- Indians in India do enjoy(or say Worship) Cricket, but out of a population of 1+ Billion ONLY 11 Indians make it to the International team and that's where all the money is (or atleast used to be since India started IPL since last year)
- In the US, the population is way less and you have multiple sport avenues (Football, Basketball, Baseball, + many more) with multiple teams. So the success factor in pursuing a sports dream is more practical. And even if you don't reach the top, you can still find a descent job with a BS degree, assuming you completed. On the contrary, in India you are pretty much doomed if you put all your energies into sports and it does not pan out your way. The Ratio of the Number of Educated Population to the Number of Jobs is very high.
The top scientists from BARC, ISRO are very well known are literally treated like national heroes. And so are the 11 cricketers from the Indian National Team. Most people don't know the name of Hockey Players(apparently our National Game), ... at the most only 1 person per sport (other sports) might be known by people.

I noted another point from the article.
Craig Barret is very right when he says American Kids run after Interest and Indian's go more after the money. It's the same population and competition issue. If India had a 'normal' population, I am pretty sure many would have pursued their interest rather than the Success Formula ...
Engineering (preferred IIT) + MBA (from IIM) = Nice Paying Job
PS: In HS = You NEED to have Physics, Maths, Science to be eligible for Engineering School. This is the same as Freshman level material we do in colleges out here.
Too be honest I think if you(most Indians) end up doing an MBA right after Engineering without any work experience, what is the whole point of slogging through Highschool to get into the Top Engineering Colleges to only end up being into Business School. And Yes, similarly applying to Grad School in US is another way to chase that dream and then apply for PhD. On the contrary my american friends in Undergrad here ONLY pursued a masters/phd if they had a genuine interest in it.
Now with a lot of Immigrants coming, it's indirectly creating the same problem we have in India. Too many educated people, so more competition for the number of jobs and hence people born here might also have to someday stop focusing on their dreams(sports, music, etc whatever it be) and live in a cut throat environment making sure they have a job, which is really sad.
(The Buffalo based is definitely not easy to comprehend in the first go)
EDIT:
Why am I being downmodded ? I thought we are supposed to have open discussions here. (I did find the actual google mkt share in the TC blog later, but I was presenting an alternative reason along with the fact that their site was attacked)
- Python [You can write quick programs on the command line or use it as a calculator]
- ToDo List/Notes App running on the background.
- Multiple Desktop Windows(workspaces)
- Dual Monitors.
I can see people paying 1 USD to earn 100 Virtual Coins, but they should be made aware that it's a 1 way route. I also think having offers/surveys for users is OK to earn Virtual currency, but as long as it's made clear enough to them that they are getting themselves into a recurring charge of $10.99/mo.
I see all these setbacks of yours as stepping stones to success, plus you are only 18. In other words you are learning thing's earlier. Keep trying and soon you will be rewarded.
I have been going to a lot of meetups in the Social Space (Facebook, Myspace, Web Startup's etc) as my side projects/interests lie in the same area. In the process of these meetup's I have learnt a lot and seen a couple of good demos. So, I started to blog about those events or the demos that I see there for everyone else's. After any meetup, I typically have a descent number of topics to write about.
The primary reason for me to start a blog was to get better in writing skills and convert the thought process to text that fellow reader can comprehend. I am not really looking to make any money via blogging at least in the near future.
Another theme I have seen is that a couple of people write on funny incidents that happened to them during the day or weekend. It could be a funny/embarrassing incident, but they do a great job of expressing it that even strangers will find it amusing to read it.
Edit: In the process I also opened a twitter account (@socialapp) to see if I would be able to promote my blog. It's been a descent passive experiment as well =)
I think work age is slightly different in Asia. Most people do not work till they have at least a BS Degree (21/22) or possibly even a Masters degree. And also, while they are in school/college they pretty much stay at home in the comforts of their family unless they go for an engineering college to a different city. So, indirectly they are pretty much protected from the real world issues for a major part of their youth. So, age/maturity also seems to have some cultural flavor to it as well.
