codeisawesome··on The Shadowy Business of International Education
Way to paint with broad brush strokes!
codeisawesome··on Kubernetes is our generation's Multics
Is there a networking-for-developers style course that you would recommend?
codeisawesome··on RabbitMQ Streams Overview
I was recently thinking about this: let’s say you built a chrome extension and wants to collect some basic usage analytics (with explicit user consent and knowledge, while preserving privacy) - you could batch-send activities at intervals to a REST-style API, but would be nicer to handle as a stream (eg to respond in real-time somehow).
codeisawesome··on US companies hit by 'colossal' cyber-attack
Sounds so spooky, do say more! Do you mean Jason Bourne / John Wick shows up at the hackers’ nest?
codeisawesome··on How to Work Hard
Mods are doing a good job these days putting up two articles talking about opposite-ish viewpoints on the front page it feels very intentional and it is interesting.
codeisawesome··on Binance banned from doing business in UK
Thanks, I’ll look more deeply into this.
codeisawesome··on MIT and Harvard agree to transfer edX to ed-tech firm 2U
Hmm.. continuing education that’s more accessible seems to be the gist of it; I wouldn’t quite put that in the same bucket as this post’s headline…
codeisawesome··on MIT and Harvard agree to transfer edX to ed-tech firm 2U
So the universities have decided to monetise their own great reputations by simply selling it to a bidder?

What if those brands are compromised or back-doored by internal or external actors? Just look at the Western Digital fiasco recently. Do these wallets call home at all? Also: aren’t backups easier to make on a normal SSD?

(PS: these are my personal genuine concerns and I’m at least somewhat willing to have my mind changed: not trolling or being argumentative for entertainment)

codeisawesome··on Binance banned from doing business in UK
What is a competent and trustworthy guide for choosing a cold wallet strategy? There are many products on the market and none seem trustworthy. Is a raspberry pi kept offline with an external storage drive a good strategy? When the pi needs kernel patches etc, I’d unplug the drive in this scenario?
codeisawesome··on Linux on Chromebooks just might get me through a masters in computer science
Not to mention being on video calls with classmates / actual classes and also having a few other windows running (lets say Slack / Discord), and maybe driving a decent-resolution monitor.. these relatively basic sounding things can push the CPU/gfx memory/RAM of even higher-end hardware to their limits! Especially if you choose to / need to run all these together and multi-task. That might partially be an indictment of software performance, though.
codeisawesome··on Europe is now a corporate also-ran. Can it recover its footing?
I have no idea why you are so heavily downvoted for giving a rational response countering with your own experiences…?
codeisawesome··on Highlights of new technologies introduced at WWDC 2021
But then why make iPads so insanely, ridiculously powerful?!
codeisawesome··on An incomplete list of skills senior engineers need, beyond coding
This is an excellent list. I can think of so many experiences where I’d have fared better knowing/following this advice instead of my wrong instincts at the time.
codeisawesome··on Why we should end the data economy
If one were to buy that book (or even visit the link) - some new interesting ‘data points’ have now been collected ;)

Actually no, not a wink, it’s terrifying :D D:

codeisawesome··on Algorithmic Thinking: A Problem-Based Introduction (2020)
Just started reading it… very hopeful from the first pages that this might be the book I’ve been waiting for.
codeisawesome··on Court orders WhatsApp to suspend users sharing pirated movie
Are attachments (like photo and video contents) E2E encrypted on WhatsApp?
codeisawesome··on Show HN: Flashcards to learn AWS skills
This is an excellent idea and I look forward to browsing it when you start! Also as you’ve already conceptualised as a wiki - don’t worry about organising it perfectly, you’ll never figure it out yourself. Let the community (which you will bootstrap by contributing your knowledge) do that for you. Oh and just “TheDevopsWiki” is a great name.
codeisawesome··on Selling Tiny Internet Projects for Fun and Profit
I appreciate how open the dev is being and I like the article! But I have a moral annoyance towards username squatting, especially by folks who don’t actually participate in the network…
codeisawesome··on Apple sued for terminating account with $25k worth of apps and videos
> Apple also advertise the fact that consumers can keep their purchased files in the cloud for later download. And when using certain settings on iOS and Fire devices, Apple will automatically remove from a device content and apps that haven’t been accessed in a while, requiring the user to download them once more.

