codedivine··on Raspberry Pi : Cheat Sheet ($25 ARM computer)
I am aware that HN discourages editing of page title. In this case, I added ($25 ARM computer) to title as otherwise the title would have made no sense to those not familiar with the Rasperry Pi.

That said, it is a tiny board (about the size of a USB stick) with 700MHz ARM11 and a Broadcom GPU with OpenGL ES 2.0 support and 1080p video decode. It will have an HDMI port and can connect to keyboards and mice and will run Linux. Should be available in November. More details here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/

codedivine··on Logging out of Facbook is not enough
Thanks for the tip! Anything equivalent for Firefox (and maybe IE and Opera too)?
codedivine··on Ask HN: What API to the physical world do you wish existed?
Reminds me of the games Achron and Braid.
codedivine··on The Patent Pledge
Companies could then protect themselves from patent lawsuits by open sourcing their code

How?

codedivine··on BlackBerry PlayBook price slashing begins: $249 and up for Rogers workers
I don't think they were afraid. My understanding is that the software was simply not ready. Also, the native email update still hasn't arrived.
codedivine··on Microsoft previews Compiler-as-a-Service software
I found a presentation here (pdf): http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/events/fs2011/ng_codenam...
codedivine··on RIM co-CEO: BlackBerry PlayBook price cuts coming
I also applied for the beta NDK a few weeks ago and got no response even though the page said they will get back in 2 business days or something.
codedivine··on Looking for true geek blood
The question is in rather poor taste.
codedivine··on Sony To Debut Android-Based PlayStation Suite SDK In November
I hope the cost (of both the SDK and publishing) is in-line with smartphone SDKs and not in the multi-thousand dollar range.
codedivine··on Is It Time for Hewlett-Packard to Go Back to the Garage?
Not a bad article, but does not add any new info or interesting analysis.
codedivine··on [dead]
It is not. Do it if you love it. Otherwise there are lots of other fields with interesting, meaningful work as well.
codedivine··on PyPy - We need Software Transactional Memory
One good read is: http://queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=1454466 "Software Transactional Memory: Why Is It Only a Research Toy?" by Cascaval et al.

I think transactional memory systems with at least some hardware support are potentially more interesting.

codedivine··on PyPy - We need Software Transactional Memory
STM sounds all nice, yet there are few implementations of STM currently that give better performance than a good serial implementation.
codedivine··on A Simple Explanation for Why HP Abandoned Palm
Indeed, I just looked at http://h30261.www3.hp.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=71087&p=irol-g...

There are 14 board members in total including Leo the CEO. Out of 13, 6 were appointed in 2011 while the board leader (Lane) was appointed at the same time as Leo Apotheker. That means out of 14, only 6 precede Leo.

codedivine··on $310 Xiaomi Phone: 1.5GHz dual-core,1G RAM,4GB ROM,480x854 4',MIUI+Android2.3.5
Coremark isn't a good benchmark. I have been benchmarking Snapdragons and Atoms myself on a variety of integer and floating point codes. I will publish them sometime soon but Atom-based netbooks came ahead of the Snapdragon based systems I had access to. I suspect this is partially because you have more memory bandwidth available in netbooks compared to mobile devices.

edit: Also, I do expect results to change quite a bit when the Krait architecture comes into play for Qualcomm.

A single-core Atom will still beat these in single threaded performance. Multi-threaded performance is a different story, but I would still not expect an outright win for these Snapdragons. However, Adreno 220 is clearly superior to the GMA 950 crap bundled with most Atoms.

The better headline is Webkit is more "Open" than Android
codedivine··on Poll: Which smartphone platform do you own and use mainly?
Pre 2 and Touchpad owner here. I, for one, am not waiting for Pre 3 because I am pretty happy with my Pre 2 as it is. And I have doubts whether HP cares about phones at all anyway.
codedivine··on Ask HN: Windows phone dev success/failure stories?
Thanks for the info! Do you have a link to your blog so that I can check for updates?
codedivine··on High number of infosec textbooks almost 100% copied, according to attrition.org
The first paragraph of the article is painful to read.
codedivine··on Poll: How much of your work time is typing code?
Do you mean "typing" code only, or does that include thinking about code too?
codedivine··on Machine Learning Fairy Dust
So, did you get engaged :)?
codedivine··on Evernote Gets $50 Million in Funding
Have you ever tried using evernote? It is much more than text files and some of it is quite sophisticated, such as automatic approximate OCR of images.

The UI/UX/API/mobile and desktop apps/backends, all of which you dispatch off without thinking, are all non-trivial to get right. The fact that evernote doesn't have too much competition right now should tell you something.

codedivine··on AMD's master plan to topple Intel - Back to the top on a radical GPU
Who would you bet on? The only other players are RIM/Blackberry and WebOS and I am not too sure how well they will hold up.
codedivine··on Brawny cores still beat wimpy cores, most of the time [pdf]
I would say a core in Opteron 6xxx series at least still fits the defintiion of a brawny core. Its more about Atom/current ARM cores type of wimpy cores that we are talking about.
codedivine··on Elop himself leaks Nokia's first Windows Phone
Which currency is that? USD? I see Nokia E7 at $429 unlocked and Nokia N8 at around $379 at amazon.com. I don't see where that high 800s and 900s is coming from, unless you are talking about a different currency.
codedivine··on Google is not your daddy: long term reliance on APIs is as bad as outsourcing
I don't think "API" is used in the same sense as what you are using it in. The author is talking about not building your business around an API offered by external service provider (eg: Google Translate, or Twitter for example) where your business is dependent upon the the external party continuing to offer that API.

The article is not about APIs of libraries.

codedivine··on Cray XK6 supercomputer smashes petaflop record
More correctly, it will smash it in the future. The system isn't shipping yet.
codedivine··on On path to riches, no sign of fluffy majors
Aah. I am doing a PhD and always feel that I should leave PhD to start a company to build something more meaningful than systems that nobody uses. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.
codedivine··on Nvidia Optimus support for Linux
I have been told that the T410 at least had an option in the BIOS to switch to the discrete card without Optimus as Lenovo did implement a hardware multiplexer in addition to Optimus. T420s might also do this, you should check. One of the Dell Latitudes also implemented a hardware multiplexer in addition to Optimus and thus people have been able to get the Nvidia card running under Linux though without switching ability (but thats still vastly better than no card).

I have been waiting for AMD Llano based laptops as I will be able to run them without any worries about switchable graphics. I need OpenCL and OpenGL support for work purposes.
