codegrappler··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
I tend to have a more optimistic view of life and I have 3 kids. I want to support a world that makes things better for them. I’ve always found the “make less people” claim overly patronizing. It’s fine if you don’t want kids, but the kids today will be running the nursing homes, fixing the infrastructure and running the country when we’re retired. I want to help raise this next generation with good moral values and work ethics. I should be able to make that choice.
codegrappler··on The Weight I Carry (2019)
I’m learning to become more empathetic to people with naturally low metabolisms and thyroid issues. I know a young girl that went from being very slim to noticeably overweight once she developed a thyroid issue. Feed two people a standard American diet and you could end up with substantially different weight outcomes.
codegrappler··on The day I discovered that Apple Maps is Kind of Good now
You know, the one where you tripped and chipped your tooth in the fourth grade…
codegrappler··on Orchestral musicians have unusually challenging jobs
Having spoken with a few professional orchestra muscicians, this doesn’t appear to be true. They have honed their craft enough that they only need one practice before any given performance.
codegrappler··on Times are great for programmers now. How does it end?
Was coming here to say this. Every time a more sophisticated system has been built to replace a simpler one, it requires MORE programmers, not less.
codegrappler··on Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life
I can attest to this. In my 30’s with kids and suddenly women with well behaved kids are more attractive to me. You can find attraction in qualities as much as looks.
codegrappler··on Ask HN: How do you take care of yourself?
He has leadership material written all over him.
codegrappler··on How to Think: The Skill You’ve Never Been Taught
If you are American I would recommend “Democracy in America” by Alexis de Tocqueville. Very easy to read and has some really mind opening lines. “Americans are cartesians without ever having read Descartes” still sticks with me to this day and I last read it over ten years ago.
codegrappler··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
Your wife is talented. This is a cool idea. Added to my list of gifts to buy for folks.
codegrappler··on 20 year study of global wealth demolishes the myth of ‘trickle-down’
I guess I’m not surprised that a bunch of folks who have made a career out of advising politicians on income inequality….discovered income inequality in their study.

The two questions in my mind are:

1. Should we trust the government to spend the money more wisely than the folks who earned it? Or said another way, how do you combat the almost inevitable corruption you see with large government spending? 2. What will incentivize people to work at insane rates if the vast majority of their income and wealth is taxed? Would I be willing to put in the long hours and sacrifices usually required to work up to a $1m+ salary if it’s taxed at a 90% rate?

codegrappler··on Job vacancies surge past one million in new record
It certainly feels that way. Businesses can’t find workers, so wages increase, costs are passed on to consumers, prices inflate…
codegrappler··on Amazon has acquired Facebook's satellite internet team
I think it is a great thing. They could just as easily keep it all to themselves and pass it down to generations. It’s fully within their legal rights to do so.
codegrappler··on Ask HN: What software do you use to gather requirements?
This sounds awesome but very tech-heavy. Two questions:

- How big is the company? - How did you get non-tech folks onboard with this approach?

codegrappler··on Catalytic Converter Theft
This happened to me. Twice within a few weeks. Parked in a train commuter lot. I eventually had the mechanic screw some steel mesh to the bottom of my pickup to deter the thieves. Thankfully I kept comprehensive insurance on my vehicle so the out of pocket expense was $50. The insurance company did call to investigate the second time because they thought I was in on it.
codegrappler··on Newsom Misled Public About Wildfire Prevention Effort Ahead of Worst Fire Season
I forget the context but didn’t Trump talk about this a while ago? Hi
codegrappler··on Real-world CSS vs. CSS-in-JS performance comparison
For us the big win is branded sites. We have a white labeled product that is customizable for each client. No code deploys needed to add a new client. Values live in a db table and get pulled in dynamically based on the url subdomain.
codegrappler··on Wuhan lab staff sought hospital care before Covid-19 outbreak disclosed
This is from the Wall Street journal. Hardly a tinfoil hat source typically.

codegrappler··on Horses and Sparrows: The myth of 'trickle down' economics
This is the main point that I feel is constantly left out of arguments against trickle down economics. Money needs to be invested or spent to be useful. Stockpiling hordes of cash is not benefiting anyone. Wealthy individuals will invest that money into other companies and endeavors which drives more economic activity. If we tax them and give it to the government would we expect them to do the same?

Come help us make healthcare interactions better for hundred's of thousands of patients (hopefully millions in the near future!). codegrappler··on Only distributed fact-checking can keep up with democratized distribution
Totally agree. The other dimension that folks often overlook is the choice of what to fact-check. Droves of fact checkers that only ever check one side of an argument still present a bias.
codegrappler··on A Kid, a Minor Bike Accident and a $19,000 Medical Bill
And bankrupt most hospitals. It’s very common for hospitals to lose money on Medicare patients
codegrappler··on One pollster’s explanation for why the polls got it wrong
I wish I could do this better. It still scares the heck out of me to say something that could be construed as even remotely redville when I’m in navy blueville. I’m sure others feel the same way in the opposite circumstance.

Not everyone thinks that!
codegrappler··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
Was about to write this very thing. Also many people frightened that a defunded police will not be able to protect them.
codegrappler··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I think that’s true of both parties
codegrappler··on Why do printers still suck?
I picked up a Canon color laser for $180 last Black Friday. They’re way cheaper than they used to be.
