codeTired··on Ask HN: Those who were broke and lost in life in 20s. How'd you find way again?
This question is for me!

In my late 20s I started having many weird symptoms and essentially was unable to continue my physical job. I was on food stamps.

I always thought I wasn’t very smart, but I just gave up too easily. Without any other options education was my only option. I graduated with high honors with a CS degree.

Met a VP in school he offered me an internship and I have been working for him for a few years now.

I ended up finding that programming is really my passion.

I’m planning to go back for my masters as my workload is pretty low.

When I think back I remember how I was losing hope. I grew up poor so I had no parents to really fall back on. I’m glad I pushed through. Now, I’m on vacation enjoying the sun.

codeTired··on Just 23% of Americans Know the US Has Failed to Pass an Internet-Era Privacy Law
This might be more realistic statistic among programmers, no way it applies to all Americans.
codeTired··on Ten killed in private jet crash – Wagner leader Prigozhin 'on passenger list'
If you are going to make a move at a dictator you are either successful or you die.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who is familiar with the situation.

In Russia murdering officials, enemies and people who do not fall in line is quite common.

codeTired··on How I Exposed the Biggest Pharma Scandal of Our Lifetime
I had the pleasure of going to a pain clinic. It was filled with patients and filled with young attractive sales reps. Even back then in my 20s I felt uneasy. I then entered the office described that I was having pain for a few months, no more than 3 minutes later I was given a few days supply of cymbalta and a prescription for said drug. 0 warnings about possible side effects and felt like my medical needs were not addressed at all.

This was after they were cracking down on opiates so cymbalta became the next big thing. Now, there are issues coming about those drugs too. I don’t think it’s as bad as opiates though.

I have learned that many doctors just plainly don’t care. I have some in my family and they don’t see an issue with getting free shit from sales reps.

codeTired··on My job search story
The CV looks just awful. I wouldn’t want to work with someone who showed me such a resume. Absolute buzzword spaghetti. The colors and the graphics just scream I peaked in high school.

From my experience people with such resume are low performers with focus on marketing themselves.

For anyone not familiar, Golden Gate Bridge is a pretty common spot for committing suicide especially for people under 40.
codeTired··on A protein that disrupts cells’ energy centers may be a culprit in CFS/ME
I believe it has been found that the new h1 inhibitors like Allegra can inhibit TNF-a, so it could technically work on several inflammatory diseases.

This is what some biologics do.

I have spoke to people who had improvement after doing an antihistamine protocol. In the long covid/cfs space.

codeTired··on A protein that disrupts cells’ energy centers may be a culprit in CFS/ME
It took some 20 years for this to become an accepted truth.

I remember learning about a physician who helped his sister with child birth and she died. He was aware of the washing hands but ignored it. I believe he ended up committing suicide as he wasn’t able to cope with basically killing his sister due to his ignorance.

So they can spend money on treatment and waste their time obviously. /s
codeTired··on Significant slice of the U.S. workforce believes their jobs have no purpose
In reality when you really think long and hard many jobs are kind of useless.

I could argue that in the grand scheme of things our existence might be completely useless and irrelevant. Yet we spend our short existence doing things which have almost no meaning, some of us try to impress our friends and neighbors. Put up some accomplishments on our useless CV before we turn into dust. Others will raise their offspring to continue this until our planet can no longer sustain life.

Humans are weird man.

That is such a good read.
codeTired··on Writing about what you learn pushes you to understand topics better
I have this odd fear that sharing what I learned today will make me look stupid.

“Look it’s 2023 this dude just learned about http error codes”. Silly example but you get the idea.

Start creating a paper trail. Research local laws. Our town has ordinance in place that prevent such behavior even during day time.

Email mayor, chief of police and start talking to neighbors. At some point you might be able to sue the owners, sue city/policy if they are not taking action to enforce rules(if they exist).

Call cops whenever rules are broken and document.

The stock market has predicted recessions? What do you mean by this?
codeTired··on Being a short-term rental host has become much harder
From what I am reading here my experience is the norm these days.
codeTired··on Don't Enjoy Coding
This is an odd take.

