cobbzilla··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
It’s hard to overthrow actual free markets. Small business is too sympathetic.

But if you pass enough well-meaning regulations and strangle all the small businesses with good intentions, it’s much easier to overthrow a crony-capitalist oligopoly of megacorps, which is exactly the end game.

cobbzilla··on Executable Is a SQLite Database
This is really creative and clever, nicely done!

The “Inception” graphic was hilarious and made me wonder if perhaps the site itself is served by some SELF binary (is it?? that would be insane)

> the world of Internet advertising just doesn't run like that at this point

It has always worked this way:

1. if you can sell the ads yourself, you get better rates and better, relevant advertisers.

2. if you can’t sell ads yourself, you use ad networks and send your audience the worst of the internet.

All the major pubs do this. It’s impressive that a smaller outlet does it.

> The last time we attributed liability to non-human things was the deodand of the Middle Ages.

I can think of a couple of counter examples:

Civil asset forfeiture: your property is charged with the crime, you have to petition the government to get it back or else they sell it at auction.

Similar: When products deemed unsafe are ordered to be destroyed; it’s the same end effect as the deodand although liability sits with the manufacturer.

cobbzilla··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
iirc they had a light bulb named TEST. like, I want a real bulb not a test one.
cobbzilla··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
I dunno, trust is a good foundation, and then you need some good ole fashioned checks and balances, required transparency & record-keeping.

I sense that the checks-and-balances & record-keeping around mass-force-push SMS in the US are now extremely stringent especially after the Hawaii incident. And I'm OK with the current situation here.

OTOH, the checks-and-balances/transparency situation around LPR camera networks is... basically non-existent. I am not OK with the current situation here.

Both of these situations in the same (relatively) high-trust US. The difference is one has some serious regulations around it, and the other is cowboying shit.

cobbzilla··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
Sending thoughts of hope.

I am reminded of what Fred Rogers would say in times like these.

Fred Rogers often told this story about when he was a boy and would see scary things on the news: "My mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world."
cobbzilla··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
No you were not lied to. and thank you for heeding the good advice to not be a jerk.

Whether you see it or not, the vast majority of people /are/ generally good, and more importantly they want to be around other people who value being good, not being a jerk.

Folks who are all about money and power hang in different circles; I can’t speak to their happiness levels, but regular folks steer clear of them and warn others when they get burned.

Stay on the good team. There’s plenty of us and we welcome you. What can I do to help?

cobbzilla··on The Amazon tax
I wonder if people who live in DC think the same about their federal tax dollars, it’s roughly the same flavor of “local”
cobbzilla··on Shattered skeleton is first confirmed death from trebuchet
But have they identified the trebuchet that killed him?

We can rule out Warwolf [1] my favorite trebuchet, which never killed anyone.

Oil CEOs are well intentioned. A different kind of well, but, oh well.
cobbzilla··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
I wrote some JavaScript and paste it in my console to automate this when I left Google Photos. The “data avarice” is astounding.
cobbzilla··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
As someone similarly frustrated by these UI shenanigans, I’m impressed with how well thought-through your idea is. It sounds reasonable! Probably not that hard to implement either. Could it be a mere vibe-coding session away from existence?
cobbzilla··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
Devil's advocate, the worst-case scenario is really bad, and would probably be common: A random button your pointer is unintentionally hovering on stays put while the rest of the page wildly formats around it, super-janky UX.
cobbzilla··on Grok 4.6
Maybe local means internal? My agent can’t list files on attached USB drives, and it can only read files on the drive (by full path) after asking me for permission.
cobbzilla··on People who grew up with high economic connectedness earn more
In other news: People who grew up locked away neglected by their parents earn less

But first, we must talk about the wetness of water

Sorry but what is this even trying to say? 1=1 ?

cobbzilla··on Go is an ideal language for AI-assisted software engineering
Is the correctness of its implementation of the algorithm unaffected by bugs in this state machine? Maybe I missed something.
cobbzilla··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Sure the school board parents are politicians too, they care about kids, no disagreement.

If you’d stop straw-manning me for a moment you might notice you still misunderstand my point.

cobbzilla··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
> You can't imagine someone genuinely caring for a child that isn't there own?

I just said the opposite. I can imagine many people genuinely caring for a child that isn’t their own.

I am skeptical when a politician who does not know my children claims to care about them.

To borrow an LLMism: It’s not cynicism, it’s the reality of history. We the people have been duped many times over. Caveat Emptor.

cobbzilla··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Yes it’s normal to worry about your kids. It’s normal for family and friends to worry about your kids.

When a politician is worried about your kids, you should be worried about your rights and freedoms. Not only for your own sake but for your kids too!

cobbzilla··on The Valley of Webhooks
The proposed “feed” solution is functionally indistinguishable from incremental reconciliation.

The article presents a good framing and is well-written, but doesn’t really propose anything new.

cobbzilla··on What's the largest software project AI can complete on its own?
whatever it is, it will be heavily skewed in favor of whatever there is a lot of examples of. AI could bolt together many cookie-cutter pieces into a very large YOLO system.

The trouble comes when you now want that system to do something unique for your business, and those ripple effects through the entire system you didn’t design become very painful.

cobbzilla··on A California aquifer may have crossed the point of no return
California has codified a water caste system. In 2015 (my last experience with this), citizens were ordered to cut water use 25% while ~400 pre-1914 claimants with magical "senior water rights" took 90% of the water. [1][2]

We conserved, rates still rose, f*ck the poor the most, so that select farmers can use however much water they want. During a drought. As allowed and protected by law.

it’s a loose usage. necessary but not sufficient type of thing. if all your DNA instantly disintegrated, the process ends quickly, you are not you in many senses of the word. to preserve the artifact of DNA is to ensure (some of) the process continues uninterrupted; at least a few major failure modes of “the end of you” are mitigated. but gotta love me some Buddhist pedantry y’all can spar with the best

I use and prefer screen

I use tmux on windows and elsewhere when I must

They both have pluses and minuses, neither is perfect and both (yes even tmux) seem “old” in today’s world

There is definitely room for a next gen terminal multiplexer with all the built-in goodies we all want

cobbzilla··on How to survive boiling water
It is in fact how Deinococcus radiodurans works:

Deinococcus radiodurans has a unique quality in which it can repair both single- and double-stranded DNA. When damage is apparent to the cell, it brings the damaged DNA into a compartmental ring-like structure where the DNA is repaired, and then is able to fuse the nucleoids from the outside of the compartment with the damaged DNA.
cobbzilla··on How to survive boiling water
I want this mutation. You have little nano-crawlers going up and down your DNA strands fixing problems. It’s like ECC RAM for the essence of YOU. And you’re basically immune to cancer.
