Feeling like contacting me?

email - hn (at) femto (dot) host discord - Codefined#8017

I'm pretty open to talking about anything.

codefined··on Word usage guidance and alternative terms
Sometimes avoiding those connotations are exceptionally hard, verging on impossible. In comparison, it seems a documentation change from whitelist to allowlist might just be a single find & replace away for a project.
codefined··on Ask HN: What are some good strategy games?
Played a lot of Age of Empires 2, fantastic game. Been spending more of my time playing 'Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance'[0]. It has a community lobby system over here[1] that's pretty active (over 1400 simultaneous players at time of speaking).

I got infuriated by some of Age of Empire 2s limitations (e.g. limited selection size, awful pathfinding, games tending to stalemate). The extra ~decade SupCom had seems to have helped.

The Steam version often goes on sale for a few dollars once a month or so[2].

codefined··on A campaign to make environmental destruction an international crime
It feels like it's about direct / indirect issues. If to buy a gas powered car I had to go out and shoot somebody, I doubt we'd have nearly as many cars around.

Air pollution kills 7 million people a year[0]. That's not including other forms of pollution.

I also feel nobody is arguing to cancel everything immediately. They're arguing to stop building new coal power plants when there are alternatives. They're arguing for increased taxes on companies that produce pollution so that they have motivation to reduce their external effects. Etc.

Has the generator been updated? For me (UK) it's localised to dd/mm/yyyy, as I would expect in my region.

I like that the spec uses a universal and unambiguous format. I especially like that this generator is localised to my region though.

codefined··on Authelia is an open-source authentication/authorization server with 2FA/SSO
I think it comes from the phrase "no one ever got fired for buying IBM". Here, Keycloak is the incumbent for organisations.
codefined··on List of video games considered the best
I don't understand the sentiment. Whilst it might be outdated (last game seems to be from 2017), is there any odd game that appears here? All of these are exceptionally well-renowned games.

> Ideally, each fallible function would have its own error enum to precisely capture its errors and handle them, but in practice it is too verbose and leads to using the less precise Error trait or one enum per module. The language could support this better: there are several initiatives and macros exploring this.

Definitely something I can agree with! Has your team explored any initatives / macros that seem promising? We're currently using the crate 'thiserror' but it's made our compilation times painful.

codefined··on Ask HN: Team fun event ideas during WFH?
(Self promotion) If you're looking for an alternative to Skribbl.io that has less ads you can check out a version I host[0]. It runs Scribble.rs[1] under the hood. They offer an official hosted herokuapp version here[2] but I've found it to be unreliable.

codefined··on Bad TypeScript Habits
I've been regularly trying to reduce / remove usage of `null` in various projects. Sindresorhus has some interesting discussions on the topic here[0].

codefined··on Tesla’s charging stations left other manufacturers in the dust
Presumably you have "some place" where you store your car when you're not using it. It makes sense to put a charger there, as opposed to on the block corner.
codefined··on Pyston 2.1 Is Blowing Past Python 3.8/3.9 Performance
> Pyston is a faster and highly-compatible implementation of the Python programming language. Version 2 is currently closed source, but you can find the old v1 source code under the v1.0 tag in this repository.

Yes, it does seem that it's incomplete and only documents v1 of Pyston.

codefined··on Response to “WireGuard: great protocol, but skip the Mac app”
My understanding is that WireGuard do _not_ give 30% of their donations to MacOS, so Apple are only indirectly making money from WireGuard being on their platform.

See:

> We faced rejections in submitting the app, because they decided to change their policy on the app having a link in the "About WireGuard" tool window to www.wireguard.com/donations/ (which they previously had allowed explicitly; now they want 30% or something)

codefined··on Parler Databases Disclosed
Okta is a large, enterprise identity provider. I doubt in the case of a right-wing site existing they'd give out access to that provider on purpose? Did they mess up? I can't find any details about it yet.

I took it to mean the webserver doesn't support "HTTP range requests"[0], as opposed to ranges of keys.

codefined··on URL shorteners set ad tracking cookies
I've worked with the Internet Archive to ensure continuity if I get hit by a bus or anything. A list of all items that have been uploaded to the site will be provided to them if anything happens to me.
codefined··on URL shorteners set ad tracking cookies
Hm, well I've got to work out how to get off that list! Thanks for giving me the heads up.

EDIT: I'm not sure quite how to deal with being put on ad lists. Sure, people can upload any file to our host so it's plausible that someone, at some point, has uploaded an advert. Someone could also redirect to an advert domain and we'd have no way to really deal with that unless it was reported. Ideas are welcome for solutions.

codefined··on URL shorteners set ad tracking cookies
I currently host https://femto.pw/ - A URL shortener I've kept up for ~4 years and intend to indefinitely. It doesn't do anything with regards to tracking cookies or other dark patterns. It just redirects you using a 302 redirect.

codefined··on Buttplug (Sex Toy Control Library) Hits v1 Milestone
Do you feel the progress of the project is hindered / benefitted / not effected by any stigmatism in western society? Do you ever find it hard to talk to friends / family / colleagues / strangers about this project?
codefined··on Buttplug (Sex Toy Control Library) Hits v1 Milestone
You might want to read up on 'Fallacy of Relative Privation' to see why this point of view is likely to not be helpful. A good starting point is this[0].

codefined··on How Rainbow Tables Work
Are there any archaic hashes that are built to be "slow" where this might not apply? It feels like a lot of modern slow hashes have salts built in (e.g. Bcrypt, Scrypt, Argon2) but if one didn't use a salt it would definitely still make sense to use a rainbow table against these hashes.

Is the idea that password hashes should be slow relatively new?

codefined··on AI cameras introduced in London to monitor social distancing
Anonymous cameras that just report on metrics seems like a useful capability that doesn't invade on peoples privacy.
codefined··on [dead]
Just a heads up, your platform currently seems to be giving me a 522 connection timeout issue (http://app.devo.ps/) and the homepage isn't encrypted, which when asked to 'sign up' is concerning.
codefined··on Visualize AWS Cloud Diagrams
The only service that appears to cost a flat fee is 'Amazon Neptune', which on the cheapest plan costs ~10 cents an hour or ~$70/month. I imagine all the other costs (e.g. S3, Fargate, API Gateway, CloudFront) are negligible in comparison.
codefined··on Update on Firefox Send and Firefox Notes
Yeah, pretty much. Some of the storage & networking is stolen from other projects of mine which lowers the cost significantly. Almost all of my servers for home projects come with 4TB hard drives which I never use anywhere near the full capacity of.
codefined··on Update on Firefox Send and Firefox Notes
We are self-hosted, I'd _hate_ to think of the costs of hosting this service through AWS or similar who charges for ingress / egress.

We have 5gbps of bandwidth and 12TB of storage that I've dedicated to the service (costing me ~£30/mo, so a fairly trivial sum).

I'm hoping that if we ever exceed 12TB / 5gbps, others will similarly host their own versions of the application. I've heard of half a dozen people already who have just decided to host their own.

codefined··on Update on Firefox Send and Firefox Notes
Hm, been spending a while creating a 'Firefox Send' copy, attempting to host files. Check out a new verison at:

Looking for some help if anyone can, :)

The old copy (https://femto.pw/) has been used over 100 million times and sent over 13PB of data!

codefined··on Chat server on a WiFi-enabled SD card

codefined··on Why do U.S. coins seem to be in short supply?
I believe it is implying that there is enough coins in the country for everyone. However, unequal distribution due to COVID means some specific areas are lacking.