There is another company in the same space called PayyAttention.
So, its definitely giving high priority if you both are tagged in the same picture irrespective of the fact if you are really good friends with them or not. One of the friend tagged in a pic with me was added about 4-5 months ago, whereas my other friend I have know her since 2001, but on facebook since 2004/2005. 70% of my friends added are from the 2004 - 2007 time period.
The other day I was talking to my friend and she was telling me that facebook suck's because it does not support layout changes and allows auto music play as soon as you load the page. So, in the process I told her about the layoffs and Facebook has crossed over Myspace in terms of monthly visits... she was totally surprised.
ipod touch = no camera(very sure), gps (I think it does noot have it)
Typically it consists of 3 or 4 demos of products(pretty much Web based applications). I saw Evernote, FluidApp, Retrevo to name a few in these meetups. It's then followed by Networking where you can look for fellow founders or even hire developers etc etc ...
i) Real Dollars. (you get the money)
ii) Doing Offers. (The Offering company pays you)
Many VC's think it's a proven model for at least Social Networking Applications. (See Offerpal Media, Peanut Labs)
I will be heading there tomorrow, so I will update you guys how it went.
However changing jobs does slow down your Green Card process as some of the paper work has to be redone when you join a new company.
However, I think I need to make it clear to him that I am taking a personal expense on the server cost as of now and into the future till if/ we make any money or just leave it behind as a fun project that we both collaborated on it. I think 60/40 sounds fair and reasonable. [I would love to hear other people's opinion on it]
A few questions further into it:
1. Say we do it 60:40 (informally say over email records), what happens if he works on for a while and ...
a. does a good job and then decided to not continue for X reasons.
b. does not get anything done for X reasons and decides to move out of it.
2. This is a pure fun project on the Social Networking platforms. So, it may or may not work like N other applications. Is this the right time to talk about it and how to bring this revenue sharing idea into the discussion without loosing the other parties interest? But sometimes when the immigrants(like me) have lived a major part of his youth life in a different culture and adjusted there with the society, people, etc, they tend to feel associated with the new country. (I think it all depends on the age you came to the country)
I think the US immigration system needs a new and improved modern look. I would not deny the fact that certain companies/people do exploit the H1-B Visa due to loopholes in it. This definitely brings a bad name to entire group and also puts into question the validity of the H1-B program and I am totally with my American Citizen's on that, but in certain situation they do need foreign talent. The H1-B program needs a fine tuning.
i. It hampers my capability to jump jobs to risky startups, because if that startup goes bust, I need to find a job in 2 months to stay in the country. Especially with a recessionary season, it adds to the risk while your existing employer is pretty strong.
ii. I am always looking for avenues to work on Ideas, and I do that too. But, because I need to be employed to maintain my Visa Status, I can only devote my evenings and weekends.
iii. I am also worried about the Laws (Immigration and other) that may prevent me from having my own venture etc.
I have been in the US for close to 10 years(8 years now and 2 years when I was a Kid). So, I have lived most of my decision making, understanding the world, ups/downs of life here in the US and I feel really connected to this country and really love it. I even pay good amount of Tax dollars plus work for a US company that works towards the growth of the US economy even in this downturn. But my fate still lies on the Immigration Policy.
Another point I wanted to mention was about my experience in College. In my freshman year I realized hanging out with kids that went to Highschool here that being Smart in school equates to being a Geek, which is not considered Hip and Cool. On the contrary back home in India where I grew up, being smart(not necessarily Geek) was considered Cool and everyone wants to be friends with the Smart Kid. Luckily, it worked out good for me as I had a solid academic background from India and then had cool friends out here.
- if they are going, what's in their agenda ?
- if not, what would they like the products/projects come out of this ?
ps: I am going, will probably try to build something over FB platform or something that use's Twitter.
