codemonkeymike··on Bioluminescent trees as an alternative to electric lighting
I heard on NPR they are trying to bring back the American Chestnut, which is being killed by a fungus from Asia. To be able to plant this genetically modified tree outside of test beds will take 5-10 years in just regulation issues alone. So even if they made this bioluminecent tree tomorrow (Which in itself is impossible) we wouldn't see these on the side of the rode for another 10+ years.
codemonkeymike··on How to program computers (kOS)
Yes people can change that is true, and I don't think anyone goes into a CS or IT program thinking this will be the type of code they write. The skills really are to think differently about code, and functional programming. Two things that are not taught in American universities(Or companies for that matter). So I feel like if I were to choose K as the language for my project which I expect to hire others to work on, I would have to build a K community in my area just to have the talent to work on my project.
codemonkeymike··on How to program computers (kOS)
I was thinking the same thing myself. Like your code may be 1/10th the length but you need to find someone with a seemingly rare skill set to maintain it.

codemonkeymike··on Isn't it time that Cyclists had Indicators like Cars
Anything that gets more cyclist to signal is a win in my book.
codemonkeymike··on I hate working hard
Have you ever been tested for ADHD?

If you do have ADHD you can seek guidance from ADHD experts, who can tell you how to manage it without drugs.

codemonkeymike··on Unicode Text Converter
Continued use of this would be a good way of making me not use HN.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: What's your favourite sci-fi/fantasy book?
"Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" As someone who simply cant sit down and read a book this was the first book I have ever read and reread. First comedic release, is littered everywhere in the book. Recurring jokes for those who pay attention to detail are little nuggets of gold. There are social commentaries that ring true today. Lastly all the characters are believably absurd.
codemonkeymike··on Resignation from the pkg-systemd maintainer team
Makes me want to go into OSS development...
codemonkeymike··on Can I really do it?
Its best to learn first what Algorithms are used were and why. Almost every algorithm has its place, something I wish I knew before I took my first programming class. This may seem like some trivia but employers like to know that you know what solution to use for a problem. Also it will spark your interest for actually programming a solution. Then just try to implement the most mundane Algorithms, like bubble sort, by only reading what it does, not the solution.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: When, if ever, will 128-bit CPUs become mainstream?
ElectronCharge already gave a good answer, but I would like to add a little extra information. There already exists 64bit only processors, as in they have no 32bit instructions or registers. The reason they didn't take off in the consumer market is because they simply cannot run 32bit programs or any existing consumer operating system. Intel sells these 64bit only machines to labs were they can actually make use of the full memory addressing, as in putting terabytes of data into RAM, and also only need 64bit operations.

The 256bit and 512bit registers and instructions are reserved for specialty hardware, IE graphics cards were you need to do floating point arithmetic.

One more aside, the reason we call 64bit processors AMD64 is because AMD subverted Intel by releasing an architecture which had both 32bit and 64bit instructions, while Intel was creating 64bit only processors.

Also I love this question, because it was the first question I asked in my kernel development class, but the answer I got was "all will be explained in due time"

codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: What's your favorite TED Talk?

