code_witch_sam··on A design system for the federal government
i'm not sure i would call this a "big government initiative." this is pretty cheap, obvious stuff.

you might pull an off-the-shelf component library for a demo app or even a startup, but the value of building in-house/from-scratch in government, especially military, cannot be understated. the web ui ecosystem is rife with security risks and accessibility footguns.

it looks fine to me. it's a design system, not rocket science.

code_witch_sam··on To make dishwashers great again? (2020)
Did the euro brands like Bosch and Miele ever do a bad job? From what I've read, they've been consistently good over the decades.
code_witch_sam··on To make dishwashers great again? (2020)
My Miele is absolutely perfect. Quiet, convenient, and very, very effective. Stylish, too.
code_witch_sam··on Tremor – The React library to build dashboards fast
i only skimmed the home page, but it seems far too opinionated for general use. if you're starting fresh and plan to use tremor as your all-encompassing ui kit, it seems fine. but at that point, why not grafana, retool, or some other no-to-low-code dashboard solution?
code_witch_sam··on Blade-Runner-Tailwind: A Collection of Blade Runner Themed Tailwind Components
seems good for low-interactivity sites, especially if everyone is generally looking at the same content. i'd consider it for my company's front-of-site, sales sites, blogs, that sort of thing. i certainly wouldn't write discord, vscode, or even a simple no-code tool with it.
code_witch_sam··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
the fact that the latest 100 gecs album has a spatial master was a big tell for me. spatial is definitely going to stick

even just their boiler room set in spatial sounded more realistic than any other live thing i've ever listened to. hearing the crowd around you is surreal

code_witch_sam··on Falcon 40B LLM (which beats Llama) now Apache 2.0
analog chips like what MythicAI is developing seem like the next obvious leap forward for deploying inferences broadly. ASIC/FPGA wouldn't be much different than a GPU. ASIC seems like a brittle solution

code_witch_sam··on Beej's Guide to Network Programming
learned sockets with this like 20 years ago programming IRC fserve bots in C
code_witch_sam··on Ask HN: What's your favorite software testing framework and why?
my favorite is the one that is most ergonomic for the tools i'm building with
code_witch_sam··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Not to mention access to chips. That's becoming more and more difficult for uncooperative states like China and Russia.
code_witch_sam··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
>Is military capable AI in the hands of few militaries safer than in the hands of many?

Yes. It is. I'm sure hostile, authoritarian states that are willing to wage war with the world like Russia and North Korea will eventually get their hands on military-grade AI. But the free world should always strive to be two steps ahead.

Even having ubiquitous semi-automatic rifles is a huge problem in America. I'm sure Cliven Bundy or Patriot Front would do everything they can to close the gap with intelligent/autonomous weapons, or even just autonomous bots hacking America's infrastructure. If everything is freely available, what would be stopping them?

code_witch_sam··on US Supreme Court Justices get lavish gifts; Raise bar for bribery prosecutions
the supreme court has a history of "going rogue" when the legislature is divided and weak. ezra klein did a good podcast on this a few months ago
code_witch_sam··on McDonald's temporarily shuts its U.S. offices and prepares layoff notices
i absolutely loved McD's spicy crispy chicken sandwich. is spicy mccrispy something different? it was quite a bit spicier than i expected (which is why i loved it probably)
code_witch_sam··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
i see it going two ways: 1. they do skeumorphic design in a way where comes out as a giant touchscreen with a bunch of static buttons like you see with physical interfaces on a car 2. very deep menus. e.g., a dozen taps to switch from radio to bluetooth

in either case, it'll have a 15hz frame rate and 800ms of lag between input and response. i expect nothing better.

meanwhile, if we had a full-on apple car, it would probably have a 120hz truemotion display, well-calibrated spatial audio, and a fully-utilized M2 Max chip

i was bearish on the idea of an apple car years ago, but now with tesla withering, i'm practically begging for it

code_witch_sam··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
paralegals seem like they're very much at risk
code_witch_sam··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
why not have a system to write the tests as well?
code_witch_sam··on How to smooth and spread A* paths for an RTS
best i can tell, dragoons in starcraft 1 used A- paths. that is, A*, but completely f-ing random
code_witch_sam··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Apple bring continuity to the Music app?
i opened the music app on my watch, clicked the airplay icon, and i see all of my home devices (homepod, apple tvs) listed. even my mac mini is listed.
code_witch_sam··on The Twitter Files
what if you use the report button to do the same, and succeed? have you influenced the election? perhaps marginally. your tweets do the same.
code_witch_sam··on The Twitter Files
what does a particular politician have to do with this? the "leak" literally said both the trump white house and the biden campaign lobbied to have posts removed

i think it's kind of funny that the government is lobbying corporation now, rather than the other way around.

code_witch_sam··on The Twitter Files
to many, the information isn't as important as the narrative
code_witch_sam··on The Twitter Files
i also have a direct line to twitter to get posts removed. it's called the report button. i wouldn't be surprised if many individual twitter superusers have removed more content than the white house
code_witch_sam··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
i don't really worry about it myself much. i just err on the side of not installing things i'm unsure about

but my boomer mother? whewwwwwwwwww if someone told her she had to install a 3rd party app store to see pictures of her friend's birthday cake or some terrible grape salad recipe, she'd do it. and she'd give them all of her personal info too.

sadly this is the norm, not the exception

code_witch_sam··on Lenis – Get smooth or die trying
the 90s web was extremely semantic in that the entire site was laid out as a table. tabular data is easily consumable!
code_witch_sam··on Austrian ISPs Block Cloudflare IP addresses after apparent court order
kiwifarms needs to go away, yesterday. but this seems unrelated. piracy is a much bigger deal to these folks than doxxing, organized harassment, swatting, etc
code_witch_sam··on Show HN: A Visual IDE for React
or winforms and C#!

tbf, building a ui with an absolutely-positioned, pixel-bound presentation engine was AWFUL without a designer. anyone work with Win32 APIs back in the day? 60 lines of code just to open a window without even drawing anything on it!

building a ui in code is a lot easier with flow layout and a good component library

code_witch_sam··on Apple Mac Studio
- [x] RGB'd out PC with RTX 3090 for playing Minecraft and Elden ring

- [x] Decent wired network in-home

- [x] Connect via Moonlight from Mac Mini M1 to Gaming PC

- [x] Best of both worlds

It's wonderful. I only wish my Mac Mini had a 120hz display attached.
