codechicago277··on xAI joins SpaceX
We’re at a point where propaganda is so much more powerful than reality that the people in power literally can’t tell the difference. When your source of ethics is the stock price, little details like physical impossibility stop seeming relevant.
codechicago277··on xAI joins SpaceX
Elon Musk is a genius, but he’s a financing genius. Look at the long history he has of false promises supporting financing deals between his companies and you’ll see this for what it is, a cash injection and a lie to justify it. He did the same thing with a fake solar roof demo when Tesla bought the almost bankrupt Solar City. He also shifted resources from Tesla and SpaceX to support X in the early days. Even founding xAI outside of Tesla, when so much of its valuation was built on its AI capabilities, was questionable.

codechicago277··on Eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece (2023)
Dark Sky was one of my favorite apps. MyRadar Pro is probably the best replacement, but it’s missing some of the core features.

Off topic but did you find anything interesting? I spent a few days researching Holodomor and was surprised how poorly understood it still is even today, and badly reported at the time. Good propaganda case study. There’s a dramatic film about the reporting too, Mr. Jones (2019).
codechicago277··on Ask HN: Should "I asked $AI, and it said" replies be forbidden in HN guidelines?
The problem is that the AI answer could just be wrong, and there’s another step required to validate what it spit out. Sharing the conversation without fact checking it just adds noise.
codechicago277··on Hacker News Headlines (game)
Could split the stories into buckets and then randomly sample from each bucket. Most stories are small, so they’re currently overrepresented in the sampling.

I think you need to adjust the variation of scores, I got 1650 actually guessing, then realized most of the scores were low and got 1800 by just always guessing 239
codechicago277··on What Is Complexity in Chess?
I had this idea of drilling games against an engine with a set depth evaluation, since beating a depth 1 engine should teach simpler concepts than level 4.

I vibe coded this into a browser app, but the evaluation is slow around depth 5: https://camjohnson26.github.io/chess-trainer/

It’s a classic at this point but David Blaine held the record for a while and gave a fantastic TED talk on his process: https://www.ted.com/talks/david_blaine_how_i_held_my_breath_...
codechicago277··on AI vs. Professional Authors Results
I had similar results, and story 4 is so trope heavy I wonder if it’s just an amalgamation of similar stories. The human stories all felt original, where none of the AI ones did.
codechicago277··on LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises
The answer to “why is a raven like a writing desk” is generally considered to be: “Poe wrote on both”, which is witty at least, if not laugh out loud funny.
codechicago277··on LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises

codechicago277··on Replit AI deletes entire database during code freeze, then lies about it
The fault lies entirely with the human operator for not understanding the risks of tying a model directly to the prod database, there’s no excuse for this, especially without backups.

To immediately turn around and try to bully the LLM the same way you would bully a human shows what kind of character this person has too. Of course the LLM is going to agree with you and accept blame, they’re literally trained to do that.

codechicago277··on How Tesla is proving doubters right on why its robotaxi service cannot scale
“On Monday, Musk thought it would be funny to expand the area covered by its three-week-old Austin robotaxi service to resemble a giant penis when seen on a map.

“Harder, better, faster, stronger,” the $1 trillion company wrote on Monday, a double entendre referencing the synth pop track of the same name by Daft Punk, a duo appropriately known for performing as robots. Musk approvingly reposted the phallus-shaped service map, adding the fare would now be hiked to $6.90 per ride from $4.20 previously, both numbers the 54-year old often employs for comical effect.”

It’s amazing that anyone still takes him seriously. One of the first riders almost hit a train, and this is what he’s spending his time on. It’s inexcusable, but his fans lap it up.

codechicago277··on AI Is Like a Crappy Consultant
This is true. Just like a crappy consultant, AI lets you offload the repetitive, monotonous work so that you can focus your time on the big architectural problems. Of course you can write a better function if you spend a lot of time on it, but there’s magic in just letting the AI write the off the shelf version and move on.
codechicago277··on Tesla Solar Sales Declined for 4 Qtrs. Then Tesla Stopped Publishing the Numbers
SolarCity was about to go bankrupt (owned by Elon Musk’s cousins), so he found a way to justify bailing them out with Tesla money. He held the famous solar roof event, saying that all the homes behind him had solar roofs cheaper than a normal roof, which was later proven a lie. Tesla’s entire solar business was built on that foundation, and they struggled to justify it in the long term.

codechicago277··on Ask HN: Promoted, but Career Path Derailed
I’ve seen the “go-to” person get trapped in a local maximum, because even though they get opportunities, they are held to a higher standard. It’s a recipe for burnout if you don’t know what you’re doing, and can keep you from building deep expertise, since you’re constantly bouncing from fire to fire.
codechicago277··on Hoppscotch: Open source alternative to Postman / Insomnia
Yeah I started using the GUI version, there’s a standalone app or the in browser one. I don’t know why all of these web request clients have been trying to sell enterprise features instead of just giving you a gui to make a quick request.

codechicago277··on Notes on Argentina
That’s oversimplifying a complex issue, some of his policies will work and some will fail, and that fact says nothing about underlying ideologies that drive his behavior.
codechicago277··on First Look: Loops, by Pixelfed – Decentralised TikTok Competitor (2024)
Conservatives love their echo chambers too. This is more of a modern cultural phenomenon than a political divide. The conservatives in my circle react strongly to any idea they don’t agree with and don’t want to see it, while the liberals tend to spread ideas they hate for rage baiting.

The way our social networks optimize for engagement is the root cause, since boring balanced content doesn’t create advertising revenue.

codechicago277··on Hacker infects 18,000 "script kiddies" with fake malware builder
I hope you realize what a god complex you had at the time thinking you had the right to harm others just because they were doing the same. This code of ethics is the source of hate in the world. I guarantee these people didn’t learn their lesson but instead started doing the same thing to others even less powerful than themself.
codechicago277··on TikTok goes dark in the US

codechicago277··on Louisiana Requires Ten Commandments to Be Displayed in Public-School Classrooms
On a legal basis I’m not sure, but on a theological basis many people find it very important to separate patriotism and allegiance to a particular government from theological beliefs, which is why many saw Trump’s Bible as heretical.

It’s also worth pointing out that rejecting state influence over religion is the original reason for the concept of separation of church and state, at least in America. It was was far from the norm at the time.