You should enjoy programming as you will be miserable otherwise. You don’t have to enjoy all parts of the job, that is life.

Overthinking stuff on paper can slow you down too. Some times it’s a good idea.

AirBnB is the worst thing to happen to the housing market and towns need to outright ban it or allow specific areas for short term housing. Generally short term housing causes headache for the neighbors.

People who often do short stays don’t give a crap about noise, neighbors, or anything else.

Plus many got into airbnb to get rich. Have 0 business sense, 0 landlord experience and often don’t maintain the property.

Plus, every time I stayed at Airbnb I felt scammed. The pictures always lied. Some of the things were not as advertised. And before leaving I had a todo list. Absolutely pathetic way to spend vacations.

codeTired··on Childhood antibiotics as a risk factor for Crohn's disease: Cohort study
Have you tried going on anti-histamine regimen?

I actually have spoken with a guy who got extremely sick after flouroquinolones and after taking antihistamines for a few weeks he went completely back to normal.

Your tryptase could be a sign of mcas. I would definitely explore if it seems like you are getting an allergic reactions to foods and things.

Would you mind sharing how you were diagnosed?

I know that aortic aneurysms is a common side effect.

There is variety of supplements one can take.

There is a physician in Germany Dr. Stefan Piper who published a book on it. He goes over possible therapies. Tendonitis usually gets manageable. Neurological symptoms are the ones that are more difficult to treat.

Some people report success with high dose thiamine, but high dose thiamine has been helpful in fibro and small fiber neuropathy along with alpha lipoic acid. Anti depressants can be also used to manage symptoms.

Some people reported resolution with pirenzepine. There is a drug company putting pirenzepine in a cream to treat nerve damage. That is currently in trials. I think the company is called WinSanTor.

My condition has improved but I still cycle. I’m taking antioxidants and other supplements that support mitochondria.

There is a sticky thread on reddit r/floxies, that discuss some of the supplements used and reasoning behind them.

codeTired··on Childhood antibiotics as a risk factor for Crohn's disease: Cohort study
There is definitely a mix of issues. Some patients expect antibiotics because they paid for the visit.

However, every physician should be able to present patient with different options and risks. It simply is not happening. Some antibiotics carry smaller risks than flouroquinolones as this drug belongs to topoisomare II inhibitors along with chemo drugs. Some reactions we are seeing are much like damage from chemo. However, the action of damage is still very poorly understood. There is some research on mitochondrial dna damage and adducts.

There recently has been talk if flouroquinolone antibiotics could be a potential cancer treatment even.

If I knew I would never touch this antibiotic unless on my death bed.

codeTired··on Childhood antibiotics as a risk factor for Crohn's disease: Cohort study
The healthcare needs to be completely overhauled. So many doctors are completely ignorant of risks of antibiotics and other meds.

There was a study that found 7% of doctors reported adverse reactions. Some were scared, some didn’t know how, some didn’t have time. Some doctors made no reports in nearly lifetime of practice.

When I was 16-22 I had multiple 6+ months courses of doxycycline for acne. I have seen multiple dermatologist who said nothing can be done about my cystic acne. At some point I was tired of doxy making me feel awful so I researched different skin types and skin care routines. As long as I use a mild soap twice a day, use a moisturizer and don’t touch my skin I get 0 cystic acne but it took weeks to see the results. No doctor ever told me about different types of skin and I was young and dumb. My parents didn’t know any better. And internet wasn’t as popular back then.

Then, I got an adverse reaction to cipro. And 40+ doctors ignored it. Told me it’s all in my head. Told me to seek help for my mental health and depression. Later FDA added warning about permanent nerve damage. I still have to send studies to doctors because they try to tell me I’m wrong, after I had every test under the sun to rule out other causes.

I help admin flouroquinolone toxicity group and every day we get individuals who were given these last resort meds for suspected infection. It is border line medical malpractice. However, I have seen that it is impossible to find a lawyer to take the case and find a physician willing to testify.

There needs to be a better system for tracking allergic reactions and trends. For example, cipro might show no reaction up to 6 months. Then, you snap your Achilles. The doctor won’t tell you it was cipro unless you tell him. It’s fucked and extremely underreported.