Oh gosh, there’s a huge problem on iOS & iPadOS with this. Files app and Books app (and even Photos) will prune files from the local file system to save space. This is alright in itself, but the user has very little to no control over which files are selected algorithmically for this process (there is no “never prune THIS file/folder” option). What’s much worse, there are no SLAs on how quickly the download will occur. I don’t know if it’s regional, but in Singapore I’ve found books app & files app never finish downloading content especially if you request for multiple files - even on WiFi & power. I work around this by storing zip files which I download and extract each time - because at least a single file might succeed downloading (higher chance of success).

This is a huge problem for someone who relies on iCloud when I need a file urgently on the go and all I have is 4G.

codeisawesome··on Stranded sailor allowed to leave abandoned ship after four years
Even more surprising that there’s one situation still ongoing:

> Meanwhile, at the Iranian port of Assaluyeh, 19 mostly Indian crew members of the bulk carrier Ula are on hunger strike after their vessel was abandoned by its owners in July 2019.

codeisawesome··on Silicon Valley stays on top as tech salaries climb across U.S.
> Arguably if you need to prep that much it might not be a good fit. YMMV.

Dear candidate - do not pay attention to this person’s comment. This behaviour is called gatekeeping (not withstanding the backbone-free cop-out at the end with the “ymmv”). It does not account for varied life circumstances & starting points. Prep for as long you need to - and more importantly - want to. In the interview the duration of prep won’t matter.

codeisawesome··on Abundant Capital
IMO (please prove me wrong! There will be info in your proof I'd like to know...) - founder immigration is the greatest bottleneck for this capital to be invested.

A startup founder visa will more than take care of this 'dry powder' and get it working to increase the US GDP. Said visa needs to have a realistic "minimum savings requirement" to come live in the US & start a company (not the $1MM or even $500k required by EB-5 that put it out of reach for most founders especially on the younger side).

Said visa is a necessity because of the way human society works & the way the global order has formed. All this Capital is in the US (reserve currency). People who control it and decide how to allocate it are in the US (history). People do not like to give capital to other people who will live and use it thousands of kilometres away (oversight becomes hard).

Wishing for more tech startup founders to spring from the general US population alone is not going to solve it, and pumping all the available money into the same companies may be quite risky from a diversification perspective for the US economy.

codeisawesome··on Algorithms by Jeff Erickson
Thank you for engaging the other commenter and articulating my stance better than I could have. Also - while I have deep respect (I truthfully do) for the expertise of folks who teach this material - I have lost patience for their patronising tones and unhelpful assumptions about the folks that might read this book and books like it.

The world needs an algorithms book that shows a modicum of humility to its readers. A book that assumes that more than simple children are reading it (incidentally, and in a puzzling contradiction - also using needlessly convoluted English to express ideas). Hopefully I can do something about that ‘one day’.

codeisawesome··on Algorithms by Jeff Erickson
IMO it’s a major waste of time to go through a book if I can’t check my solutions and be satisfied that I understood everything the instructor intended to from the problem. I won’t be investing the time into this book. Algorithms by Sedgwick instead has (third party) Solutions online.
codeisawesome··on Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store
I’m somewhat certain that the east India company, the VOC etc., had wealth surpassing many countries by the time their consolidation activities reached their peak, though. This isn’t a new phenomenon I don’t think.
codeisawesome··on Offline Algorithms in Low-Frequency Trading
Why not..? Asking because the explanation might end up helping me and also cure folks' HN addictions :D
codeisawesome··on u/DeepFuckingValue and the GameStop Reddit mania
Okay - that begins to explain the problem a bit. So people being afraid and just holding on to their newfound gains in just cash or say, T-bills - can depress the entire economy by a lack of interest in stocks. Structurally it seems a little problematic though that companies would depend so much on issuing stock to fund their operations or even growth - ideally they should be able to do that with revenue (or even debt)...
codeisawesome··on u/DeepFuckingValue and the GameStop Reddit mania
After the sell-off, there’s a lot of cash (yes even more) washing around right? It has to go somewhere, and so it will come back into securities in probably a few weeks or max, months. The value represented isn’t exactly disappearing it’s still in the ‘system’. So why is a crash in equities prices such a big deal?
