?
IT/developer scene in big NYC banks is even worse. People with no experience faking up resume get business analyst/QA position cramming some basic skills in few weeks and they are paid $55/hr for doing nothing. This cannot last, can it?
coderguy123··on Show HN : 7 Minutes Workout app for iOS (weekend project)
very cool. will try it out tonight.
coderguy123··on Vesper app
I just don't get this app. There are thousand alternatives cheaper or free.
coderguy123··on The doctors give me 30 days to live, each post is potentially my last
i agree. at first, didn't even realize it is translation.