codemonkeymike··on Remove Ex-Mode from Neovim
Search Neovim in the Hacker news search, there was a lengthy discussion less then a year ago here.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: If you're 20 years old, how would you invest $100k?
Buy a rental property such as a duplex in an up in coming neighborhood and live in the landlords suite.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: I don't have CS and feel flustered
Good idea, I'd like to add that after you get some know the basics of C to pick up K&R and do the examples. Also go to the local city/uni library and pick up an old book on UNIX utilities (AWK,SED,GREP etc)
codemonkeymike··on The Deadliest Animal in the World
Read the book during a comparative politics class, so yes I have read a fair number of critical articles. That being said I have also read a fair number of scholarly articles in support of the angle that Jared Diamond was getting at. No one is right always, that is why you must be objective and read critical peer reviewed articles.
codemonkeymike··on The Deadliest Animal in the World
I too read the book, amazing incite so much so that it seem almost obvious. For those who are too lazy to read, it also comes in documentary form!
codemonkeymike··on Learn C and build your own Lisp
I had made a lisp interpreter using this book I found in my schools library. http://www.amazon.com/Data-Structures-Advanced-Approach-Usin...
codemonkeymike··on GrubHub Raises $192M Pricing IPO Above Marketed Range
They may be on Seamless or Grubhub (both the same company) so that their business may be noticed in the crowded NYC delivery market, but when they can offer a +25% reduction in delivery price by having their own site you will see people using GrubHub as a directory not an ordering platform. What I am getting at is that it is not a sustainable business model, especially because chain restaurants which make up most of the growth in restaurants can afford to make and market their own ordering platform. Also for a small business outside of a "hip" city there is little traction for a service which creates bad faith with customers by jacking up prices, which I've seen can make some people really angry.
codemonkeymike··on GrubHub Raises $192M Pricing IPO Above Marketed Range
I looked into GrubHub to do online ordering for my mothers deli, after seeing the roughly 25% fee I can safely say that many small business will look elsewhere... eventually.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: Should I be looking for an internship or a job?
I have set up my scheduled to fit into a 35ish hour work week. A full 8 hours for 3 days and about 5 hours 2 days per week. Which gets me pretty close to full time.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: Should I be looking for an internship or a job?
Well between rent and car insurance I need some money, as I don't want to go an ask for help from my parents(I'm 22).
codemonkeymike··on One of my domains could be worth a lot – what's the best way to sell it?
But you will attract everyone's attention by putting it on Sedo. Rather then just parking it with a for sale sticker on it.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: Should I be looking for an internship or a job?
Id rather have the security of having some sort of job placement or something that puts me leaps and bounds above other job applicants to any company I wish to work for. There's always time for side projects on the weekend.
codemonkeymike··on Why do ISPs show speed in bits and not in bytes? It's confusing
My networking professor who worked for AT&T for years, before and after it was sold and up into the internet age. His explanation was that the phone companies (more like phone company) had existed since the late 1800's before computers, and even when they built and bought the first computers and computer networks bytes were not a unit of measurement. So the phone companies network the phone companies rules.

Edit: I'd like to add that the first networks were with dumb devices on the periphery, aka your phones, and smart devices in the core, aka AT&T computer controlled routers. There was no concept of Bytes in that network.

codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: What under $100 item would you recommend everyone buy?
I was going to say AeroPress! The most amazing way to make coffee. So I will add if you have an AeroPress you should get a temperature controlled water warmer and Blue Mountain coffee.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: how do you commercialize something like 2048?
Have each number tile replaced with a product, EX: Trident pays $X to have its product be the 2 tile or each tile is a different Trident product.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: Why do ATMs run on Windows?
Atm's, from what I know, are generally not connected to wifi. Most are directly wired to either DSL or to a modem making it the end users issue(aka the person who owns the property which the ATM is on).
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: How much did John Carmack make?
To jump on the pure speculation band wagon, I've herd from 1-5% for CTO's after 8 digit VC investments. Jason Roberts (Co-host of techzing) once said he was offered >1% <10% (but more towards the low side) equity for a CTO position after series A funding in Uber.
codemonkeymike··on Ask HN: Best GNU/Linux laptop as of March 2014?
I too have a T430, and love it. Can't imagine that a lighter laptop would be able to achieve 8-9 hours(largest battery 9 cell i think) in a text editor with a 14 inch screen. I also swapped out the HDD for an SSD and removed the DVD and put the HDD in it(they make special caddies for HDD in DVD drive) which I take out sometimes because I like to thow my laptop around and dont want to worry about breaking the HDD. Myne was $820 from lenovo. Edit: also runs Linux Mint like a champ, all hot keys keys(FN) work, but I too get the problem with putting my computer in sleep mode for more then a month.
